It is acceptable in Esperanto if you cannot quickly make the cirumflex letters to use "x" after the letter. Though Dr. Zimmenhoff originally had it written out to use h.

Like the pop/techno Esperanto group "Dolcxamar" used to spell their name like that, now they have gone very traditionalist and spell it "Dolchamar"

While both methods are correct, I prefer the "x" because it isn't a letter in the Esperanto Alphabet where as "h" is.

Which do you prefer?

X

(ps... I heard a rumout that the HX sound was getting dumped... is this true?)

Well, rumors like that have been around a lot with Esperantist since Dr. Zimmehoff's passing. I hear things like that all the time

"Yeah, they want to add a tx sound, yeah they want to switch the j and jx sounds, yeah, they want to get rid of the -o at the end of singular nouns..."

Those things really haven't stuck. Though that is why Ido branched off from Esperanto. Ido took a lot of those little changes and put them together.

I prefer to use "x," for the reasons you said.

There aren't that many words with ĥ, anyway. I can't even think of one off the top of my head.

Using "h" instead of "x" seems to appeal more to English-speakers, since "ĉ" is represented by the letter combination "ch" in English, for example, which kind of goes against the spirit of Esperanto.

I prefer using x (cx, sx, hx, etc.) , because hh just looks like a typo. confused

I agree with all of you here. I think the x marker should stay. For me, x has always been a letter that I rarely use, and is kinda like "x marks the spot."

Of course, I know languages like French use it more, but it's usually at or near the end of the word. Not many words in many "real" languages start with X because it doesn't have a set sound. Also, it isn't required for any sounds, unlike H, which is used VERY often in many languages.

Wow, major pointless rant there. I just prefer the X. xp

Reviving a rather old thread, I use the FireFox add-on abcTajpu for accented characters. I set it to use the Insert key, so typing c then pressing Insert makes ĉ. Same with the other characters.

I didn't know about this "h" thing... but I think I prefer "x", anyway. 3nodding Things like "jh" will confuse me a bit.

Now I use Ek! It's a program that runs in the background, so it works with Chrome too, and not just Fire Fox. You can use either the X, H, or both, and select if you want u to automatically turn to ŭ in aŭ and eŭ. The program is fully in Esperanto but it's very easy to figure out without any knowledge of the language.

I prefer 'x', when I have to substitute. Typically, though, I'll use a script to make the accent.
