This is going to be the first post which'll outline what I want/need. Things that should be covered What is Trance History of Trance How it is produced Types of Trance (Progressive, Epic, Melodic, etc. etc. etc.) Notable Artists Trance in everyday life (commercials, BT produced some of N'Sync's songs, movies, etc.) Versatility of Trance (Trancey breaks, Progressive Trance/House, Trance Step) - THIS ONE WOULD BE PURELY OPTIONAL/LEFT FOR THE VERY END
Note: This is no particular order, jsut a basic outline. When we compile it, I think the best method would be to go What is Trance, How it is Produced, Types of Trance, History, Notable artists, then the "Trance in everyday life." Will the goa and psy trance people have a burning desire to split it from regular trance, or are you guys kosher in keeping it in a general larger trance thread. If so, should we just make a seperate Progressive thread? wink
What would be cool, is if when people contribute to this they could head it say in this style What is Trance? Replace what is Trance with "Notable Artists" etc. etc. for what you want to contribute. p.s. Maybe with the Notable artists we can break it down by what type of sub-genre they do?

What is Trance?
First and foremost, Trance is a type of Electronic Music. It is centered around a 4/4 tempo, 124bpm (beats per minute) to 148bpm usually. Through the use of euphoric and energetic synthesized sounds backed by a pumping beat, massive hooks, off-the-beat basslines, the mix of major and minor chords in squence, and often long breakdowns which build slowly to create tension and exptency which inturn cause an "epic" and "uplifting" feel to the track. However not all trance tracks are highly energized, some are rather cool, relaxed, and laid back.

Wait, wait, wait. Are we talking "trance" trance, or "eurotrance" trance? You know, just to get it straight before Linen and co. vomit all over this thread.

Ah. 'Cause the way your previous post was written, it sounded like it was trying to say that all trance was like that, which, as many, many people here will be more than willing to point out, is not correct.

Layra-chan Ah. 'Cause the way your previous post was written, it sounded like it was trying to say that all trance was like that, which, as many, many people here will be more than willing to point out, is not correct. True true, but I think as a generalization it is correct. It can always be discussed in subgenres which I think would probably fall under "What is Trance" biggrin

I was just thinking that say, psy trance is usually not "epic" or "uplifting" and has for the most part abandoned the chromatic scale so the terms "major" and "minor" don't really apply. Similarly with the hard dance grouping.

Similarly with the hard dance grouping. Well yeah, as I stated I'm just doing an umbrella of trance and then I can break it down. I do think that psytrance (from what I've heard) still has the same system of breakdowns and such. I don't know about bandoning the chromatic scale since in a way, every note is contained on the chromitc scale iirc, otherwise it would be just noise with no melody. p.s. Wanna help me write it too? biggrin I want some help sad

Each note appears on a scale in the set of scales that are considered chromatic, but that doesn't mean that the entire set of notes in a piece fall into a single chromatic scale. Note that "major" and "minor" don't apply to individual notes, but to sets of notes and chords. As most electronic music doesn't use chords anymore, the terms "major" and "minor" must then be applied to notes. But a lot of psy uses all twelve semitones, not limiting itself to a diatonic scale, and/or uses a pentatonic scale. Actually, there's quite a bit of electronic music that deviates from the standard well-tempered note system altogether, grabbing frequencies that don't appear in the standard note system.
I don't know anything about trance other than the fact that it exists and that I can't stand eurotrance. I'd agree that there are breakdowns in psy, though, and some hard trance does use anthems. I'm just not sure that these should be considered defining features of trance, because these do not apply to all of trance, and because these appear outside of trance.
Actually, to tell you the truth I don't really like the use of "trance" to denote euro-, psy-, and hard trance, as I feel that the genres are distinct enough that trying to group them is misleading.

Mmm, true though, but at the same point they all stemmed from the same source and all share defining features (use of hypnotic like melodies). Not everybody can note between psy, hard, and trance (since not all of 'euro' trance is produced in Europe razz ). Most people know it as "Trance," and remember, this is just a 101 - introductory. Hehe we can always make Trance 201 - Hard Trance, Trance 202 - Trance, and Trance 203 - Psy Trance biggrin (or just in "What is Trance" break it down between Trance, Hard and Psy if people so wish).
