The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is the first book by Heinlein that I've read, and though I struggled through it a little at the beginning, I found that it was really good! I'll probably read Have Spacesuit Will Travel by him next.

To those of you who've read it, feel free to post your opinions on it here. blaugh

His books are well plotted (with standard archetype quality characters for the most part) and he has given us the word "Grok" from Stranger in a Strange Land so I love him for that xd

I haven't actually read the one you mentioned tho.. eek I've read several but the ones that stand out most in my mind have been The Cat Who Walks Through Walls and Stranger... I need to read him a bit wider.. he had strong views on "Free Love" and other interesting things...at least he did when he started.

PS.. oh YES i almost forgot! I also read the mandatory Starship Troopers xD

Wikipedia has a GREAT article on Heinlein

He also gave us TANSTAAFL! I quote it all the time. See, I'll quote it now: "Shut up, tanstaafl! There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch, so GIMME MY MONEY! scream "

heh, I loved stranger in a strange land. it was the only book of his that I have read and it was excellent. Loved the views on free love...on paper only. Tried it in real life and was like...well screw that.

My favorite quote (mayhaps of all time) was

"We laugh because it hurts. Because it's the only thing that makes it stop hurting"

Loved that.

In any event. I should like to read more but I am not so into sci fi stuff. I usually end up enjoying it, but just like books with an actual historical base it takes me a long time to get into it.

Yeah, the free love stuff is tricky... because it's like tanstaafl.. right Not.So? xd

Love is something people have to work hard for.. so how can somethign that takes so much effort be free?

Unconditional love is a much better phrase.

Yeah. I like unconditional love better. Though, free love would probably make more sense if humans weren't so over-populated.

Well, i think "Free Love" has semantic difficulties. Most thigns in life are not free. The air we breath isn't free.. we now have to make sure we keep it clean not polluted.

Do we mean totally unrestricted? Or do we let it go where it may?

"free is so fuzzy a term whereas with unconditional we all know it doesn't mean "just do what you want" .. during the free love movement of the 40-60's men used free love an awful lot to mean "i get to sleep with you and just leave you" which is all right .. except whrn the girl gets pregnant and the scamp scarpers without responsibility at all.

Freida Kahlo had problems with Carlos because of that.
