I've heard from many, many people on the Final Fantasy Subforum that The Newer Final Fantasies just don't match up to the older ones. Many of these people would say that the older Final Fantasies have a "feeling" That the newer ones don't have. Apparently, this "Feeling" was lost with Final Fantasy VII.

I haven't been playing Final Fantasy as long as most Final Fantasy fans, so I have not played these original Final Fantasies. I have purchased Remakes of the older ones, so that I could get closer to the full Final Fantasy experiance.
I have the remakes of Final Fantasies 1 through 4.

I think I have felt this feeling. The older ones have a certain charm to them that the newer ones don't have. The older ones seem a lot more relaxed, and not as rushed. In addition, the overworld maps seem to amplify this feeling as well. They gave feeling of adventuring, which is somthing I have yet to feel in many 3D games.

Discuss:
What Seperates older FF games from newer FF games?
Do you feel this feeling with the older FF games? If so, than what creates this feeling? Is the feeling a good thing? Do you think the Newer games lack this feeling?

I'm no expert, since I haven't played the older ones (I desperately want to) but I DO know that VII started the cyber punk genre. I LOVE the cyberpunk genre.

It probably feels more rushed just because of the technological feel of speed, BUT I have to disagree... VII takes it's time. The first... what... 10 missions take place in the same town? Grungy Midgar. (which I think made me appreciate the rest of the world more) VIII is maybe a bit rushed. Especially with the money system (if you aren't jumping into the next mission, you're demoted, and get paid less)

The feeling you're probably taking about is the magical sort of feel you get from the fantasy genre in general. Knights and Princesses and the like have a certain charm about them. It could also be due to the coloring, since you mentioned the maps. From what I've seen of the older stuff, there were generally brighter colors, which might make it seem more bubbly, but a lot of that was lost with VII.

I think the two sets of games certainly set a different feel, but I don't call that a bad thing. The early ones are charming, and the newer ones are... well... badass, for lack of a better term. It all depends on what the player prefers. I like the charming air of the Ye Olde type tales and everything, but I personally think I prefer the newer "cyberpunk" games. They're kind of like... the old fantasy worlds, after a couple thousand years of technological advances...

That sounds right.

I had a mad Final Fantasy III DS addiction yesterday. While I was watching the introduction, I thought to myself:

"Wow... This game is the epitome of purity... This was made before cliche's were cliche', but even so, this game creates a great, unusual gameplay experiance. There are no angsty heroes, big breasted woman, or annoying perky theives. No "badass" villains or any overused cliche's ('cept maybe the whole "light warrior" thing). Just pure, lovely, fantasy."

Yes I've fallen in love with Final Fantasy III, and I think this is why.
I have to admit, I have not played Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX, and I have only listened to and watched my friend play Final Fantasy VII.
I'll admit to my ignorance. But, with Final Fantasy VII, I didn't sense this purity at all. I really didn't sense anything. It was just one thing after another. I did sense emotions from Final Fantasy X, but I didn't get the same sense of purity.
I know that the whole "Cyberpunk" thing may be a factor, I surly felt that it "dragged down" (If that is the correct term) VII, but I didn't feel it drag down X.

I still want opinions. Let's hear em'.

That's a good way to put it. I've played FF 1-4 on emulaters (and paid a friend to tell me what it said, as it was untranslated.
I think VII still had some of the 'feel'.

The first video game I ever played was the first Final Fantasy on the Original Nintendo. And yes the older games do have a charm that the newer ones do seem to lack. Although 9 regains some of that classic charm. I suggest to all new Final Fantasy fans to play the older games. You wont regret it.
