Questions:
Why do you think Heiderich coughs up blood (similar to Izumi)?
Doesn't he look a little too like the "perfect German"?
How similar is he to Alphonse Elric?
The first Heiderich pairing you can think of.
In the end, was he a likeable character?

Why do you think Heiderich coughs up blood (similar to Izumi)?: Prolonged exposure to rocket fuel - at least, that's what Wikipedia says. xd
Doesn't he look a little too like the "perfect German"?: I noticed that he and all of his buddies (even Ed - kinda) were models for that. That was weird.
How similar is he to Alphonse Elric?: Well, they both care about Ed... but I think that's pretty much it.
The first Heiderich pairing you can think of. EdxHeiderich (inspired by FMA Movie in Five Minutes Summary - NOT MINE)
In the end, was he a likeable character?: Definately. He had his own goals and gave them up to give Ed a chance to go back to Amestris. That's what I would call a good friend.

Why do you think Heiderich coughs up blood (similar to Izumi)? Because he has some sort of illness thingie. He has all of his organs; he's just unlucky enough to have some sort of random fatal disease.
Doesn't he look a little too like the "perfect German"? Well, that's the whole point, isn't it? (Actually, he looks a lot to me like a good friend of mine... who I haven't seen in almost 3 years...)
How similar is he to Alphonse Elric? Sort of, kind of.

A lot of people in Germany have blue eyes and blond hair. I know, I was there (there are especially a lot of blue/gray/light-colored eyes, everyone in my host family had them, even the cousins). It was a little strange that every one of those guys working with him looked like that too, but it helps explain a little why the nazis wanted them to do their work.
How similar is he to Alphonse Elric?
I think he's pretty similar at base points. Al's super-passionate about alchemy while Alfons is super-passionate about alchemy's alter!version: physics. The reason they appear different is because they were both raised very differently, and Alfons is a lot older. But dispite how differently they were raised, Alfons still shows some of Al's super-accepting characteristics (remember Al with the Ishbalans?) by helping Ed take care of Noa even though she's a gypsy. 3nodding

If he had an illness it was probably tuberculosis, which isn't at all random or rare (at least for that time period - we're all vaccinated for it now). Almost everyone Edgar Allan Poe loved died from it (explains a lot about his mentality, doesn't it?) and, in the 19th and early 20th centuries (where Shambala takes place), it was the endemic disease of the urban poor. In 1815, it caused one in four deaths in England and by 1918 it caused one in six deaths in France. It was not until 1946 (Shambala takes place in 1923) that effective treatment and cure became possible. Although it states in Wikipedia that it was the rocket-fuel (which is probably the cause), I have never officially heard what was wrong with Alfons from those who made the movie, and the whole coughing up blood thing is a definite sign of tuberculosis. So if it wasn't the rockets, it was that.

Why do you think Heiderich coughs up blood (similar to Izumi)? nah... he just cought a cold and wasn't cool enough to beat it xd ... He was poisoned by rocket fuel. Besides he had to be 'going to die' otherwise we'd feel extremely guilty when he died for Ed to get back to his own world, especially since Ed comes back to ours
Doesn't he look a little too like the "perfect German"? I think that's kind of the idea, because he joins the good side of the force even though he would be welcome on the dark side as well (don't ask why the sudden reference to star wars)
How similar is he to Alphonse Elric? he's not really, Al's much cooler! But they both did die for Ed, but that's the only reason, except he looks like his identical twin (but so does Ed, it creeps me out how much Al and Ed look alike O.o) and he has the same name.

In the end, was he a likeable character? Yeah, he died for Ed. That makes him cool in my book. Though I feel kind of sorry for him, he can never compare to Al, in Ed's prospective or in ours, but he kind of thought of Ed as a brother... so yeah. It kind of made me sad emo
