Donner:
'It's looking to be a hard winter ahead. The ground is already covered in snow that often times reaches to your knees. The wind sends ice accross the land, pelting you and the others in the frozen rain, clinging to your coats and stinging at your eyes. There's no food to be seen, only white in every direction. The youngest of the herd, Rudolph, is growing too tired to hardly move through the snow after the herd. The others for the moment seem fine though you know they're growing more weary. You've always cared for the others in this herd, they look to you as the leader and it's not the time to let them down...'

Blitzen:
'The herd has stopped to rest in a thin cluster of trees, there's no shelter around for miles. Snow has been lashing through the wind endlessly for nearly two days and the herd is tired and hungry. You wake in the night to the sound of a faint snarl. You can't make out anything through the blinding white, but you can smell a single wolf nearby. Very likely a lone wolf, just as desperate for survival as the small herd is, desperate or mad enough to test his luck with a lone hunt. The others havn't stirred in their sleep...the beast is watching you.'

Blitzen

'How long will this last...' Blitzen thought wearily as her eyes drifted up to the looming stormy skies above, the chilling wind nipping at her flesh as it flowed through her fur. The temperatures had fallen to a degree from the wind that it created ice to form in small chunks on her stormy hued pelt and large antlers. Slowly lowering her head to look on at the exhausted herd....it didn't seem like they were strong enough to continue further without attempting to rejuivinate their spirits and bodies. The situation didn't help much that their only salvation from the merciless blizzard was a thin cluster of trees in a vast stretch of snow covered plains. The feeling of hope was bleak, yet one look at her sibling Donner would make something out of nothing everytime. He was the leader in their eyes, the unstoppable force of determination and courage to which kept their lives in order. She was proud to be his sister, as he was her closest companion due to their similarities in personality as well. Trudging through the snow, the femme made sure that all were accounted for as she took shelter with the rest of the herd before closing her eyes to grant her own tired body some sleep.

The light sleeper she was, an echoed voice carried in the howling winds as Blitzen opened her immediately narrowed eyes. Lifting her head to gaze to the herd, which was fine, before turning to glare out to the wall of white before her...her fur tingled. The scent of a wolf reached her nostrils as quietly Blitzen rose to her hooves as the herd remained undisturbed in their slumbers. Moving forewards a few steps into the storm, her brows furrowed deeper to keep the snow out of her golden orbs as she was faced with a wall of darkened white. Like Donner, she cared much for the safety of the herd, feeling a bond with their close knit group that to be with them was as important as breathing in sweet air. It was unwise to venture off into the blizzarding night alone to fend off a creature which could easily have a pack nearby...yet unable to pick up the scent of other predators, her noble mannorisms reigned in her mind. With that in mind, Blitzen stalked out into the storm in search of the wolf.

Like her brother, she had the courage to face up to almost any creature of the forest...yet she was not he, for in the face of the unknown her fears crept on her like shadows in the night. For Blitzen, her worst fear which left the strong femme trembling like a child was being alone, isolated. Memories of her brother coming to her side whenever the whispers of solitude haunted her mind, it was he who taught her a trick to ease her troubles. Singing. Although being the built and almost masculin female she was with her large antlers...she had the voice of the wind, strong yet held such a feminin tone it was as if it was not her own. Lowering her head to the ground as she walked, her lungs rose and fell as she tried to sniff out the wolf, catching faint sounds of crunching snow between the howls of wind. As the frightened trembles began to rattle her bones, she began to sing the song which blessed the wind through her childhood. "So stand in the rain, stand your ground. Stand up when its all crashing down. Stand through the pain, you won't drown...and one day what's lost will be found. You stand in the rain..."

Snapping her head back, Blitzen came face to face with the wolf as its mane was raised, snarling determinedly in her face. Taking defensive position, she stamped her forehooves on the snow, bellowing out at the wolf with an agressive tone. Frowning, the wolf took a snap at her muzzle as she retorted by dipping her head and thrusting her antlers at the wolf to get some distance between them. Just as she was about to charge, the wolf blinked, pausing as he looked like a deer in the headlights before turning tail and retreating. Raising a brow in suprise, Blitzen turned to see an almost ominous figure in the blizzard....yet she knew better. "I heard your singing..." Donner emerged from the darkness into her visibility range, smiling lightly. Blitzen chuckled meekly, weary from the night intrustion. "You always have, brother. Lets go get some rest...we have a long day tomorrow and you need to be strong for everyone." With a nod from the Stag, the pair walked back to the herd's resting spot quietly, much too tired to converse. The herd was an odd one to say the least, her brother becoming the leader by accident in a sense for his personality, burdened by the troubles of the entire pack. Yet, Blitzen knew he didn't mind as he cared for everyone with such a tremendous love in his heart. She had become the mother in a sense, strong and courageous, unlike some of the more prettier, feminin and kind females in the herd. Yet...looking up at Donner, then to the small herd resting under the thin cluster of trees; she wouldn't change it for the world.

