It's a Dopamine blocker. 3nodding There are three neurotransmitters thought to play big roles in mood disorders (and schizo-disorders): Dopamine, Norephinepherine, and Serotonin. Most anti-depressants today are SSRIs, meaning they block the body's absorption of serotonin. Norephinepherine blockers are used mainly with anxiety disorders comorbid with depression, and dopamine blockers, I believe, are used with stronger manifestations (such as psychosis) and help to stabilize mood.

One of the biggest problems treating mood disorders is how individual it is; one person may have low levels of dopamine and that causes depression, while someone else may be lacking serotonin, or serotonin AND dopamine, or norephinepherine and serotonin...you get the picture. So, my guess is they gave you more than one drug, no? They're probably trying to cover all bases.

Risperdal was the first medication I was given to deal with the bipolarness and was on it for a little more than two years. Over that time I was getting even worse and my dosage was tripled. The lack of stability at the time didn't help matters and my chemical and smokable habits never knew such extremes.

I kept taking my medication because the best advice you can get and live is to stay on the meds no matter what but Risperdal just was not doing it for me. My depression might not have been as deep as I have known it but I was in the lows for months.

About a year ago, I had another doctor prescribe zyprexa for me. Within only a couple of days my mood was brought up and my sleep was better and even my hormones felt a little more balanced. The icing on the cake was that I gained some stability for myself once again and I was really starting to do well with freelancing.

I still have my dark moments sometimes where I feel I must be hurtful and have hurt myself more than anyone ever should. But for the last year everything has been getting better. The only thing that sucks is the chub that I have put on with this medication. People say I am underweight but I feel like I am compelled to feel obsessive about having the body of a dancer or else sometimes I am stupid and think my looks are the only thing guys will love me and want me for.

But lately I have learn to feel beautiful with my thoughts, comfortable with myself, and happier than I have been in years! Even though a lot of things in my life are better than they have been I still think the change in medication made a big difference. I feel like making babies!

I met this great guy who loves and is devoted to me and understands me. I never thought I would meet someone again who would come to mean the world to me. He's bipolar too so he knows what I know. He treats me like an empress! I can trust him intimately more than anyone ever. He loves me enough that every time he is with me he wants to make up for all that pain that made so many scars on me. I have given myself so deeply to anyone and never got much and in way feel innocent again. He's someone I more than want to have a family with....awwwwww! yeah that is how i feel heart rofl heart rofl

All I can say, is if it not working keep trying different meds until you find the right ones and stay on them. Plus, the best medicine sometimes is just cuddling. Everybody needs somebody. Love is a powerful medicine and another one hell of a drug!

Good luck on it all working out and know you'll get through okay hun! wink

Bipolar might be a curse sometimes and the haters and mean girls can really make it a rough time for us mutants. But if you know what joy it is to feel about life and have the perception I do then you know what it is a great blessing and one that I give thanks to the Creator for.

And sometimes all we really need is some:

Peace
Love
Unity
Respect

and yes even shopping! wink

My psych told me that risperdal is normally given to people with ADHD but i'm no doctor, all i know is that when i was on it, i was tired, depressed, couldn't think straight, and almost lost my job because of those side effects. now i know that each drug works differently for every person but after my experience i wouldn't suggest it to bipolar people, but like i said, i'm no doctor, so take what i say with a grain of salt

It's my second medication, and I hate it! I'm up all night.
And it blocks dopamin and seritonine, if you want info, I can find you the link. I just google my meds.

STOP TAKING IT.

Risperdal is AWFUL, not to mention ineffective.

It doesn't help AT ALL. What it DOES do is give you hallucinations like hell and ******** up your mind.

At least that's the experience everyone I know who's taken it has.

Don't take it.

Risperdal is risperidone, what's known as an atypical antipsychotic - basically, it's in a relatively new class of drug that acts in a manner to stabilize your moods and behavior patterns by blocking some of the neurotransmitters in your brain - in Risperdal's case, it's a very, very strong dopamine blocker, and also affects serotonin as well.

"To use a stereo analogy, let's assume all the crap in your head is like having a radio tuned to a station you don't like that's turned up too loud. [...] The antipsychotics work like earplugs, the volume is still turned up, but you can't hear it so it doesn't make a difference."

Risperdal KILLED my sex drive.

Freaky extremely rare side effect: It made my girlfriend's breasts leak. Yeah. They thought it was cancer at first, but after doing a whole bunch of tests, it turned out to be the Risperdal.

I refused to take it anymore, and I couldn't' be better. I guess it's just luck though, it's been almost two months and I haven't had an episode. I have pulled a few all nighters, and been sorta hyper but no serious mania.

No it's more for ADHD, but they were trying it for bipolar, when they were putting me on it they told me it wasn't common meds for bipolar, but they would try it.
