So, we all know that Erik demanded 20,000 franks a month, but why did he need it? I mean, he could have stolen everything from the Opera, and he wouldn't have gone outside to use it if he did need to use it.

So why would he demand all of the franks?

Francs, actually.

He couldn't have stolen everything from the opera. Even Erik needs clothes, shoes, soap, and things like that- things he wouldn't be able to find readily on hand. And sooner or later, people would notice the little things going missing.

We know he kept a post office box, and he had that carriage on call. Those would cost money, as would his 'excellent wine cellar'. And all the stuff he bought for Christine.

Still, 20,00 francs a month is a lot of money. Maybe he was supporting a mistress on the side? xD
