everyone get a silver membership free as long as you have an internet connection. Gold memberships are only needed to play online (multiplayer or whatever)
you DO NOT need live just to play games

I think i've had it for...three and a half years now? anyway of course you don't need live to play a game, but it sure does make everything a hell of alot better ;P

You definitely need a live account if you want to play your backwards compatible games. I'm going to go and get the emulator for Dead or Alive Ultimate later today, it just got added to the compatibility list ^__^
Plus there are software updates and patches that fix any glitches the game has.
