Alrighty, I think eventually somebody would have created this thread, so I'm just going to go ahead and do so. xd
So far, there are four [professional] authors who I happen to love: Al Sarrantonio (his diction in his ToyBox anthology is just...wow), James Joyce (he IS the master of diction!), Charles Dickens (ornate language, though some of his stories are kind of unbelievable), and Kouhei Kadono (author of the Boogiepop series).
Joyce and Dickens both placed an emphasis on diction, though I personally feel that Joyce triumphed over Dickens. There are so many connotations in Joyce's novels, messages such as breaking away from the chains that weigh on you so you can finally spread your wings and fly far far away from the oppressive world that you are so familiar with, and etc. Dickens, on the other hand, wrote eloquently, but his stories are kind of superficial.
Al Sarrantonio and Kouhei Kadono are both contemporary writers. Sarrantonio writes such enigmatic stories. His stories are also heavy in imagery. Kadono-sensei's Boogiepop series is very philosophical, and that I like. His stories are also closest to mine in terms of style.
Yeah, sorry for my rambling, but I just couldn't help expressing how awesome these authors are. xp
Anyways, feel free to discuss/share your favorite authors in this thread.

Breaking already from the intellectual theme, I'd have to say my favourite author is Terry Pratchett.
He's an english fantasy author that created his own complete world and I love the way he's made everything compare to the real world. Like he has his own versions of Europe, Asia and taken all the stereotypes and turned them all on their heads.
My favourite book by him is Lords and Ladies- I love the whole idea of the book, and I find the way he turns everything around fascinating XD Such as, usually, everyone perceives elves to be so pure and good, but in Lords and Ladies, they're evil, ruthless beings, whereas the witches are the good guys, while they're usually seen as evil.
I just think he's a great author. He's written so much stuff and he's still going. If you haven't read Terry Pratchett's work- Do It XD

I dislike most literature like Dickens, or, the intellectual stuff, save for a select few authors.
I really like Gregory Maguire (author of "Wicked") and Jim Grimsley (author of "Kirith Kirin"). Gregory Maguire made fan fiction a legitimate form of writing, at least I felt. And his ways of telling stories, and developing characters is brilliant. Jim Grimsley is a gay literature author, and his stuff is just beautifully written. So sad, and yet you love the characters. It is beautiful. <3
On authors that are more...intellectual levels, I like Nella Larson (author of "Passing"), she's a Harlem Renaissance author, and her use of words and characterization is great. "Passing" had an interesting ending. I also like Walt Whitman and TS Eliot's poetry. And then Thoreau, I just found what he wrote fascinating.

My favorite authors would have to be George R. R. Martin (the most epic fantasy novelist of our time), Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (he might not like Sherlock Holmes, but I do...) and Frances Hodgson Burnett (they shaped my youth!).

My favorite author is also Gregory Maguire at the moment, I love Wicked and Son of a Witch, when ever I’m in a bad mood I can open either of them to a random chapter and just read :3
At the moment I’m trying to broaden my book collection (getting out of the teen novels), so I’ll probably check out some of the authors posted here ^^

My favourite author is J.K. Rowling followed up by Diana Wynne Jones and Brian Jacques. And although I like J.K. I am not an obsessive fan, I merely like her books because they are written well and such. I like a lot of authors but those are my favourites, I'd say.

@Lacey Grey - omg, Terry Pratchett is amazing. I have only read half of Good Omens, and I am already in love with him and Neil Gaiman.
@Nall-chan - GRRM wins at high fantasy. I like A Song of Ice and Fire quite a bit more than Lord of the Rings, if only because it is so much more complex. I think I need to read some of his other stuff, too.

Though the first of his that I've read was actually Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister... I happen to like that one best, but both of the Wicked books are good. I would love to see the play, but I'm afraid it wouldn't live up to the novel. I also happen to LOVE Piers Anthony - any of the books in the Xanth series. I've yet to find anyone, other than my uncle, step-father and me, who have read his books.

Wikipedia has just informed me that Maguire has announce the third book in the Wicked series to be The Cowardly War, (source). Now I’m all excited xD @ dorkifiedchick – There are some small rumors going around that Wicked might be coming to my town within the next few years whee , I’ve read up on the way they’ve changed the story for the musical and I understand why they made those changes so I’ll probably just look at it as a whole other story other wise I'm sure I'd be disappointed. Now I'm just getting off topic rolleyes

But I didn't know there was going to be another one! I'm going to have to go see what I can find about it!

Lady Angelie @Nall-chan - GRRM wins at high fantasy. I like A Song of Ice and Fire quite a bit more than Lord of the Rings, if only because it is so much more complex. I think I need to read some of his other stuff, too. A Song of Ice and Fire blows me away. I haven't been able to read A Feast for Crows, though, because my boyfriend keeps forcing me to read unbearably lame novels. I can't force myself to read them, but I feel guilty if I read something else. So I've been avoiding reading in general. crying I read that he did some stuff for Dragon magazine, but I don't know where I'd get a hold of it. (My dad collected Dragon a loooong time ago, so I do have the old ones heart )
