Ever felt tempted to kill of a character but aren't sure if you should?

If you are, go ahead and post here, let us know a bit about the story, the characters etc. and we'll see if we can help you out ^^

Current character death count: 0

Oh...I am not even in conflict over it anymore. I think I am going to try and pull a George R. R. Martin and kill off all the good characters just when you start to like them twisted

But in all seriousness. I'm kind of a fantasy epic kind of kid, but I hate it when all the main characters in the central group always survive against insurmountable odds just because they are the main characters. I want to make my stories realistic, and have people die and get hurt - some major characters, some minor, depending on what needs to happen.

I've killed off two of mine so far, and then others that were side characters. XD;;

I confess that most of my characters, irregardless of importance to the plot, end up mangled and bloody or experience some other similar grotesque, unromantic death. I'm just sadistic like that. Besides, there are far too many people who think you can't kill one of the main's without letting them soliliquize for a bloody hour and a half while worms gnaw on their limbless torso or some-such. stare

Unless they're bad guys, in which case the deaths are celebrated. And if it's just suspected that a main character has been hurt or killed, all the other characters absolutely must mourn and angst, and if possible, it has to be used as a way around anything that would keep said character from his/her "true love" (I'm looking at you, Kahlan Amnell and Richard bloody Cypher).

See, with my continuing NaNo story, I'm going to kill a 'bad' character and Soren, my main character, is pretty 'I'm glad you're dead, you sadistic b***h'. But my other main character, Aumir, was friends with her since childhood and I'm fairly sure they had some kind of sexual relationship at some point... so he's really quite upset.

And then they fight about this biggrin

I kill off another character mainly for a bit of interest, because it fits her, for the fun character development in Reiss and some added motivation for Soren. No suspected death which isn't really death for the sake of uniting characters with their true loves.

Oh, and I kill my main characters in the end and admittedly there will be a bit of soliloquy, but in my defence the method of their death is a fairly slow one. And it's more of a panicked, 'argh, help, we're going to die, this isn't right!' than a passionate eloquent speech.

Do I pass?

I'm not mean. I feel like character death can do wonders for characters.

Hmm... I think it's fun to kill off a character or characters just to irritate your readers. xd

Also, if you've described said character(s) in a certain fashion that makes your readers fall in love with them and then kill off the character(s), just watch your readers go bonkers and actually mope for a non-existant person or persons. ^^;

I killed off my main character's best friend in my NaNo novel. He was a really nice, really sweet guy so I thought I'd kill him and see what people thought XD. Poor boy.

Ah, I killed one of my own favourite characters just because I liked her! crying I killed my precious Dawnrose!!! She was, like, setting up to be the hero's romance interest and because I didn't want a happy ending and I liked her so much... Sniff. I'm hoping people will be as depressed about it as I was because she wasn't some stupid damsel-in-distress nor was she I'm the complete opposite of that but I still get captured... She was... so naive and friendly and what she didn't give in strength she gave in loyalty and cunning... Oh my dear Rose... Why?

WHY DID I DO SUCH A TERRIBLE THING!?!? gonk

Well, I've thought about killing one of the maincharacter in my unfinished nano, but I never got that far.

I might write it in the holidays. Could be amusing.

I pretty much start the story out with killing a whole village. Gore. ^^

I'm also thinking about making a Mary Sue and killing her off in a horrible way, anyone got a good idea?

I'm thinking insects at the moment, of some sort.

@obvious oxymoron - I've always thought that the Egyptian way of locking a live person in a coffin full of flesh eating bugs would be a terrible way to die.

Gives me the shivers just thinking about it gonk

I've killed off one of my main characters and several villains, though only one I did with relish. Other characters have been sliced and diced, but have still survived, and others I torture pschologically- several of these ones have made me look at them and go "This one's going to scarred for life."
