[BANNER]

The magical beasts of Somnium come from many origins. Some are monstrous hybrids of normal beasts, or conjured from arcane, far-off realms. Others may be the creations of powerful mages, created for some specific purpose. However, the vast majority of beasts are actually completely natural. They evolved, just like our own animals, out of the sea. Their evolutionary predecessors developed magical powers, which were honed over the course of millions of years.

The most commonly accepted evolutionary model is called the Draconic-Gryphonic Model. It asserts that all modern dragons, gryphons, and mystical birds are descended from one group of primitive fishes.

Page-stretching evolution chart HERE!

The Draconic-Gryphonic Model does not account for individual species. It tracks the evolution of larger orders that share a broad range of physical features. The Draconic-Gryphonic Model doesn't include, say, Seabat Dragons, but it does show the Leviathan order, which includes Seabats.

Not all naturally evolved Somnium beasts fit on the Draconic-Gryphonic model. They are descended from other prehistoric species that have been studied less extensively.

[Draeconfishes]

Draeconfishes are the theoretical ancestors of all dragons and gryphons. They look similar to coelocanths, with multiple fins and craggy faces. They posess very limited magic, mostly geared towards survival. They usually use their magic to propel themselves through the water at faster speeds. They're not smart enough to do much else. Although most Draeconfish species are now extinct, a few specimens have been spotted in the deep waters off the southern coast of Lacerta.

[Sea Serpents]

Sea Serpents are directly related to Draeconfishes. They are usually long, snakelike fish with huge jaws and not much else. Sea Serpents have been linked to sea storms and whirlpools. People assume that they still exist, but there have been very few records of them since the Viking days. Most recent reports of Sea Serpent sightings are probably just the hallucinations of drunken sailors, or perhaps manatees.

[Prehistoric Salamanders*]

Prehistoric Salamanders are the first dragonlike vertebrate to emerge onto the land. They had three pairs of legs, and the ability to squirt a flammable liquid from their nose and mouth as self-defense. Human scientists believe that the Salamander's middle pair of legs evolved into the wings that dragons and gryphons have.

[Paleodraeci*]

The first 'true' dragons. Paleodraeci could breathe fire and had strong jaws for taking down prey. They are stocky and low to the ground. They had small, developing wings at their sides, but could not fly.

[Paleo-Ryu*]

The first Asian dragons. They were thinner and more agile than their European counterparts. Fossil records show that they had larger skulls than the Paleodraeci and Paleowyverni, indicating that they were probably intelligent enough to use their magic effectively. They probably had some rough, coarse fur along their backs.

[Paleowyverni*]

The first wyverns. Their front legs were small and useles, and they had large, fully developed wings. They still had their hind legs, and probably lived on the ground, only flying when they had to escape from predators.

[Classical Dragons]

The typical European dragons. Like sharks and crocodiles, Classical dragons have existed for millions of years without changing. They are intelligent and very powerful. Although they've evolved very little, there is a wide variety of species which fall under the 'Classical' category.

[Asiatic Dragons]

The long, sleek dragons of Chinese and Japanese folklore. They usually have no wings, instead flying by use of magic. They usually have some kind of fur as well as scales. Some Asiatic dragons look practically mammalian, but they all have very reptillian skeletons.

[Paleogryphi*]

The first gryphons. The Paleogryphi resembled rodents with tiny batlike wings that were good only for gliding, not flying. They also had small horns.

[Wyverns]

Limbless dragons. Wyverns have only wings, no legs, and are usually poisonous. They live almost exclusively in the air. They are smaller and less intelligent than other dragons.

[Archaeophoenixes*]

The first dragonlike birds. Archaeophoenixes were partially feathered and had the beginnings of a beak, but still retained reptillian teeth.

[Leviathans]

Leviathans, like whales, were once land-dwelling creatures that returned to the sea. They share their habitat with the Sea Serpents, but are generally more intelligent. The Loch Ness Monster is probably some form of Leviathan.

