Hardcore 101

Hardcore, House and Trance on crack.

It's a genre with a huge bi-polar disorder.
Ranging from it's full on hate of Gabber, Terrorcore, and Speedcore.
To it's blissful happy tunes of Happy Hardcore, Trancecore, and Freeform Hardcore (named for reasons unknown).

Things that make Hardcore 'hard' are BPM, use of Hoovers, and of course, the 4/4 Kick drum.

BPM
Typical beats per minute range from:
130 to 160 BPM for Belgium New Beat, Rave, and Oldskool Rave Hardcore.
160 to 165 BPM for Happy Hardcore, Trancecore, and Acidcore.
165 to 170 BPM for Nu Style Gabber and Happy Gabba.
170 to 200 BPM for Gabber, Breakcore and Digital Hardcore.
200 to 300 BPM for Terrorcore and Metalcore.
160+ BPM for Noisecore and 300+ BPM for Speedcore.

Kick Drum
Kick drum are interesting, because in Gabber and it's offspring, the kick is overdriven much the same way a guitar is in Hard Rock. Though, occasionally you may hear it in other genres too. This is important because by adding distortion, you fuse both a Bass and Kick Drum, creating a 'Bass Drum.' Doing so allows for the higher speeds and kick-bursts with out it sounding like a young child had a tantrum with some Bass. As a result, it's extremely rare to hear a Bass Guitar in Gabber and the darker Hardcore genres.

Hoovers
Hoovers are an interesting instrument. To put it shortly: it's a Saw-Toothe wave which a Low Frequency Oscillation (LFO). To decribe it, it sounds kinda like a Race car zooming by. Or a vacuum with a higher pitch. Hoovers are the instrument of Hardcore. Starting all the way back in the begining with Belgium New Beat and Rave, Hoovers became 'the synth' of Hardcore.

~Happy Hardcore (I get the easy one! blaugh )

Happy Hardcore, it can be cheesy, but at times is fun to listen to if you really want something uplifting.

    Traits of Happy Hardcore include:
  • Overly happy, uplifting lyrics.
  • 'Chipmunk' lyrics.
  • The over misuse of gated-saws.
  • The over misuse of the note pattern E to D to C to D.
  • BPM are usually around 150 to 160. Though, some do go faster.

    Artists:.
  • DJ Hixxy
  • Brisk
  • Scott Brown
  • DJ Sy
  • DJ Breeze
  • Cloudskipper
  • DJ Slipmatt
  • Ham

Trancecore

In many ways the hardcore version of anthem and epic trance, complete with anthems and breakdowns. Still the same cheezy, uplifting formula we know and love, but faster and harder.

    Traits of Trancecore include:
  • Anthems ripped from Anthem Trance or Happy Hardcore.
  • Lyrics ripped from Anthem Trance or Happy Hardcore.
  • Breakdowns ripped from Anthem Trance, although the pads are often replaced with saws or hoovers.
  • BPM are usually around 160-180 to distinguish it from regular trance.

Artists: CLSM, Sharkey

Ditto on the PMing thing

Freeform/Acidcore

Freeform is the stupidest name ever. Don't use it.
Acidcore is to Classic/Acid Trance what Trancecore is to Eurotrance.

    Traits of Acidcore include:
  • Acid as a dominant, if not the main, synth.
  • Dark, brooding tone.
  • Acid.
  • Acid.
  • TB-303.
  • BPM are usually around 170-200.
  • Acid.

An explination of what a hoover is would be useful, I think.

Hoover: that jet-engine, car-racing, vacuum-in-reverse sound. Shares the same relationship to those three sounds as acid does to a bass guitar.
Considered "the" hardcore synth for some reason.

~Hardstyle

This genre belongs with both Trance and Hardcore. So, don't sue me.

This Nu NRG and Hard Trance are what's currently hitting the mainstream rave.

    Traits of Hardstyle include:
  • BPM are around 140-150.
  • Big Kicks (Not completely Overdriven, if at all!), and reverb kick (These are Overdriven)
  • Loud screaming/screaching synths.
  • Lyrics about either the drugs Cocain, LSD, or Ecstasy or are about sex. No Exceptions!

    Artists:
  • Blutonium Boy
  • DJ Pavo
  • DJ Zany
  • The Prophet

We should probably make a note somewhere saying that happycore, trancecore, UK hardcore and acidcore often bleed into one another.

Supposedly there's a difference. I can't actually tell, except for that UK Hardcore lyrics aren't as happy sometimes. Maybe I'm just making that up, as every "Happy Hardcore" mix I get is labelled as "Happy/UK Hardcore"

If I remember correctly, UK Hardcore is just the old school form of Happy Hardcore.

Toytown/old skool rave hardcore.

Should we add that here?
Or should that go with Jungle like in Iskur's guild?
