W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Heard of 'em?

I've been into them ever since the movie Topsy Turvy was released (you know, with Jim Broadbent?). And yet, I can never find someone who's heard of them, much less enjoys their stuff. So I thought I'd try'n find some people here. c:

Titles:
The Mikado
HMS Pinafore
the Pirates of Penzance
the Sorcerer
etc etc.

I've always wanted to act/sing in one, even though all the leading female parts have extremely high, almost operatic registers. But these days all anyone wants to do is new stuff like Wicked or Rent (which are both really great, don't get me wrong).

So. Erm. Discuss:
-Favorite plays by them
-Acting in them
-The movie
-whatever...

i love their style, it's so bouncy. I was in Pirates of Penzance (pirate/police. I got a big french moustache and a pretty blue hat), and I loved it. I bought the soundtrack recently, too. I tried to watch the video of Mikado... it didn't work. I couldn't understand them, and my friend didn't get why they were singing.

I've seen H.M.S. Pinafore and been in Pirates of Penzance. Most enjoyable show I've been in so far, but one can't help but note that the music from the two are remarkably similar. I know there's a reason for this, so there's no use chastizing me.

Yeah, Pirates of Penzance was my first G&S show. I can actually sing "I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General". And the Animaniacs version. And how Kurt Vonnegut used that as a chapter title in Cat's Cradle.

They are quite talented, in my opinion.

I love everything I have seen yet from Gilbert and Sullivan. I got my first dose of their work in fall of 2003 with the Harvard-Radcliffe Gilbert and Sullivan Players' production of The Gondoliers. I've been to everyone of their shows since then (Iolanthe, The Pirates of Penzance, Princess Ida, Ruddigore, and Yeomen of the Guard), as well as a couple of elementary/high school productions (HMS Pinafore included), watching Topsy Turvy, and listening to various recordings. I go to my next production The Pinafore (this time, staring people taller than 5ft biggrin )
Favourite operettas by G&S, in order:
Yeomen of the Guard
Iolanthe
Ruddigore (Mad Margaret is the best.)

Acting in them:
All I can say for this is that most of the HRG&SP are absolutely superb...and I'm going to sorely miss all of the recent graduates I spent 3 years falling in love with in this years' Pinafore.

The movie:
Topsy Turvy? It was long and slow, but I loved it.
