So I've recently concluded my Gregory Maguire kick. I've read Wicked, Son of a Witch, Lost, Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, and just finished Mirror Mirror.

Has anyone else read his books? Which was your favorite if you have.

I love how he takes common stories and changes them to give you a new perspective, or like with Wicked, he took the character of the wicked witch of the west and gave her a complete life, completely changing the feelings you may have had towards this character from your youth. It changed mine, I love elphie! heh heh.

Wicked was my favorite. It was still the story of the Wizard of Oz, he just gave more information on an under-represented character.

With the other books, it was almost like he just took elements from the traditional story but created something new.

its boring talking to myself.....anyone else want to join?

I'm not familiar with the book Wicked, despite the fact I own the darn thing. gonk Well, my friend's had it for quite a while, though...

... I'm only familiar with the musical... sweatdrop heart

I read the first page or so, and then flipped through and such.
I found the way the author writes is so beautifully done. It leaves this hollow... musky feeling. I'm not sure how to put it.

I think the idea put behind it is amazing. 4laugh

No, I haven't read them, myself. But you intrigue me. I think I'll go and pick one up. Which one do you recommend for people just getting into his fiction? Wicked?

I guess it depends what you like Dharma.

I would say wicked or mirror mirror.

Wicked is nice because he doesnt actually change the story of the wizard of Oz. he starts with the wicked witch being born and follows her life up until dorothy comes to the castle. he does have a unique spin on some of the characters and plot developments but the story is essentially the same.

Most people that I have talked to say that wicked is the best.

I really did like mirror mirror though as well. The story is loosely snow white but not. And he actually uses real people from history that sort of fit the fairytale people. I don't know how to describe that but when I learned that Lucrezia Borgia actually existed, it made the book three times better at least.

Another thing that is unique with his writing is that his writers voice doesn't exist, its the characters. I get irritated when you read multiple books from the same author and no matter that the story is different.....they all sound the same you know? They don't change, but Maguire does. Mirror Mirror is a bit crude in dialogue, it reads more harsh and rugged. Son of a which was very slow and sort of dopey (it fits the character of Lir...he's not very exciting) and wicked....wicked was an intense book because elphaba was such an intense and powerful character. I guess thats what it is, he writes as his characters so his books are so different and entertaining.

clearly I just like his work, go read wicked....then mirror mirror...than confessions.

I would advise against son of a which and Lost unless you really need a book! smile

Oh, dear fluffy lord.

Wicked got me interested in Maguire. Mirror, Mirror got me hooked. Are there rehab groups for litarature?

Hello, my name is Keridwynn, and I'm a literaholic.
"Hiii, Keri!"
-sits down-

There, much better now.

Somehow, I got off-topic. Ah well.

I've been dying to find a copy of Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister, but to no avail. Thinking about picking up Son of a Witch, if only for Liir.

By the bye, am I alone in thinking Fiyero was one sexy man? D:

Mitternits, love the signature.

I believe I shall, Dhar. heart

On another note, I think it says something about myself when I read "friends" as "fiends". XD

yes!! fiyero was one sexy man!! oh my. (Is that weird? well..you admitted it first so I think I am okay!! heh)

Confessions was good, I do hope you get a copy soon, its a neat one to send your mind boggling

I really don't recommend Lost, really...I just don't.

So you really like Liir aye? He does get flushed out a bit in son of a witch, more of a complete character. He has an interesting story...but not my favorite.

(This is mitter by the way)

yes, I do like my quote, I read it somewhere before...in a book or online somewhere and I just loved it so much, it is so very true. Thanks for noticing!! smile

I thought Liir was an adorable dope. heart It does me good to see those kinds of characters every now and then.

Besides, I figure the sequel can't be any worse than some of the recent books I've read. >_>

..

Whoops.
