Magical Starsign is a DS game by the people who created the original Mana series -- the ones that aren't employed by Squeenix. They call themselves Brownie Brown, and Magical Starsign is a sequel to Magical Vacation, which never made it to the States. (I have a copy in Japanese. I can't READ it ... and it's very plot-heavy. *sigh*)
I cracked this one last night. Ooooh, it's good. Cute and fluffy. The combat system is simple, which is OK by me. I'm more in it for the plot, which so far has been very entertaining.
Professor Madeleine has been sent by Principal Biscotti to the wind planet Puffoon to deal with a rogue student named Kale, who is apparently causing trouble and hiring air pirates and such things. Miss Madeleine's students are understandably concerned, particularly when she doesn't return after three months, and they search about the Will'o'Wisp Academy to find some rockets and go searching for her. At this point, my character is crash-landed on Erd (the earth planet), after having found one of the other students (Lassi, a lop-eared rabbit), and we are in negotiations with the Spiny Mole King to get our rockets repaired.
The game contains the MV signature style -- since your characters are mage students, their primary form of attack is via magic. Every student has an elemental type. Your character gets to choose light or dark magic. Pico uses fire, Sorbet uses water, Lassi uses wind, Mukko uses earth, and Chai uses wood. The setup of the planets (Earth, Wind, Fire, Water, and Wood) affects how powerful their magic is -- you can check this in the top screen. Light magic is more effective in daytime, and dark magic at night.
Unlike Magical Vacation, you also get some small physical attacks. Magic is more potent, but the physical attacks give you some recovery time to get your MP back. There are also items you can use, of course.
So far I am LOVING this game. heart
