Origins: The Elfin creator god is a trickster named Sankla (sometimes called Sanctus Dolosus in Patrian accounts), who created the first Elfs, a man and a woman, from the soft, pliable moss that grows on the legendary Sky Tree. The Elfs were first made as a present to Sankla's wife Sama (perhaps derived from the same figure as the Humans' Somna), as servants to entertain her in her palace in the clouds. Sankla was a master craftsman, and Sama was an impeccable musician, and the Elfs learned their skills from them.

When Sama grew gravely ill, Sankla tried every possible cure in the known universe, but without success. To aid him, he sent the Elfs down to Somnium to search for a cure there. The Elfs learned to cultivate all kinds of medicinal plants, but found nothing that would restore Sama's health. Eventually, Sama died. Stricken with grief, Sankla forgot to call the Elfs back to the sky. The Elfs of Somnium believe that there is still a small population of Elfs living in the sky, consoling the forlorn Sankla.

The Elfin mythology does not deal with the creation of Somnium itself nor the other races. The Elfs are not concerned with the origins of things that came before them. As a culture, they are at peace with the fact that there are some things out there that they personally cannot explain.

Allies and Enemies:

Humans- The Humans and the Elfs have a long-standing, but uneasy partnership with each other. The Humans respect and revere Elfin knowledge and craftmanship, but feel that they are foolish for not adopting the Human philosophy of imperialism and capitalism. The Elfs give credit to the Humans' ingenuity and military might, but look upon them with sadness, feeling that their disregard of the natural world will be their downfall. Elfin craftsmen are one of the most financially secure demographics in all of Somnium, for Human aristocrats would pay any price for their works.

Neither race is dependant on the other for its well-being, and if the two ever dropped their alliance and went to war against each other, the result may well be mutual assured destruction.

Faerys- The Elfs and the Faerys have a strong alliance, to the point where Faerys will openly reside in Elfin homes as official guests. Although the Elfs do not understand all the secrets that the Faerys keep, they know the most out of all the other races. The Faerys consider themselves to be dominant in their relationship with the Elfs, and will often make this known. The Elfs show Faerys total respect.

Nagas- The Elfs do not have very many dealings with the Nagas. Instead, Human merchants act as a medium between the two races. However, the Elfs have been watching Patria carefully, suspecting that the Humans may begin taking advantage of the Nagas and their lands. If such a situation were to arise, the Elfs would quickly come to the Nagas defense.

Po-Kai- The Elfs admire the Po-Kai and their ability to resist Patrian colonialism. The two races rarely interact, but are currently at peace with each other. The Po-Kai consider the Elfs to be much nicer and less dangerous than the Humans and will often express this sentiment to members of either race.

Ghoblings- The Ghoblings are the only race towards which the Elfs hold any genuine ill will. They believe that the Ghoblings are an evil, even demonic race. Hobghoblings are perhaps even worse, having all the faults of regular Ghoblings, with all the faults of the Humans tacked on. Elfs rarely set foot on the island of Maliga. In those rare encounters between Ghoblings and Elfs, the Ghoblings seem to react with even more malice and savagery than they do towards the rest of the races. It is currently unknown why the two races are constantly at odds.

Unica- The Elfs have, on occasion, stumbled into Solitudo Valley, not always on purpose. The Unica know of their existence, but treat them as if they were simply funny-looking Humans. The Unica often have pointed ears and have been told that they are Humans, so they assume that the same applies to the Elfs. The Elfs consider the Unica to be a separate race from the Humans, and are more approving of the low-tech, tribal Unica way of life than urban Patrian culture.