[Saber-Toothed Gryphons*]

Contrary to their name, not all 'Saber-Toothed' gryphons had prominent fangs. The S-T gryphons are a group of almost-modern gryphons who were had more mammal features than bird features, including teeth.

[Pegotheriums*]

Pegotheriums had the beginnings of many-toed hooves. They evolved to closely imitate the actual horse, but with horns and leathery wings.

[Rocs]

Enormous, dragonlike birds with long legs and eaglelike features. They are said to be strong enough to pick up elephants and fly away with them.

[Phoenixes]

Dragonlike birds, considerably smaller than rocs, who are famous for their fire-based magical powers. They have long tail-feathers that resemble those of the peacock.

[Quetzalcoatls]

The legendary 'feathered serpents.' Quetzalcoatls look basically like large snakes with wings and feathers. They are rare, and revered as gods in certain cultures.

[Basilisks and Cockatrices]

The terms 'basilisk' and 'cockatrice' are interchangeable, as both refer to a creature that is part-snake and part-chicken, with the ability to petrify its prey.

[Gryphons]

The classic image of a gryphon is half-eagle, and half-lion. In fact, however, a gryphon can have features resembling any mammal and any bird. They are generally intelligent, and some have a parrotlike ability to speak.

[Unicorns]

Unicorns generally resemble one-horned horses, but there are certain unicorn species with cloven hooves, or catlike ears, or donkey's tails, or any number of unhorseike traits. They are all very intelligent and possess very powerful magic. Their horns are said to purify water.

[Pegasi]

Pegasi are any horselike creatures with wings. Contrary to popular belief, many species of Pegasus are too heavy to fly. Pegasi and Unicorns are able to interbreed, creating hybrids called Pegacorns (Pegasus mother, Unicorn father) and Winged Unicorns (Unicorn mother, Pegasus father).

[Kirin]

Related closely to the unicorn, but with a much wider variety of physical features. Different species of Kirin are described as horned dogs, lions, deer, oxen, and giraffes.

The origin of the intelligent races of Somnium is constantly under debate. While some scholars believe that the theory of evolution applies to the humans, elves, nagas, etc., the majority of the population believes that the separation between man and beast is much wider. Every religion on Somnium has its own beliefs about the origin of the intelligent races, and most involve divine intervention in some way.

[Humans]

Humans range from about 5-6 feet tall, with round ears and limited magic powers. Their hair and eye colors are limited to a handful of earthy tones, plus the occasional red hair and blue or green eyes. They have no fur, just head hair and varying amounts of wiry body hair. Although the Human race has no physical advantages over the other races, Humans are notorious for their inventiveness and competitive nature.

Through their political structure and scientific advances, the Humans have secured their place as a powerful presence in Somnium. The Human kingdom of Patria is Somnium's oldest continuous civilization to date, and the Human language has been adopted by nearly all the other intelligent races. For example, nearly all the intelligent races make use of the adjective humanoid to describe upright, bipedal species.

[Elfs]

To the untrained eye, Elfs are almost identical to Humans. Indeed, they are remarkably similar in both culture and appearance. However, it's actually easy to tell the difference if you know what you're looking for. Elfs have pointed ears, as apposed to the Humans' round, funnel-shaped ears. Elfs tend to be taller, with slimmer skeletal frames, and more delicate facial features. Their hair and eye colors have a much wider range than those of Humans.

The Elfin culture believes that the Elfin race is subordinate to the natural world it occupies. While many intelligent races strive to master and reshape the land they live on, the Elfs build around it. Elfin homes are specifically modeled to accomodate for the trees and rocks that were already there. Because this kind of construction inevitably requires lots of delicately curved lines and incredible structural integrity, the Elfs have developed an unsurpassed level of craftsmanship. Elfin culture is focused around art, and Elfin art is focused around the beauty of nature. Merchants will travel halfway across Somnium just to get their hands on valuable Elfin luxury goods.