Blitzen.
~Come wolves, or darkness itself, I will protect the ones I love.~

---The response---

The eerie call laid its icy claws upon the cow’s ears and mind, thick from dream’s fog, like a banshee’s cry. Eyes flicked open instantly, but the whirling snow that danced around her acted like an impenetrable veil and did not allow her eyes, and their vision, passage into the surrounding area. A tingle ran the length of her spine, and it wasn’t due to the mounds of ice that had decided to cling to her thick coat.

It came again, that horrible wail that made one’s heart race with a mix of adrenalin and fear. Blitzen could feel her own heart clattering against her ribs, sending miniscule pulsations through the thick white that surrounded her body. She knew what made that haunting sound, and even though she dare never show it, it frightened her to the bone. However, it wasn’t her own life that she feared for. No, it was the lives of the company that surrounded her. Their lives were forever ten times greater then her own, or at least she believed so…and her brother believed the same as well.

A soft crunch to her right, and the gentle pinging of bells, alerted the cow to her moving companion. Swiveling a winter-crusted ear in the correct direction, she awaited calmly for a word.

“What’s out there? I heard it, but only from the edges of my dream…” His voice came in a gruff whisper near her ear, but the cow’s eyes and attention remained focused ahead.

“A lone wolf. He cries with the same pain that I’m sure we currently feel. But even so, it holds another note… the kind that makes one wonder about its sanity.” Blitzen replied in her own husky whisper, shifting her body weight forward just enough to cause the snow to crunch under her weight.

“Mmm....”

The cow turned her head slightly as she watched the steam rise from her brother’s nostrils. She knew he was thinking the same thoughts. They were so much alike, her and he; both were brave, headstrong, and compassionate for those close to them. They were just as siblings should be.

“I’ll watch the other side of the herd, alert me if anything goes ill and I’ll see to-“ his words were cut off.

“-I will see to it.”

“But Blitzen-“ cut off again.

“-But nothing.”

Donner opened his maw to speak, but was immediately shushed.

The cow stared intently, like a deer in the headlights, into the swirling eddies of snow, her neck outstretched to its fullest extent. Large nostrils flared as frozen air was sucked deep into her senses and lungs. Without a word, she rose from her snowy bed, muscles twitching to relieve its furry covering of the cold ice.

In her own gentle jingle, she began to move, her footsteps silenced by the howling winds. All of the stern warnings and pleas from her brother, telling her to stop, where ignored, and soon the cow disappeared into the icy winds.

Alone now, Blitzen felt the full forces of the storm. It bit at her ears and nose and stung her eyes. Her senses were beginning to numb, but with every remembrance of the company she needed to protect from this wolf outrider, she’d feel a wash of warmth spread over her body. She wasn’t going to turn around now and let this banshee-wailing beast come any closer to the herd. No, she was going to find it, and stop it, right now.

It was while she was thinking those thoughts that said beast let out a small rippling cry, followed by a low and guttural snarl that seemed to come on the wind from every direction.

Blitzen snapped her head to attention and her eyes roved the mass of gray and white that enveloped her. She could smell the animal clearly now; it smelled of hunger and disease. Large plumes of steam rose around her head as she snorted, and in a warning, she stamped and pawed at the snow with a large, cloven hoof. She needed to get the animal closer, she needed to see it to be able to fight it…

The cow didn’t have to wait long, for the hunger and insanity driven wolf began to slink forward. At first, Blitzen caught sight of it as a mere shadow in the storm, but as it got closer, and closer, its gangly body became clearer, and clearer…

...It kept coming.

Again, a cloven hoof was smashed into the ice and snow, a warning snort escaping from her large nostrils. ‘There’s something wrong with this animal…’ Blitzen thought, for wolves, no matter how many, never continued to come this close to their prey when it was apparent that they’d been found out.

Stamping again, the cow squared her eyes at the animal. Her muzzle was pointed hellward, and her large antlers were brandished with a warning showing a true intent of using them.

