-The Fifth Deadly Sin-
Gluttony
Like Lust, Gluttony is a sin of the body. It is a lack of control and the act of giving into the body's will no matter what the consequences may be. The word gluttony stems from the Latin word “gluttire”. Meaning to swallow of gulp down, but is also understood to mean overindulgence in any material item. I read that people who seem to do this, seem to have given up on the promises of the afterlife, so they enjoy themselves here on Earth all they can. When someone mentions the word “glutton”, it summons but one image: that of a person whose sin is made evident by a corpulent body and especially a big belly. There are skinny gluttons too. As I said before, gluttony doesn't just have to be with over eating. While reading, I found out that in Catholic teachings, there isn't just one way to eat like a glutton.
1.eat or drink too soon
2.too expensively
3.too eagerly
4.too daintily
5.and last but not least, overeating
Other than eating, gluttony can be the hording away objects and withholding from the needy. In this sense, it sounds a lot like greed. Gluttony is also considered one of the lesser sins. Maybe this is because it is easier for a glutton to change their habits when they finally decide to. But it is still just as deadly and as bad as the other sins. This is because of its tendency to reduce us down to the level, that of an animal. Gluttons lack self-control and self-discipline. As an example, when gluttons drink to excess, we lose our sense of reason. Just another quality that separates us from the lower beast.
Gluttony is represented by the demon named Beelzebub, also known as the Lord of the Flies. Beelzebub began his career as a Canaanite deity and then later became equated with Satan (Darkness).

Gluttons are never satisfied, so they continue their pursuit to gain items, or to over eat, drink, and fulfill the bodies pleasures. In doing so, they soon lose the sense of gratitude. In my eyes, Gluttony is one of the more deadly of sins. The overindulgence of food or drink can kill us by a slow death. It shouldn't be considered one of the lesser of sins when it kills an estimated 400,000 people a year.