[Faerys]

Faerys (also called Fairies, Faerys, Fae, Fay, and Fee, depending on the dialect) are a very elusive race that hasn't been studied nearly as much as the other races. They are rarely visible by non-Faerys, and when they do appear they tend to raise more questions than they answer. Because so little is known about them, the other races tend to blame their misfortunes on Faery magic.

What we do know is that Faerys are very small, Elflike folk, with insectoid wings of various colors and shapes. They possess powerful magical powers and control over nature. The Elfin race is best accquainted with the Faerys, through their mutual appreciation of the natural world, but even the Elfs know very little about them.

[Nagas]

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

Their are two recognized species of Naga in Somnium: the Primal Nagas and the Superior Nagas. Superior Nagas appear Elfin from the waist up, but with long snakey tails in place of legs. Primal Nagas, although they have a humanoid upper body, are predominantly reptillian. One could say that Primals are to Superiors as chimpanzees are to Humans. Primal Nagas are wild and uncivilized. Superior Nagas are a pastoral culture that frequently interacts with the Humans.

The Superior Nagas have a loose, informal ownership of the wide grasslands of Lacerta. They live in small, nomadic tribes that herd Lyre's Minotaur Dragons. The Humans of Patria frequently trade with them for their highly coveted Minotaur leather.

[Unica]

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The Unica are, or were, human...probably. The Unica race has been isolated from the rest of the world for at least twenty thousand years. They are semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers who primarily hunt the Unicorns that populate their homeland. Nearly everything the Unica eat invovles Unicorns in some way. They eat their meat and innards, use their bones for broth, and even drink their raw, partially-congealed blood. Generations of eating Unicorns has caused the Unica to absorb the Unicorns' magic. Every Unica child is born with some kind of magical mutation. These traits are unpredictable, even identical twins can be born with ridiculously different powers. Most Unica look human, but their mutations sometimes make it hard to tell what's a Unica and what's a monster.

In recent years, the Human language has replaced the native Unica languages completely. Unica often interact with the Humans of Patria, selling them valuable Unicorn horns in exchange for Human technology. Some Humans believe that they can gain Unica powers by drinking the blood of Unicorns, and pay top dollar for the game that Unica hunters bring down. However, it took hundreds of generations for the Unica to become what they are today. No Human thus far has ever been turned into a Unica.

[Po-Kai]

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show.

The mountain-dwelling Po-Kai intentionally isolate themselves from the rest of Somnium. These birdlike humanoids strive to keep their culture as unchanged as possible. They rarely leave their mountain homes for anything. Some merchants have successfully made contact with the Po-Kai and brought their crops and textiles to Patria, but the majority of outsiders are greeted with a violent reception. It's not really that hard to understand their hostility towards strangers, when you consider that the Superior Nagas have a taste for Po-Kai eggs.

The Po-Kai have feathers and beaks, but they are unable to fly. They live in small horticultural settlements at very high altitudes, where they grow rare crops that exist nowhere else on Somnium.

Ghoblings

The Ghoblings (also known as Goblins) are a race of tiny, chaotic, monstrous troublemakers who plague the island of Maligo. The Ghoblings are intelligent, but their society is primitive. Their leadership is informal and they usually don't acknowledge any kind of authority. A small subculture of Ghoblings has adopted the Human culture. They coexist peacefully with the Humans in the forests of Patria, and call themselves the Hobghoblings.

Ghoblings are about three feet tall, and more or less humanoid. They have large, batlike ears and hooked, crooked noses. Hobghoblings pay attention to hygene and dress as Humans, but normal Ghoblings are dirty, naked little savages.

The non-evolutionary beasts of Somnium fall into two categories. Most come from the deliberate meddling of wizards who wished to play god. Both their successes and failures have become part of the landscape over the generations. Others are more mysterious- they appeared on Somnium via clearly magical means, but with no explainable creator. They are assumed to be the work of higher beings or brought over from other planes of existence that may or may not follow the same laws of biology as Somnium.
