Halfway through playing tonight, I suddenly started getting the Ace of Spades more and more frequently. Then we switched games to spit in the ocean and it seemed to end up in my hand every round. And every time I got that card I won. Once in a great while it would show up in my room mates hand and givehim a really great hand, like a full house, but in those hands I would always just beat him. It was so strange that I looked up ace of spades on the net and this is what I found.
In Robert Louis Stevenson's story "The Suicide Club" (187 cool , the Ace of Spades functions as the "sign of death" within a secret society whose members commit "suicide" by submitting to be killed, if they draw the Ace of Spades from a pack of 52 cards during a club meeting, by another member drawing the Ace of Clubs.
The night Cliff Burton of the band Metallica died, he and Kirk Hammet drew cards to see who slept where. Cliff picked the Ace of Spades, won and chose Hammet's bed and ended up flying through the window when the tour bus hit black ice.
More recently, in 2003 a deck of Most-wanted Iraqi playing cards issued to U.S. soldiers during Operation Iraqi Freedom; each card had the picture of a wanted Iraqi official on it. Saddam Hussein got the nickname "Ace of Spades" as his was the face which adorned that card. As we all know, he was executed just days ago.
The dead man's hand is a two-pair hand, namely "aces and eights." The origin of the name, legend has it, is the five-card-draw hand held by Wild Bill Hickok at the time of his murder, which is accepted to have included the aces and eights of both of the black suits.
This all comes at a strange time for me. I have long since thought I was going to die at the age of twenty-seven, and that is my current age and will remain so for nearly six more months.
Also, I have a shirt from Fender on its way to me that was ordered last week. I looked at the picture again and noticed that the skeleton in the picture has an ace of spades in the band of his hat. And, late last week I also contacted an artist friend about doing a piece of art for this guild featuring the dead man's hand, which of course includes the Ace of spades.