The wolf stopped, mid-step.

‘I see I’ve gotten your attention,’
the large cow thought silently to herself, a smirk lighting her lips for a second.

Antlers almost parallel to the ground now, Blitzen snorted one last warning, and pawed the ground one last time, before she willed her body to move forward in a sturdy gallop towards the skinny beast.

The wolf, in complete shock of its prey’s bold actions, nearly doubled back over its own body and fled.

Blitzen almost chuckled at this, but instead gave a low trumpet as she thundered after him…but only for a few hundred feet. When she could no longer see, or sense, the retreating beast, she immediately stopped and raised her head, front pillars stiffening in the snow to keep her body’s momentum from pushing her over.

In a regal stance – head held high, chest out – the storm hued cow looked out into the dancing ice in the direction the stalker had gone. ‘One down…how many more there will be, I do not know, but I will be here to drive them off…’ She thought to herself.

She was a leader, a protector, and whether it was a wolf, or the darkness of the world itself, she would watch over and protect her company of loved ones and friends, and fight to the bitter end for their well-being.

Donner

There was something unfinished about the night, as if the artist had started to paint the picture but had long ago forgotten it in the corner of a basement, where it now lay gathering dust. The sky in particular seemed to be incomplete; instead of a luminous dark blue dotted with diamonds of stars or radiant sunset of colors and flames, the sky was…vacant. Nothing but a stretch of blank canvas, a long range of flat, gray clouds that reached from horizon to horizon, as if trying to cover the land below in a region of darkness. No stars shed their light through that thick mantle, and only the vaguest hints even suggested that the moon was out. The proverbial dust that now landed on this half-made portrait was snow, only instead of a fine sprinkling it was coming down heavily from the sky. Down below, the snow covered everything except for the footprints behind a small herd of reindeer, and those were filling fast.

If it continues like this, Donner thought to himself, there won’t even be a tomorrow… He shook himself slightly, dislodging ice and snow from his dark coat before looking back at his herd. It was a small herd, but it was all he had. No, it was more than just that; it was all he had ever wanted. It was his responsibility to ensure that there was a tomorrow, not for himself, but for his herd. He snorted harshly and made another push through the icy winds and snow, trying to make a path for the others. The snow came up to his knees, but he was a large reindeer; he would have no trouble. Or at least ‘no trouble’ compared to the struggles that the others were already facing.

On the bright side, trudging through the snow was a mindless task. It left the rest of his brain unused, which meant he had plenty of time to try and come up with a plan to save his herd. This wasn’t exactly bright though; on thinking about it, Donner decided that it was a rather grubby sort of thought, especially when he considered the complete lack of shelter. Snow, snow, everywhere, and not a single tree. In a strange way, it would have been preferable to face lera. Any sort of lera. At least he could do something to fight them. Even the toughest wolf tended to be turned into a few stringy bits of red stains after a few minutes with Donner. But the weather… he couldn’t do anything against that, and that made him angry and afraid for the fate of the herd.

A flash of gray lumbered to his side and he turned to look at his sister, Blitzen; with the icy air, her dark gray coat seemed closer to silver than anything else. There was no mistaking her antlers for any other cow’s, however. Her antlers were the terror of many wolves, and occasionally Donner himself.

“The others are getting tired, Donner,” she muttered softly. Or maybe she hadn’t muttered; the biting gale snatched at her syllables, as if jealous of her voice.

“I know,” Donner rumbled easily. Everyone was getting tired, including himself. Mindless though the task was, it required a lot of muscles. “But, look; there’s no shelter anywhere. We must keep going.”

“Going?!” Blitzen snorted, the breath in front of her nose instantly crystallizing on the freezing air. Stamping her hooves impatiently, she managed to get in front of her brother. The glare of her eyes was enough to stop a charging wolf, and made even Donner freeze like the proverbial deer in headlights. “Going where, Donner? There isn’t anywhere to go! We must turn back! I’m certain that I saw some sort of cave we could hold up in!”

Eyeing her antlers, Donner slowly blinked before shaking his head. “We cannot go back,” he rumbled patiently. “There isn’t anywhere to go back to. The wolves…” he paused here, knowing that right now, the icy cold and lack of food was a more certain killer than wolves.

A lone bellow from behind called Donner’s and Blitzen’s attention behind them once more as the youngest member of the herd struggled through the snow. For Donner, it was only knee deep, but for little Rudolph, it was even deeper.

