okay, i have a chapter test in Algebra tomorow and the teacher gave out problems for us to do. So far i got every one of them right, But there is one i dont know how to solve. Okay the question, its about the permutation theorum:
How many ways can 14 books be lined up on a shelf?
Im not sure how to solve this one cause i cant find that button on my calculator
Any help is appreciated, thanx mrgreen heart

You do it using factorials. I'm guessing you know what factorials are.
The answer is
14! = 14*13*12*11*10*9*8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1
I got 87178291200 possible combinations. Is that the correct answer?
Anyone feel free to correct me.
Also, think of this logically and as to why this works:
Assign a number to each book.
you can have
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14
You can scramble that up any way. I am 99.9% sure that that is right.
For the button on your calculator, I probably cannot help you if you have anything other than a TI-89, because I've got a TI-89.
If you have a TI-89, then, you do this:
1. Press Home 2. Press 2nd + "+" 3. Press 3 to go to Punctuation 4. Press 1, so you can get "!"
Anyone who can help with other calculators, please post.

on a TI-84 or 83 jsut press ON then 14*13*12*11*10*9....

fluffydacow on a TI-84 or 83 jsut press ON then 14*13*12*11*10*9.... The problem with that is that it is tedious and takes a long time, especially if you are time... For example, if you want to find 435!, I don't think you would want to do that... I'm thinking that for a TI-84 or a TI-83, you would go to 2nd MATH and find it, or you can go to Catalog and find !
