I prefer Sarah Brightman over Emmy Rossum, in general. Putting aside purist bias...
My only problem with Sarah Brightman is that she is shrill and her vibratto can become rapidly irritating.
While Sarah Brightman is not my favorite Christine, I prefer her infinitely over Emmy Rossum who slides every last one of her notes and it grates on my nerves to the point where I cannot stand her. Her voice does have potential, but it is far too young sounding in my mind. Also, there's a quality in her tone that really does not strike home with me, and I won't forgive her for her cadenza in 'Think of Me'...

i actually quite adore the sweet sound of emmy rossums voice. i think she is excellent. But considering sarah brightman is my favourite female singer of all time, i'll have to go with her. however i'm not a big fan of sarahs singing in the majority of the phantom soundtrack. in comparison to her other songs(such as; the last words you said, time to say goodbye, deliver me, etc.) her singing could obviously be a lot better.

She has sung "Time To Say Goodbye" as in Andrew Lloyd Webber's attempt at Phantom II? Where might you be able to direct me to this?

Emmy is meh. Not to mention she's got the completely wrong type of voice for Christine. (IMO)
Christine, I think, needs a much more bright, happy tone since that's the character she's playing. Rossum, while her voice is just fine, is just too dark for Christine. (Sorry Girls, but if you wanna sing Christine and make me happy, your voice HAS to be bright.)

Different ideas for different voices... but if you listen to Sarah's lower range it's a lot less low sounding than Rossum's range. Rossum's voice is a lot more like Butler's, while Brightman's is much like Crawford's. I think if you heard Sarah singing with Butler, or Rossum singing with Crawford, it would be much more easy to pick out. (I could be wrong, though)