“We cannot go back,” Donner said simply, voicing what Blitzen now knew. Once again, the buck looked around and shivered. It was not the cold that made him shiver though. It was simply the fear that he could lose his herd. Unable to go forward or go back, they had only one choice. They had to stay here and do their best. “We must stay and keep close for warmth,” he said. Or, rather, yelled. Once again, the wind was stealing away the noises, making everything outside of the biting wind almost silent.

Blitzen opened her mouth to argue, but saw the glint in her brother’s eyes and closed her mouth once more. This was not the time to argue with Donner, she decided. The pair tramped back to the rest of the herd, which was milling around anxiously, unsure of what was happening. Donner sidled up to Rudolph, trying to keep his little brother warm with his own body heat. He stamped at the snow with his hooves, making a tiny flurry of ice, desperately trying to find food. Not for himself, of course, although gnawing hunger bit at his stomach. It was for Rudolph, and if there was more, for the others. The herd always came first. Slowly, the huddle made its way towards shallower snow, hoping that some green shoots would have survived.

“We must stay together!” he said in his voice, which was used to command. Uncertainly, the other deer looked towards the unofficial second-in-command, Blitzen. The cow blinked her dark eyes several times and looked around before nodding.

“We must stay together,” she agreed. Following Donner’s orders, the deer moved together in a huddle, the older and stronger deer on the outside, with the youngest on the inside so they could benefit the most from the body heat. And there was Donner, standing on the outside, waiting for morning to come.

The herd would be safe. He would see to it. Any lera that planned to attack this herd of reindeer would find a bright-eyed young bull ready to fight to the death and beyond.

Blitzen

The snow was blinding, driven by the wind into her fur even as she did her best to brace herself against the brunt. She tried to use her antlers as a buffer to break up the onslaught of wind and snow, and while it helped very little, it did give her firm warning of what was watching her, the wolf's scent carried by the wind, only slightly deluded by the wet snow driven up her nostrils. It was strange - wolves rarely traveled alone, but even just one could bring unspeakable terror, and once Blitzen acquired its scent, she dared not lose it.

The soft crunch of snow underhoof was nearly lost in the roaring wind, but it awoke Donner regardless, and his head jerked upward to see Blitzen push herself up standing. Her sharp glance toward him silenced his question before he even opened his mouth to ask, and she covertly sniffed the air again. Her brother knew her well enough to follow her signal, and he too soon scented the awaiting wolf and snorted in contempt.

The snort awoke Rudolph who kept his head low out of the wind, instead rolling his eyes upward to stare wide-eyed at his siblings like a deer in the headlights. None uttered a word, but all were close enough to each other to not need words to communicate.

Keeping her stalker's scent at the forefront of her mind, Blitzen rolled her eyes downward to meet Donner's, gold eyes rimmed in silver narrowing in her silent statement, "Guard the others."

Donner snorted once more, his eyes meeting hers. "Don't be cocky - it's too dangerous."

To this, Blitzen's tilted her head to the side and gave her brother an admonishing look as if he was a youngling who had just done something very stupid or at the least exasperating.

Before Donner could try to stop her, Blitzen leapt over Rudolph's head who let out a choked bleat of surprise, and she dove into the battering wind even as Donner swore after her, but she knew he would not follow despite his concern. This was between her and her stalker.

Blitzen first ran away from the wind, letting it carry the wolf's scent to her to determine its position. Just to the left and back about three leaps - good. It was following her as well if her nose did not lie - even better. It was also alone as she hoped; if its pack or scouting party had been with it, she may have begun to worry.

These concerns answered, Blitzen made a wide turn to her right to head back into the wind. It drove snow into her vision, but she knew the same would be true for the wolf, and it would likely be slowed both by the wind and by the deep snow already blanketing the ground while her own long legs could drive her forward faster.

Lowering her head to break the wind with her antlers even just a little, she cast a quick glance ahead of her and leaped over a large lump in her way - a boulder rendered nearly invisible by white. The leap slowed her considerably, and she was already tiring, wishing for Comet's stamina or at the least Dasher's speed. Regardless, she knew a wolf's running stamina was nearly endless - she had to face it if she was to be rid of the stalker and assure the safety of her tiny herd.

Blitzen landed heavily on her front hooves and began to swing her body around even before her back hooves had touched the snow again. As she turned, she kept her head lowered until she was halfway around then swung upwards. The sudden weight against the side of her head as her antlers slammed into the wolf's side startled her, but she kept turning to throw it off of her. Its weight against her head made her left eye black out, but she kept turning, not wanting the beast touching her any longer than necessary lest it try to bite one of her antlers to secure a grip. A sickening, wet snap deafened her as well before the beast finally fell to the snow, and Blitzen worried at first that it had broken her jaw.

