...make even two-headed calves trancendental. heart
"The Two-Headed Calf" Tomorrow when the farm boys find this freak of nature they will wrap his body in newspaper and carry him to the museum.
But tonight he is alive and in the north field with his mother. It is a perfect summer evening: the moon rising over the orchard, the wind in the grass. And as he stares into the sky, there are twice as many stars as usual. -- Laura Gilpin
What other purposes does poetry have?

Well I like art and poetry for its freedom allowing people to express themselves just for the sake of doing so. xd

In agreement with Moleje I'd like to add that one of the great things about poetry is it can be in any format and look like anything. Unlike short stories, or essays, there doesn't have to be any rhyme or reason to poetry, which allows complete freedom of expression. Even if i don't have the words in my vocabulary to express how the situation I'm describing makes me feel disjointed and confused, I can express that by formatting my poem in a disjointing and confused way, thus conveying my feelings to anyone reading my work.

Poetry is to convey emotion, plain and simple. It's to set free the constrained writer who doesn't feel like prose is flexible enough.

AndreasDarilk Poetry is to convey emotion, plain and simple. It's to set free the constrained writer who doesn't feel like prose is flexible enough. Yet another great thing about poetry...Poetic prose is a much welcomed form of poetry, so even if you like (or even need) the inflexibility of prose, that's allowed too. "Dude, I don't wanna sound like a queer or nothin', but I think poetry is kickass!!"

AndreasDarilk But...being queer is fun. Come to the dark side. We have lube and dildos. Oh my lord XD
Like stated before, Poetry is about expressing emotions, often emotions caused by a current life situation. Such as, Edgar Allen Poe [Love him! <3] has much dark poetry, but if you research in on Poe's life, it was rather dark also. One thing to note, He worshiped women. They were his life, His own personal goddesses, and it's said that every woman he had ever loved had died or succumb to Tuberculosis... The same disease that had taken his beloved mother when he was but a child.
Death = Dark thoughts. Poe's writings = Dark thoughts put on paper Death must therefore equal Dark thoughts put on paper
That's my nifty little equation. xD
