The situation at my school is weird, and amusing. For some reason all the lads in my year flirt with each other all the time, although they're all thoroughly heterosexual. Not just flirting - hugging, pretending to hump one another, all that. Some of the girls flirt with one another too, but not as much as the boys. Strangely enough, the lad who does it most often is also a hardcore Christian who doesn't believe homosexuality really exists. So how he reconciles his crazy flirting (even though it's just mucking around) with his beliefs is anyone's guess.

But that's just our bunch. We've got the same vague trend of homophobia as D!nocock mentioned, though people tend to grow out of that. I do know that some of the kids who are genuinely gay have been beaten up for it, and quite a few of the boys I know are pretty damn homophobic (as well as sexist, racist and any other kind of bigotry you care to think of).
Still, most people I know are kind, tolerant and accepting, and one's gender or sexuality is no big deal.
