How many wrestlers have have been lucky enough to star in film for the cinema? Very few indeed! How many of them have had leading roles. Even less. And how many have had their name in the title? It's difficult to find. One of the jewels in the crown of the NWE has been given this fantastic opportunity : the mysterious and deathly Vampiro.
A film titled? Vampiro: Warrior of the Night? Directed by Josè Nieto Ramirez was released in Mexican cinemas in 1993. Vampiro made his appearance in the leading role.of this strictly Spanish language film which had only been distributed within the borders of its native Mexico. It is a ninety minute movie packed with sciencefiction, horror and a definate thriller. Vampiro stars alongside other fellow wrestlers on the Mexican scene such as the unforgettable "Beetlejuice" Art Barr who died shortly after the release of the film. The plot is very simple, Vampiro plays the part of a wrestler who is
kidnapped by some characters of evil but in the end manages to escape. The first scene is set in a crowded wrestling arena where Vampiro is fighting in the main event. The baddie of the plot makes Vampiro faint in the middle of the ring by means of a voodoo ritual and is taken away on a stretcher but before he can be taken to hospital he is kidnapped by the bad guys. A strange creature then arrives on the scene to help our dark hero. It's a cross between a rat a monkey and a woman with superpowers who uses some wrestling moves to save our hero. Vampiro is tied to a bed and tries desperately to free himself. When he finally frees himself, he attacks his prisoners and with the help of his friends finally manages to beat the bad guys in a triumphant
final combat scene. This cinema experience may not be his last and in fact the NWE has recently launched a project to try to insert its wrestling stars in the world of TV and cinema. First it was Kishi who appeared in the ticket office success "Christmas in Miami" then Matt Morgan who will soon be seen in the film "Piper" and "Hercules" over the next few months. Who knows, maybe the next wrestling star to appear in another film will be Vampiro. We will keep you informed.
