It had taken Lailoken some time to become accustomed to grazing in such close quarters with the hinds. As soon as he had become a buck, his time with the hinds had been cut drastically low as he learned from Outriders how to protect the herd. And then in his years as an Outrider, he had only spent time with the does during Anlach when he bred his harem. Now, however, he was with them almost constantley, living with the calves and fawns to provide them with the knowledge they would need for future life. A storyteller doesn't only sit at Larn with the young ones; he provides guidance during the daytime if they so choose to ask for it.
He moved with ease now around the hinds, grazing peacefully in the warm sunlight. His thoughts dwelled breifly on the idea of finding a harem once again, and keeping his bloodlines flourishing. It was almost always in the back of the minds of stags, for the instinct to create and breed is far stronger than many others, right up there with preservation of life and of the herd. He snorted into the green, shaking his ears from the sneeze. Perhaps that would happen in time, but for now he just wanted a conversation with as many of the does as he could pick up without moving too far. His head raised slowly, surveying the clear day with hopeful eyes. One thing he had learned in his time as the storyteller was how easy it was to talk with the hinds, and at that moment he felt it completely neccesary to do the such.

Eirian prowled through the meadow, well, walked really, but her mannerism could, to anyone who cared to watch the irate hind, be considered as a prowl. At times as a fawn she used to fancy that if she tried hard enough, she could be like a wolf, and though that had failed, the rebellious part of her that lived on still stalked about as one at times. And this was one of those times. By nature, Eirian was not a calm nor a docile hind, she was a fighter, and a little spiteful as well. Those who were around her most seemed to notice she had a thing bucks. Not flirting with them, in fact quite the opposite. She seemed almost to dislike the whole lot of them, and as a result, had never mated with any. Oh, she liked calves and fawns enough, but ever since she was young, she had wanted nothing more than to grow antlers and be an outrider. Of course as a female, that had never happened, and she wasn't stupid enough to go stalking off into the forest antlerless. For that reason she had always found it unfair, although she was proud of the fact that she was one of the "boxing hinds," a group started by Danica, and including a few others. None quite like her though. Though she was not the beset fighter of the group, she had the most grit, which probably came from her jealousy of the "antlered gender." And so here was where she was found today, stalking through the grasses of the meadow, shooting irrate looks at most who happened to pass by. Yes, Eirian, such a lovely creature to be around...

The storyteller lifted his ornate head from the green, hearing some doe stalking about the grass. His head turned to find the offenser, crushing the blades with vigor beneath her. Ah yes, he mused, Eirian. She had spunk, that one did. He chuckled to himself slightly, and then heard Tetyana. He knew most of the hinds' names, as he had been the storyteller for a number of years now, and had met some of them when they were just little things, and the others while he grazed. "Good day to you, Miss Tetyana. I am doing okay, myself. How about you?" He smiled at the hind, having no qualms about her. She was a sweet one, and always kind to him.
Before the hind could reply, however, the regal being turned back his head once more towards the prowling deer, contemplating if he should call her over. Her views of stags were well known in the herd, but Lailoken took a chance. He was no longer an Outrider, after all, and it seemed that most of her anger lied with that group. "Eirian, dear, why don't you come and graze with us for a while?" He posed the question as gentley as he could, trying to not sound like an overpowering 'antlered gender'.

Eirian's head turned slightly as the storyteller, Lailoken, invited her over for a graze with him and another hind. She stopped her stalking, contemplating this for a moment? Did she want to? She shot another glace at the conversing pair. Hmm, that one hind, she had seen at a distance before, but never before met, although she seemed decent enough, if just a little too soft. Then there was Lailoken...who, although being a stag, she felt that she had some measure of respect for. He, although older than many of the bucks, wasn't that old, and one of the only ones that didn't charge around acting like they controlled the world with their antlers, and their hormones. He was, she decided, fairly tolerable.
Feeling she had nothing better to do anyways, Eirian gave a small shrug and made her way over to Lailoken and the other hind, dipping her head breifly at both, addressing them with a sprse bit of politeness that she managed to drag out sometimes. "Lailoken, and...I'm sorry I don't know your name," she said, to the storyteller first, and then addressing the other hind.

