.::The Japanese Phrase of the Week::.
...Or something like that. Every week (or maybe every other week ninja ) a new Japanese phrase will be posted here for everyone to admire. 3nodding Most of the phrases will probably be pretty random... and some of them might actually be useful to know! Really, it's hard to say.... sweatdrop Anyway, if you know a useful and/or interesting phrase that you think would make a good phrase of the week, just tell me about it and I'll see if I agree! Anyway, here is an ever-so-handy mini pronunciation guide! a = aah
i = ee
u = ooh
e = eh
o = ohOnce you've got those down, the rest of it isn't too hard. However, there are some other things to remember: When you see SU, the "ooh" is often silent. For example, the word tasukeru. The common pronunciation is "tahs-keh-roo", not "tah-SOO-keh-roo". This also applies to the word often seen at the end of most sentences, desu. It is most often pronounced "DESS" rather than "deh-SOO". It is still acceptable to say "deh-soo", but it is considered to be a more feminine way of speaking. sweatdrop ...That's all for now, but if I think of some more things to remember, I'll add them later. 3nodding

December 24, 2006: Week #1
The phrase I have chosen for this week isn't very Christmas-y... well, OK, it's not Christmas-y at ALL. However, it is one of my favorite Japanese phrases..... for some odd reason. ninja
Ahem. The phrase is as follows:
Uragirimono nan da yo
ooh-rah-gee-ree-moh-noh nahn dah yoh
This phrase comes from the Japanese version of the CG movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and it basically means "You're a traitor." sweatdrop ...Like I said, not very Christmas-y....
As you may have guessed from the translation, it's Kadaj who says this line (in the scene where he points his sword at Cloud with all the poor brain-washed kids surrounding them). Though, actually, Sephiroth says a very, very similar line later in the movie.... I think it was uragirimono ne , which means the same thing, just with a few very minor differences in grammer. 3nodding
Yeah, don't ask me how many times I watched that movie in Japanese... 'cause, to be honest, I don't really know. sweatdrop

EDIT: I realized shortly after I posted this that Sephiroth actually says his traitor line in Last Order. (He says it to Zack while they're in the reactor.) 3nodding Yup. Sorry for the mix-up!

January 2nd, 2007: Week #2
It's a new week (and a new year!) and it's time for a new Japanese phrase!
This week's phrase is quite a bit simpler than last week's, and would probably be a lot more useful in a real conversation...
Ohayou gozaimasu
o-hah-yoh go-zah-ee-mah-soo
Ohio goes I mass eek question
This means "Good morning!"
If you want to cheat, after someone else says "ohayou gozaimasu", you can reply by saying just "Ohayou". 3nodding

January 10th, 2006: Week #3
I keep forgetting to update this on the right day!
Anyway, this week's phrase is a suggestion from Yufa:
Kore wa, watashi no meishi desu
koh-reh wah wah-tah-shee noh may-shee deh-soo
Despite it's length, this is actually one of the first phrases that we learned in the beginners Japanese class that I was in a couple years ago. The phrase means "This is my business card."
Now.... this phrase has never been all that useful to me, personally.... however, it does have a basic sentence structure that is common in Japanese, and if you become familar with it, then... well... um, I'm just rambling now.
"Kore" means "this," "watashi" means "I," and "meishi" is "business card."
"No" doesn't have an exact English equivalent, but saying "watashi no" is pretty much the same as saying "my". Basically, it shows ownership. 3nodding

Hmmm.... well, I don't remember learning the grammar of "tabetakatta", but yeah, that has something to do with eating an apple.
The second phrase......I have no idea whatsoever. O_o
And the third phrase... is like "Excuse me," or "I'm sorry for intruding / taking up your time." Something like that. 3nodding

And Seshiri... to answer your question... well....
I've been studying Japanese for the past three and a half years or so. Two of those years, I attended a Japanese class at the local high school, and the rest of it I've spent teaching myself from books, and from watching anime in Japanese....
And yufa grew up watching anime, and she took three years of the Japanese class at the high school... and she went to Japan for about two weeks last summer....
So, if you wanted to get to our level... uh... I'd have to recommend taking a Japanese class, 'cause it helps a LOT. 3nodding
But if that's not possible.... then read lots of books such as, "Japanese for Dummies", get yourself a Japanese-to-English, English-to-Japanese dictionary... watch lots of anime in Japanese with the English subtitles, and try to pick out words and phrases that you hear a lot.
That stuff'll get you started, anyway. But taking a class is really the easiest way to start learning the language, both how to speak it and read it. 3nodding

January 20th :: Week 4
Well, it's the end of week 4, and I'm finally updating! xd
Anyway, this time I'm gonna do something different.
I'll give you two different words that happen to look/sound a lot alike:
Kawaii and Kowai
kah-wah-eee and koh-wah-ee
The first word means "cute" and the second means "scary". Pretty different, huh? xd Unless you happen to be playing a scary video game, in which case, if you see something cute, start running the other way, NOW! burning_eyes The scariest thing in a creepy video game is always something that would otherwise be cute. At least, that's the case in Silent Hill 4, anyway.... stare I think that pink bunny has scarred me for life.... sweatdrop
Anyway, that's it for this update. Hopefully I'll come up with something more interesting for next week. 3nodding
