Prologue

The world is in shambles. A ruined shadow of its once great state. Now the people of the world live in fear. Fear of dieing; fear of being alone; but most of all fear of the demons that rule them.

In one weeks time this age of demon supremacy will have been going on for nine years. The night this all started has been given the name of Red Moon. A fitting title for the bloody scene that welcomed those who lived to be servants to their attackers. Anyone who remembers what life was like before Red Moon won’t speak of it… and most humans won’t ask for fear of being punished by their demon masters.

As for the girl… her beginnings are a bit of a mystery… even to herself. She doesn’t remember anything before Red Moon. The night the demons found her village.

*Flashback*

Fire raged outside threatening the building structure. The roar of the flames would forever be etched into the young girls mind, “Daddy! Daddy!”

“Over here, baby!” The man looked at the top of his daughter’s head as she ran to him. Long black hair with streaks of white, “Honey,” his baby girl look up, “Do you remember where the tree I said was our secret spot is?”

“… Yeah…” she answered. Her light brown eyes grew larger as questions filled her head. Her father placed a hand on her head and squatted down to her level.

“I want you to go there and hide in the tree top. Wait until morning and follow the path to the next village.” He was having a hard time keeping his voice from breaking at what he knew was coming, “Listen carefully my daughter, you have a twin brother. He and your mother are in a place I can only describe as safe. I don’t know where, there is one who does. It was my task to find her but now you must-“

“Daddy, what are you talking about? I don’t get it. Mommy died. You said so.” Tears fells from my eyes in buckets try as I might to wipe them away with the tiny fists of a six-year-old little girl.

“I- I know honey, I know. But if you find a woman named Genkai, all will be explained. Lyte, Find her. Find Genkai. She will answer your questions and help you save this world, it has always been your destiny, as it has been mine to protect you… I am not your father.”

An explosion occurred not far away. The screams of death and vengeance filled the air and the last thing she remember of that night is the face of the man she had believed until then to be her father as he stood in the doorway of our home, looking back at her before he finally left to fight.

*End Flashback*

By morning the village was destroyed and the demons of Makai finally ruled all they held dear. For nine years this has been the case and for nine years Lyte had evaded or fought every demon she came into contact with, trying to ease the suffering of her kin. As a result she’s gotten quite strong though no one would know it by looking at her.

She doesn’t typically fight with a weapon but that’s not to say that she can’t… Lyte simply choose not to most of the time. She looks like an average girl so most underestimate her. Her black hair still has the white streaks and those are thought to have come from her village itself… she don’t really know why… and it’s cut down to her mid-back but she usually keep it tied back so it looks shorter. Outside the white lines on her head and slightly better than average clothing… she just wash them regularly…she could be mistaken for any other slave. Her attire consists of and dark green long sleeve shirt with a black over shirt that she usually keep unbuttoned, cargo pants that are an even darker shade of green and black shoes. If she masks her energy she can use this to her advantage and move around freely in places where her friends cannot.

Lyte travels with two friends. The first she met shortly after her village was destroyed. Her name is Saiya but Lyte just calls her Sai. She’s two years younger than Lyte at twelve but she’s already a master elementalist. Well… they wouldn’t say “master”… but Sai’s pretty damn close! Her favorites are water and air so naturally they are her strongest followed by fire and then earth. She won’t tell Lyte where she learns it all or where she picked up they staff she carries. Lyte couldn’t for the life of her figure out where she leans this stuff! Sai’s been with her since she was four years old and only knew the basics… then one night she wakes up and knows a new technique and that staff appeared! It creeped Lyte out at first but then she just got used to it.

Her past is shrouded too… she won’t tell anyone where she’s from or who her parents were or even if they’re alive or dead. Lyte doesn’t really mind that a whole lot anymore but it used to irritate her to no end.

Sai’s appearance is a bit unnerving at times. She’s a few inches shorter than Lyte with a slender build like herself but it’s her hair and eyes that get her into trouble. With pure white hair and stormy gray eyes she stands out quite well… not exactly something fugitives want. It’s okay if they’re careful because she has a weird cloak that changes color depending on her surroundings that help her blend in. Underneath it she wears a white sleeveless shirt tucked into black fighting pants that fall over her black shoes.

Lyte’s other friend is a bit of an odd character. About two years ago Saiya and her came across a young man on the side of the road. He was fading fast, his soul was at deaths door. Saiya wanted to help but she was a bit more cautious. The sense Lyte got from him, however faint it was, was that of a demon. Sure he looked human enough but there are those who can pass as human easily. It happened to be one of that type of demon that they was having a hard trouble tracking at the time. Lyte was firmly against it but Saiya’s a great negotiator. One of her ‘talents’ is talking her way into just about anything she wants.

In the end she won and they moved him to the dense forest that lined the road for miles. Upon finding a clearing large enough to lay him out flat Sai got to work trying mend his wounds. They were all battle inflicted and most were fatal when put together.

Two nights past when a thought struck Lyte’s head broadside, “Hey Sai. Since when could you do that level of healing magic?”

She looked at her friend but never wavered in her art, “You know that if I mix water and air properties that I get a healing result.” Lyte nodded, after all… she had been on the receiving and of that same result many times. Sai continued, “What you don’t know is that the speed at which the results work is entirely based on the individual’s will power and severity of the injury. The more severe the injury or weaker the person’s will results in much slower healing. We’re just lucky that you have a very strong will or some of those broken bones and lacerations would have taken a lot longer to heal. Lyte, are you listening to me?!”

“Huh?! Um… I am! Er… was… sorry Sai. You know I have a short attention span.”

“Only when it comes to learning. When you’re fighting it’s like you see everything at the same time. Nothing gets past you.” She said.