Lailoken thought for a moment, casting his mind over his daily doings, searching for a time when he had really chatted with Hitanie. He couldn't think of a time the pair had had a long conversation, but he did know of her. "Well, I don't know her well, but I do know who she is." He nodded to Tetyana, smiling slightly. It was always nice to see siblings getting along with eachother. Siblings who knew eachother, for that matter. Many deer knew who their half brothers or sisters were, but they didn't always actually care about eachother. It was refreshing to see deer that really spent time with their kin. Lailoken himself never cared for his brothers and sisters, after all.
"Good day, Eirian." He nodded politely, having some experiance with hinds of her nature. Though he'd never truely met a hind with such vigor as she, he had met hinds that were hostile towards the stags. He had learned that being polite and gentlemenly was the best way to go, so long as he didn't 'baby' her, for she might find that offensive. The perfect mix of ignoring the fact that she was a hind and being a gentlemen at the same time worked, though it could get rather confusing at times.

The hind gave a small dip of her head at the storyteller's greeting. "You as well - Lailoken." She hesitated breifly before saying his name, not quite sure whether it would be better to call him storyteller or just his name. But then, storyteller made him seem so different, but then, did Lailoken sound too informal? She pondered this a little. No, wait, why would she be wondering? It wasn't as though she cared or anything. Because she didn't. Pah, paying attention to a stag? How pathetic.
She gave a toss of her head, forgetting about the little conversation in her mind. Better to just enjoy the day. It was after all, quite nice out, and she'd hate to spoil it for herself, especially when she'd said a whole sentance to the two of them. She lowered her head and took a mouthful of grass, slightly unsure of what to do now.

The stag smiled to himself; perhaps she wasn't the ice queen the herd thought her to be? Of course, he knew quite well that she wasn't. It was often that the hinds of the herd used their vicious tongues for personal gain, and gossiped of the females they did not like. Word spread like wild fire that way, and it was with a smirk that he broke the rumors by actually spending time with the victims of such slander. The example of such a situation before him, he decided, would do for the day. "And how are you doing, Eirian?"

"Well, the grass is green and the whether is nice and it is an altogether fairly pleasent day. So I am enjoying it." She said, head bobbing a little as she reinforced this fact. The reinforcement was more for herself than anything, for it was rare that they asked her how she was doing. Usually they avoided those questions and steered more towards things like the whether, safe topics. She suspected that they thought if they asked her how she was they might regret it. Not that she could blame them, she did have a tendancy to act rather cold at times. Or most of the time. Oh wait, she should say something back shouldn't she? Yes, a question for a question right?
"So..." she paused a little to try and form a question in her mind. "How are you?" No, that really wasn't a very good question at all, she had simply been repeating what he had said to her! But, she had found nothing else that she could say. She really wasn't very experienced in the art of conversation, and it probably showed.

Lailoken smirked to himself, and cast a sideways glance at Tetyana, giving her an opening into the conversation. When he heard no word from her, he took it upon himself to continue. "Ah, but the grass is often green if you find it in the right light." Perhaps it was because he was a storyteller, and was so entirely used to telling young fawns sayings and cliches, that he brought such a statement to light. It was true, however, for even on the darkest of nights, the grass is vivid green out of the shadows. "The weather, I agree, is quite satisfactory. It's cooling down quite nicely." The coming onset of frigid temperatures was nothing the stag was looking forward to. Though he was not so old that he could not handle a temperature drop, his knees were a bit more on the sensitive side than in his youth.
The proud creature lowered his head for a few moments, taking in the lush vegitation the pair had spoken of. It was, much to his satisfaction, quite juicey. It wouldnt stay that way for long, of course. The season's change would bring a drier, scarcer breed of grass, and the Herla and Lera a like would be estatic to find something this delicious. It was a thing that was often taken for granted in the three seasons that it existed, the lush greens. He lifted his head and smiled. "I am doing quite well, thank you." He gave a polite nod and continued. "The hinds that were so gifted with healthy pregnancies this season should birth soon. Hitanie and Dyani, I believe they were. Newborns have always been an interest for me."
In his younger years, as an outrider, he had rarely been able to see the young fawns, and only met his sons when they grew to Corps, as we entirely natural. When he himself was just a calf, he had taken an interest in the newborns, and had even gone so far as to help his mother with her new brood. When he had become the storyteller, those few years ago, he had suddenly been given the unique oppurtunity to see the young ones again, and made sure he saw all the new little ones of the season. It was a perk, you could say, of his title, that he could spend so much time down in the valley with the hinds and their young.