Blitzen stumbled back a step once the wolf was off of her, and she tried to shake vision back into her stunned eye, lowering her antlers once more in case the wolf righted itself faster than she could recover, but to her surprise, it remained grounded on its right side, back legs twitching faintly as blood bubbled at its fangs. Blitzen's brow furrowed as she surveyed the damage she had caused, rather surprised at her luck. She had not expected the wolf to be following that closely behind her, but thankfully she turned when she did.

The jarring her eye had suffered was minor compared to the broken ribs the wolf had sustained, and it also looked as if its back had broken when it hit the snow. It snarled at her as she stepped closer, no longer threatened by the dying beast.

"You thirsted for the blood of the wrong reindeer, unfortunate one," she said quietly even though she knew it could not understand her. Even if it could, her words were carried away swiftly by the deafening wind. The wolf snarled and snapped at her hoof in a desperate attempt for revenge before it was forever silenced by its former prey.

Blitzen trudged through the wind and snow back to her herd, her left eye squeezed shut to prevent further injury. She only needed one eye to see Donner and Rudolph both standing amongst their brethren to watch for her return.

Donner resisted the urge to call over the wind and instead waited until she was back within the circle, sniffing at her injured eye with concern which was coaxed away with the reassurance that she was just fine.

"But what about that blood?" Rudolph asked, worridly sniffing at Blitzen's left front hoof which trailed blood and things thicker through the snow.

"Worry not, my brother," Blitzen crooned to relax him. "It is the wolf's. He will stalk us no longer." At her insistance, Rudolph reluctantly settled back into the snow to sleep once more.

"That goes for you as well," Donner insisted, his gruff voice leaving no room for arguments. Blitzen let out an offended huff but let her tired legs fold into the snow beneath her, leaning the left side of her face into the cool white to soothe her still aching eye, and she let the thoughts of the wolf drift to the far reaches of her memory to never trouble her again.

Blitzen

The scent floated like streams of ribbon wafting weightlessly, gently through the violent winds. The way it woke the sleeping cow, however, would have caused one to assume she had been struck in the muzzle with a blow from antlers. Neck craning, her eyes slowly became alight with caution from having just been woken from a much needed sleep. Blitzen did not have to see it to know what it was... a predator. Not man… thank Hoern, it was not man. The female was rather tired of dealing with that particular species, although the vibrating growls of a lone wolf did not ease her in the slightest. Blazing eyes reduced to slits, trying to see thought the sheets of white that continued to batter against her tired body, concealing her dark hide and partially blending it with the contrasting white of her back.

Turning her head, intent on making some kind of communication with one of there fellow herd members, Blitzen was perplexed by the sight of her unmoving brethren covered by snow. She had expected others to be awakened by the appearance of a predator as she had been. Waiting for a moment, ears turned back, she listened carefully for any advances made from the predator. Still, none of her herd's members stirred in the cold. In one last attempt to wake them Blitzen snorted with a tone of urgency though her nose, nostrils vibrating as puffs of warmed breath shot from them making the icy air vibrate around her lips. She got movement, but it was not from any of the ones she expected. The mound settled next to her gave a jerk, the snow sliding off of a young bull to reveal fur nearly as white as the snow with a delicious cream color spreading over his shoulders and neck. His brown, travel-weary eyes opened with great effort from their owner, casting around until they rested upon the larger cow. Still half buried in snow, Blitzen lowered her antlered head, nudging his cheek with her goateed chin. Though it was not a complete goatee like her brother's, she was proud to have some extra fur to her jaw. Her voice was deeper then any of the other females in the herd, though there was a definite feminine tone edging the sounds of her words. "Come on… get up," she whispered gently.

Sled was one of the younger bulls in the herd, after Rudolf. He was nearly at the age to become an Outrider, though still had a long way to go before he would be ready to even challenge Rudolf. He was uncharacteristically gentle and petite for a bull, with fur softer than Vixen's and antlers smaller than Blitzen's.

The two were nearly always together and Blitzen did not hide the fact that she was fond of the bull. The others often teased her about her tag along, especially Cupid, who could not resist making comments once or twice about how she was "the only cow in reindeer history to have a male in her harem". Rather than disputing it, Blitzen went along and even went as far as to claim Sled into her own Harem, something several of the other Herd members where not to fond of. But one day when he was older and stronger, she would accept his invitation into his harem as his favored Cow.

