Post here if you need advice on coming out to your family. You aren't alone.

Start with answering these questions:

Why haven't you come out yet?/Why are you afraid/hesitant to come out?
What do you think will be your parent's/sibling's reactions when you come out?

When posting:

1. Please try to be as literate as possible and make good use of capitals, periods, and commas.
2. Don't forget to start new paragraphs when you should.
3. Try to stick to the important stuff, this isn't a rant thread.

Eventually there will be a list of tips on how to deal with coming out to your family here. Please contribute to it by posting your suggestions here.

I have not come out to my family because I know they will not understand what I am going through.

They have a narrow view of gender and sexuallity, and this frustrates me to no end.

I think they will never speak to me again or tell me I am insane, if i decide to ever come out.

I've come out to my parents but not the rest of my family.

I hadn't planned to come out to my parents until I started transition, but as it was, my dad sussed me out. Considering I'd been 'cross-dressing' and generally acting male for ages, it was kind of obvious. He'd kept bringing it up here and there for the past month or so, and I had been thinking about coming out. As it was, he finally mentioned the dreaded t-word, and being too cowardly to spit it out there and then, I wrote a note.

The following morning, my dad spoke to me. He said that although he hadn't experienced anything like that himself, he was trying to understand my situation, and was fine with it - after all, I'll still be the same person if I have a sex change. Occasionally he makes little jokes about it (like when I found I had no pockets on my suit and my mother suggested I take a handbag - I was protesting, and my dad suggested I put the money in my sock and put it down the front of my trousers).
My mother, meanwhile, has not said a word on the subject, apart from to tell me off for being silly when I reject anything girly. Basically, she's in denial. But at least she hasn't got angry.

As for my other relatives, I plan to only tell them after I start transition - really, when it's quite obvious. I imagine they'll react like my parents, in either being accepting or just not talking about it. It does scare me a bit, but it won't be the end of the world for me. I'm probably quite lucky; I'm very grateful for how they've taken it, especially how cool my dad is with it all.

I came out................and one part of it was a pleasant coming out. The part about coming out to my friends.

But the second part was horrible. I told my parents and they freaked. If it wasn't for my grandpa I'd probably have been disowned long ago. sweatdrop

If you look in the mirror and don't like what you see
I'm more or less out to everybody now. Except my extended family and sister.

Every person I considered telling, I always thought "Do they hate gays? Are they going to hate me?" It scared me to death but I eventually mustered up the courage to tell a few friends. They've all been fine with it and my general circle of friends all know I'm gay/bi (not sure which I am anymore; gay probably).

Coming out to my parents happened way different than expected. I was planning to tell them right before I went to college.. But one night, I was eating dinner alone with my mother and she asked me if I was gay. eek I think I almost exploded. So terrifying when it's your parents pulling you out instead of just coming out. But it turned out well. My mom has no problem with it. She told my dad and he's good with it too. It's not an issue in my friends or family so why should I bother them with it.

I'm still frightened to tell extended family. One side of my family is full of conservative Southern Christians, straight outta South Carolina. They don't seem too open to homosexuality. My other side lives in New York and I think they'd accept it better but I still dunno what they'd think.

You can find out firsthand what it's like to be me

Okay I thought it'd be a good time to come out.
Going to therapy and all now..
I'm bi.
But it's against our religion, this whole grrl and grrl and guy and guy thing.
Which is hard to explain to both of 'em, me parents.
Exspecaily me dad, we go to church together every Sunday when we can. Not my mum so much about religion..
But, yeah..
Any suggestions ?

I'm not out to my parents, but my friends know (as does about half of my old high school, I think...even though I've never told any of them eek ). Then again, I don't do a very good job of hiding it. I've got pics of Stevie Nicks and Kate Beckinsale all over my room...and I'm cutting my hair REALLY short this summer...
Two of my friend's parents figured it out just by looking at me... one's mom said she figured it out because a cute guy came by and I was the only chick not checking him out with a "hungry look" in my eyes (I don't even remember the guy she's talking about).
I think my parents may suspect, since I've never had a boyfriend or any real close guy friends who I could use as a cover-up, and my mom found my yahoo personals page which said "woman seeking woman"...It's a good thing she dosen't read my poetry anymore... I'd have a lot to answer for "She and I". They haven't made an issue out of it though. I think they're scared that I'll tell them the truth if they ask me again. They're really conservitive Christians... well my mom is, my dad has his liberal moments, but I'm pretty sure those will go out the window when it's HIS little princess who's checking out some other daddy's little princess...
This is a long post eek . Sorry bout that.