Having no sure response to his poetic observation of the grass, the chocolate/tan hind just nodded. She took a small mouthful of grass, chewing slowly as she brooded. Yes, the weather was indeed cooling down. And that meant that winter was fast approaching. "Yes," she said slowly. "I must say I'm not looking forward to the cold and the snow." But then again, what deer did? Winter was a harsh season, for all lera. It erased the grass and other foods, making them scarce, hard to find. Bark was often a staple for their diet in the winter, as unappealing as it was. Her ear twitched slightly as she thought of what else. Yes, the wolves. Many of them with darker or brighter coats would be prime targets for the beasts. She herself wasn't to bad, the natural blend of her kide settled nicely against the trees. She chuckled a little. "That small fawn, the white one. I daresay no one will be able to see her when the snows come." Good for the fawn then, winter may be what saved her, as opposed to summer, where her strange hide could be seen from a mile.
"Ah yes, the pregnant hinds. It will be nice to have some newborns around. They're quite cute," she admitted, finally warming a little to the conversation, finding her words came easier now. She had always thought newborn deer to be adorable, their gangly legs, and the way they bounded about, tripping over themselves so often. It brought a smile to her face to watch them, how innocent and curious they were. She found that she, like Lailoken had often liked the young deer, though she had not had much time around them. She had spent her youth charging around and wondering if it was possible to permanently fasten sticks to her brow. Thinking back now, it would have been nice to have spent a little more time around them, rather than brushing them off irrately as she had so often done. Now of course, with the arrogance of youth mostly passed, she was more engrossed by them, and no longer had the attitude of older child to younger.

ooc :: sorry this took forever. exams and all. x___x;;
Lailoken nodded enthustiastically at that. "I am no fan of the snow. It freezes my joints up." The stag laughed at that, knowing full well that he wasn't as bad as he could be. Though he was aged, he was not so old as to be a cripple hobbling about the meadows with creaking bones and dying antlers. No, the male still proudley sported his rack, which, though it had grown back, was quite magnificent if he did say so himself. The pride and joy of his life, those ornaments were, as he had no harem or new young. Though he was quite pleased with his position in the herd, and loved all the calves dearly, he was still a stag and still had staggly pride to deal with.
"Mmm, yes, young Tegwen, her name is. She will disappear in the snow. Her twin, however, that black stubborn thing... She'll stand right out all season." Lailoken wondered for a moment how Dyani, their adoptive mother, would deal with the twins. Keeping track of the albino would be quite hard for any hind, and making sure the melanistic wasn't in a wolves belly would be even harder. And with those two new young ones! That poor thing, keeping track of four little fawns all winter long. "I do have a slight fear for the new youngsters in the herd, I admit. It will be a tough winter for them, that's for sure." He nodded to himself grimly at that, but suddenly grew light and optimistic. "They are all capable hinds, though, and will surely lead their charges through the cold months safely."
At the appearance of Tetyana, the storyteller nodded politely. He truely didn't mind if any creature was to walk away from conversation, so long as there was a good and true excuse. "You're fine, Tetyana." His own was of saying no problem was used, which most of the herd had come to know in time. With the skidding excitement of Hitanie and her calf, Lailoken took a few steps back in surprise. He truely wasn't in the mood to get crashed into, but was pleased to see the new arrival up and about. "Lovely son you have there, Hitanie. He looks like his father."

Eirian allowed small chuckle. Though she knew the snow was no friend to any of them, she was quite confident that the storyteller was a good deal more able than he liked to let on. He was a humble thing though, which in her opinion was far better than being overenthusiastic about one's ego. That fact was of course obvious, as she showed nothing less than complete despise for those stags that did consider themselves Herne's gift to the world.
"Mmm, yes I do not doubt the hinds are more than capable. And I'm positive any of the hinds or does would more than willing to help out one of our own if she struggles." Her head turned at the reappearance of Tetyana and her rambunctious sister. "A lovely calf indeed Hitanie. My congratulations." Had she been in a not so good mood, she would have added in a sarcastic comment of 'pray that he doesn't yurn out to much like his father.' But as she had the tact to recognize the rudeness of that comment, especially in this situation. However she did have a great deal of dislike for Pride. Deciding it may be time to excuse herself, she gave a small bow to the four. "I thank you for the company, but I do believe it is time for me to be off now. See you." And with another small nod she was off.