The young bull blinked tiredly, feeling very content to just ignore Blitzen and go back to sleep. Though as his nostrils flared Blitzen saw his eyes widen with urgency, and he quickly got to his feet. Ears perked forward into the storm, casting his gaze around wildly for any sign of the wolf. Blitzen just started intently into the snowy shield the wolf had taken up.
"Sled, quit moving your neck" Blitzen ordered calmly, "That noise
will give away where you are."
No doubt those obnoxious man crafts that were put on each of their necks by their captor would have attracted the wolves attention. With the wolf this close already, Blitzen knew the collars could be their downfall. Considering this for a moment, a clever grin spread across her lips.
"On second thought" she muttered.
Sled furrowed his brow, pawing nervously, she could tell his eyes were
itching to look back and meet hers, but he didn't dare look away from the storm.
"Why… why don't we just wake up Donner, he would know what to do."
Blitzen frowned slightly and shifted her head to look back at the sleeping herd. She knew how tired all of them where, and especially her brother Donner, he had taken on the role of leader for the whole herd. Intent on guiding them safely, though he rarely got rest, he never complained.
"No" Blitzen said firmly voice taking on her more masculine feature. "No Donner's done enough, let him rest."
Parting the snow around her legs she sidled over to stand next to Sled
glaring into the snow.
"Its only one wolf… and its stalking, we'll be able to handle it."
"We? Just you and me? A wolf?" Sled squeaked, making it very apparent he was not very fond of this plan.
Blitzen shot him a glance sideways, eyes still narrowed against the wind, though the white pattern down her eye gave her the appearance of being angry.
Sled flattened his ears back ashamed of himself.
"Come on" she muttered ignoring the bull's posture "The wolf has gone quiet, we can't find it if it keeps on silently stalking." expression not changing she scanned the white wall around them again.
"How are we going to find it?" Sled asked softly, stepping closer to the larger cow, brushing against her shoulder with his. Neck close to hers, the familiar sound, of a soft jungle attracted the attention of one of her ears as it twisted down towards the bull.
"These man crafts on our neck" she said. Pausing a moment as she thought. Then shook her antlers proudly "ok Sled" she said finally, "I'm going to need you to go out there, and make as much noise with those things as you can." she explained, nudging the bells on his neck "I'll take up the storm in hiding and watch for the wolf to get closer as he stalks you."
Sled looked horrified "what? You want me to get the wolf to attack me?" he uttered, alarmed.
"It won't get that far." Blitzen reassured, "I've got good eyes. I'll be able to see it before it gets to close to you, I'm stronger then Donner so it won't be a problem to chase it off. And if we do this without waking up the Herd, then they can get some rest. It's not been an easy journey, we should not disturb them if we don't have to."
The explanation seemed to work a little on Sled, he got an apathetic look as the herd was mentioned. He knew morale was low, and that some sleep would help get the herd that he loved so much up and moving again, away from this storm.
Blitzen didn't have time to further convince him, it was faint, and she
could have very well been imagining it, her ears playing ticks on her from the constant howling of the winds. The snow beyond the wall crunched, as if something had tread on it, whatever it was, it woke Blitzen up to the danger that she had to deal with.
"Ok Sled, you go ahead," she said into his ear. "I'll be watching."
With that she left his side, walking as carefully as she could, taking
care not to make any noise with the man craft around her neck.
Not to far off from her, she could barely make out the form of the young bull, stopping his way unevenly though the storm, head bowed as if challenging it.
She walked along, not two long leaped away from her male, she kept pace with him, observing the aria around her very closely, she could not mess up this one. The jingling of the collar around Sled's neck reassured her that he was still up and moving. She knew that the moment she saw the wolf stalking him, it would be over, the only difficult part would be, spotting the wolf in the storm.