“Well that’s because if I miss something it may come back to bite me. Or worse, you! I figure as long as you know what’s going on then I don’t have to worry about it.” she placed her hands behind her head and reclined against a tree trunk and promptly resumed her scan of the forest for anyone who might have picked up Saiya’s energy and wish to investigate.

The next day the stranger awoke. It was nearing the evening so Lyte was out gathering wood for the fire Sai had started. The forest was essentially empty but it still wasn’t safe to go too far so when Saiya’s energy spiked, which was their signal to each other for the other to come back, Lyte was there within seconds. She could say the scene was to be expected. The guy was standing alright but looked as if he was about pass right back out again.

Lyte set the bundle of dry word down without really looking at him, “Put that away. Do you really think we’d heal you if we wanted you dead?” Lyte started feeding the fire attempting to convince the man that she wasn’t paying a whole lot of attention when in reality she was ready to kill him if need be.

He relaxed a little bit but remained on his feet, “Why DID you heal me?”

“Good question… hmmm… It was your idea.” she said to Saiya.

“Huh? Well… yeah… but… we couldn’t just leave you there.”

“Could too, but we didn’t so be grateful.” Lyte looked at him and their eyes locked. He was searching for something but never said what it was. She finally got a good look at him. Big black boots that buckle rather than tie, scuffed up black fighting pants, a loose black long sleeve shirt. The sword looked like it usually stayed at his side. His entire wardrobe looked fit for quick agile movements. Even his black hair that was chopped to his black eyes seemed to move a lot.

He was still weak and it was getting late so they spent another night in the forest. After a lot of convincing he told them his name was Chaos as well as confirming Lyte’s suspicions of him being a demon.

“Why? Do I frighten you?” his eyes narrowed.

“*Yawn* No… not really. We’ve beaten scarier demons than you.” Lyte leaned back against the tree she had deemed hers and placed her hands behind her head determined to get some sleep.

“’Beaten scarier demons’… *gasp* Are you two the ones they call the heroes of the humans? Lyte and Saiya?”

“Yeah… that would be us.” Lyte couldn’t suppress the smirk that played across her face.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you two!”

“So you could claim the bounty on our heads?” Saiya went from cheerful to grave in no time at all… she had never seen her do that so fast before. It wasn’t right.

“No no no! That’s not it at all! I may be a demon but that doesn’t mean I agree with what we’ve done. There’s not very much that I can do on with the way I am now or on my own. Reguardless of how much I hate to admit it. But if I join you then I can easily get stronger and I’ll be able to help you guys out! I know I can.”

His request was a bit too much for them to take in all at once, “That’s a new one. A demon helping the demon killers.” Lyte paused to mull it over in her head.

“You’re a bit of an odd demon, aren’t you?” Saiya’s question startled her more than anything. She usually stayed out of such conversations election to sit back and watch Lyte dig herself into a really deep hole. Lyte thought she was a little sadistic that way… she enjoys her mental torture way too much.

Chaos scratched the side of his face, “I-um… I guess you could say that. I’m an outcast because I sympathize with humans… but I have good reasons. We were all perfectly fine in Makai before that guy showed up. I had my family and we were content with our lives… but then a demon showed up and convinced the three Lords to fight against each other like never before. My mother, father, and my sister were all victims of their war… along with the rest of my area.” his eyes were downcast.

“It must have happened a long time ago for them to go from warring with each other to working together to take over this realm.” Lyte was trying to switch the subjects… with little success.

“But that’s the thing. They aren’t working together. They’re all dead. Lords Yomi, Raizen and Mukuro all died on the same night nine years ago.”

“Red Moon? They died that night?” asked Lyte.

He nodded and they fell quiet. She hadn’t heard of any of that before. As far as they knew the Lords were still sitting on their respective thrones stuffing their faces with human flesh.

After a long moment Chaos broke the silence, “Hey I’ve been wondering. Why hasn’t Reikai done anything to help you guys out?”

“Who’s ‘Reikai’?” Lyte had never heard the name.

“Nothing!” Saiya said quickly, “It’s just an old fairy tale that demons tell their young to scare them into bed.” She eyed Chaos warningly. Lyte never did figured out what that was all about.

That night proved quite fruitful. They let Chaos join them and they learned a bit more of the ruling demon’s well kept secret. One man controlled everything. Not three separate Lords. But their trio was born and that brings them to the present.

Lyte’s 15, Saiya’s 13, and Chaos looks like he’s 16… but he’s a demon so who knows. They keep each other alive and watch each other’s back. Lyte with her hand-to-hand self-taught combat powered by something Chaos called spirit energy… which would make sense because Sai’s always called a certain technique of hers a Spirit Gun… she didn’t tell her why at first… still hasn’t. It come out of her finger like a light blue bullet so at first she thought that was the reason behind the name… but then she wondered if that was the whole reason.

But Saiya has her magic and is their main healer so she stays out of close quarters fighting and sticks with the long-range stuff. With her power over the elements she can bury a fleet of demons within seconds or suffocate them to death. Chaos is an expert swordsman and has been trying to teach Lyte. She’s not very good yet so she doesn’t rely on it much for a victory. He uses his aura to enhance his speed and strengthen his blades edge. He called his red power demon energy, but Lyte’s is spirit energy… he was going to explain the difference but Saiya called him away and he dodged every one of Lyte’s questions about it since.

Other than the intel they got from Chaos when they met nothing really relevant has been brought to their attention. Lyte still hasn’t found the woman her father spoke of or anything relating to the man Chaos said is in control. It seems like nobody knows anything! Now it’s December 18th, one week to Red Moon on the 24th. That is the day she despises and mourns the most. That day was the day her life, and so many others, changed for the worst. She was five at the time so she doesn’t really know what it’s like to be truly free, or what it’s like to live in a world without demons…

So their story truly begins. At tale of the end.