After a moment of nothing. Blitzen gave her face a break, turning it away from the lashing winds, and looked over at Sled, that looked as if he was doing a little jig. A chuckle rose from Blitzen's throat, no doubt he had picked that up from Dancer, She was always jingling the loudest out of all of them. He seemed to have eased down a bit, lifting his legs high over the piling snow bringing them down sharply, tossing his head around every which way.
Blitzen nearly forgot what she was doing, the moment she moved her head back to continue observing however. She saw a streak of gray and black bolting past her eyes. And parting the storm like a man's arrow though a Deer's heart.
It took Blitzen a moment to realize what was happening. But by the time her brain caught up, leaving her body paralyzed with indecisiveness. She watched, as the wolf leapt over the snow. The beast seemed to turn into nothing but fangs and claws, that in a matter of moments, attached
themselves to a horrified Sled's neck.
The Bull let out a bellow that ended in a strangled gag, snow being kicked up while he staggered back desperately. The starving wolf clasped its jaws around Sled's neck, and began jerking around violently.
Blitzen could not seem to move, she didn't quite understand what was going yet. Her mind would not let her catch up. Her heart was beating, very painfully against her chest. And at the moment, that was the only way she knew something bad was happening.
Within seconds Sled was on the ground, Blood pouring from the gaping wound torn from his neck, soaking the frozen ground underfoot, in think sticky life fluids, splattering his beautiful silky coat.
Sled did not move. Blitzen remained frozen.
The Wolf detached the flesh he had torn from the bull, and with out
hesitation, started tarring at the Bulls belly as it began its feast.
Unaware that the bulls large soon-to-be mate was standing with the storm… watching.
Things where still for a moment. The storm started to pick up as the shock slowly ebbed away. Realizing that she had not been breathing, She drew in a quick breath, unable to keep the shudder out of it. She took in another breath, and as oxygen returned to her brain, she began to act on what she should have done moments before.
"AAAHHH!" she roared furiously picking up her front legs furiously.
Though this only translated to the wolf as an enraged bay, it knew very well what it meant.
Spinning on the spot the wolf stared right up at Blitzen, wide round eyes fixed on the cows own mad golden eyes. Matted hair prickling along its slender back, pink tongue slipping out of its long muzzle to curl up over its bared teeth, and scrunched bloody maw. The picture of fear in any deer's eyes. With out hesitation Blitzen bellowed again, lowering her head, and charging forward to the wolf. Seeming torn, fighting with fleeing and leaving its kill behind, or staying
and trying to fight off an angry cow.
The malnutrition obviously slowed the predators thoughts, before it could make a decision; Blitzen had snatched the wolf up in her large antlers. Feeling her prongs piercing the beasts skin. The wolf began to scream, in both agony and fear. Carrying though with her movements she drove her head up, hurling the predator through the wind.
She didn't see where it landed. But she heard the dull 'thud' of a body
hitting the snow. Mouth open, she breathed hard though her mouth, ignoring the steam was poured from it as she continued to glare out in the direction the wolf was. The snow would die down at different moment, giving Blitzen a split seconds window of the wounded Wolf, struggling to push itself to its feet.
"Come back" she dared it under her breathe,
Once on its feet, the wolf stared back though the momentary clearness.
Neither of them moved, holding the same expression at they continued to
stare one another down. There mutual hate was disturbed however. At the sound of quick jingles and urgent hoof falls drawing closer behind her, most likely woken from the noise knowing that it was over, the wolf turned tail and fled. Blitzen however didn't move. She couldn't think… part of her wanted her herd family there… but another part, wanted them to never see this.
The forms of Comet and Dasher darted past her, to give chase to the
retreating wolf, making sure it was not going to come back.
"Blitzen!" she heard the voice of her brother call out, stopping when he was behind his sister. She could feel his gaze move from her, down to the ground, where the stiff body of Sled still lay.
His lips separated, and in a voice of disbelief, rising above the gasps and voices of the others.
"Blitzen. What happened?"
Biting down hard on her jaw she closed her eyes tightly, oh she wished he would not talk to her. She knew how much he cared for each and every one of the deer in the herd. He was hurt by this, she could tell from his voice, but not matter how much he expressed it, there was not possible way he could be hurting as much as she was.
She felt as is her heart had been flung away along with the wolf, leaving a bleeding gap, just like the one on Sled's neck.
"… I asked him to draw the wolf out." she said just loud enough for Donner to hear.
"you what?" he snapped, sounding startled.
She did not say anything, eyes refusing to open and see the truth laying in a bloody mess before it.
"You used… you used him as BAIT?" he continued.
"No!" she said forcefully, "I just needed to find it… I needed… I'm the
strongest here. I should have been able to handle it" she was lying to
herself, she knew very well that she had used him as bait.
Donner remained silent, allowing the storm to sweep away the mutters and soft sobs of the herd behind him.
"Blitzen… you should have woken me" he said, trying to sound caring, though not being able to hide his pain.
Comet and Dasher strode back stopping when they saw the expression on
everyone's face, looking mournfully down at Sled, but remaining silent.
"I'm stronger than you!" Blitzen burst out frustrated "I should have been able to handle a wolf!"
"Yes, Blitzen, you’re strong! But when it comes to tactical or moral
decisions, you don't think!"
Blitzen said nothing to this, but the stillness in her posture made it very clear that she was taking in every word her brother was saying.
Donner gave her a moment to soak it in, the absolute silence from the
others, becoming slightly unnerving.
He shook his head, narrowing his eyes, though sadly "That's why I am the leader! I'm the only one that should make these decisions so that others don't DIE!"
she could not take it.
"RAAHHH" she bellowed
Donner knew this was going to come even before he had said it. Preparing himself for the large females attack, and catching her antlers into him and she spun around and lunged head lowered in aggression. The two Reindeer struggled to get better footing, twisting their heads viscously, antlers clashing loudly with every movement.
The bells around their necks no longer sounded sweet. Rattling wildly,
adopting the urgent violence of the bearers, they sounded almost
frightening.
Pushing him back, she knew he was not going to try and fight her. He wanted to take up the defense. "IT WAS NOT SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN LIKE THIS" she screamed into his face, drawing her legs in closer together to give her more pushing power, momentarily destabilizing Donner,
Then in an instant spreading her legs for a more balance posture, rounding her shoulders she roughing jerks her head to the side and down, dragging Donner along with it and knocking him off his feet and in the snow. She stood tall over him, glaring painfully down at him, and hating that he was looking at her with such sympathetic eyes.
She avoided them, and looked up at the Herd, they all wore identical
expressions, as though they where deer caught in the headlights.
She exhaled a jet of mist from her nose, turning away from Donner and
strolling back to Sled's body to just staring down at him.
"There's nothing we can do anymore" she heard Comet tell Donner as the male got back to his feet. The large Male nodded giving Blitzen a moment of silence before saying "Blitzen… we need to leave now… there might be more predators around now that… now that the air smells of..." he trailed off.
Blitzen closed her eyes, disturbed to have heard that. But know it was true. "Yeah." she whispered her voice sounding feminine. Something Donner knew only to happen when she was sad.
"I know." she finished. Though did not move.
Donner turned to Comet and Dasher. "Let’s get the herd out of here" he
muttered to them. Turning to gaze at Blitzen's back, then walked to join the rest of the retreating herd.

Even in death… he was still beautiful, She though to herself, remaining
unmoved until the herd was out of sight. She lowered her head, letting her muzzle linger gently on his nose, gazing longingly into his sweet face. She gasped and closed her eyes.
"I'm sorry" she whispered to him, running her muzzle down his still soft cheek, without opening her eyes to look at him. She turned, head low, and vanished into the storm, to catch up with the rest of the herd.

For Blitzen <3

The night was colder than most the herd had been through, the wind had been relentless, and she felt bad for the calves that were shivering against their mothers for warmth. Blitzen couldn’t sleep from plaguing hunger pains, and the feel of being watched. She lightly swung her larger antlers, as if daring the darkness to come when she heard a snarl and turned her head towards the sound, it was a wolf alright, and by the smell of it, only one.

She snorted and turned to face him, she wasn’t going to be the typical deer in the headlights. “Time to put these things to use.” She muttered lowering her head and pawing the ground. She gave a ragged snort, her breath visible in the air, and a good shake of her antlers. Blitz was ready, but she could sense the wolf wasn’t drawing near.

A few powerful strides toward him and shortened their distance, all the time, moving her large antlers back in forth like a war trance. The large reindeer could see him now. He was a loner, skinny and desperate; a good scare would teach him to mess with her herd. With a bellowed, she charged at the wolf, which leapt at her. She lifted her head up to get him caught in her antlers, and gave him a good shake.

Tossing him to the side, he landed with a whimper. “You won’t be chewing on my herd tonight.” She seemed to growl, not like it could understand her, however he would understand this. Blitzen reared some and sent her hooves crashing near the wolves head, landing with a loud ‘fwump’ in the snow. The wolf scurried to his paws and seemed to run, knowing that it was his chance to leave with his life.

A group of males had stirred and came over to check what the matter was, one being of course her brother. “While you boy slept and dreamt of herms and other things, I was left to fight wolves." She said, making it plural to emphasize the fact that they were slacking.

“They’re gone, but you should be on you toes.” Blitzen snorted again and went over to her brother giving him a good night nuzzle; she’d be able to sleep now.
