I've been wondering about this myself a lot lately, what makes music "good" or "bad." As for myself, I've come to the conclusion that good music is anything that makes me wanna move. When I'm listening to music, I'm always tapping my foot, singing along, dancing if I can. Bad music is anything really boring.
What do you guys think? What qualities (or lack thereof) makes you like or dislike certain music?

To me, good music is anything that requires some skill/talent to create and something that isn't just inane drivle about how much a guy loves his truck, a la county. I usually try to find things with semi-intricate guitar work, decent vocals and some sort of non-repeditive lyrics expressing some ideal.

What I like really depends on my mood.
If I feel tired/sick/depressed, I find it impossible to listen to anything heavy or fast.
Same goes for if I have energy, I can't listen to slow stuff.
I like music with vocals that don't make my ears bleed.

I like music with vocals that don't make my ears bleed. pretty much the same here, but I listen too fast music when i'm tired to wake my self up and say "dumbass its only 12:00 am."

I think it depends on my mood. I'll wake up some days with a song stuck in my head and end up listening to that style of musi all day. If I wake up early in the morning and have to go out to Uni, I'll listen to something 'soothing' (for want of a better word) like Regina Spektor or Moby, but when Im getting ready to go out and party, it'll probably be Choking Victim or something like that that gets me going. I like a lot of differnt music and there isnt really one thing that unites all of it (I lik simple and complex, electronic and instrumental, fast and slow), so I guess good music to me is something that I hear and get a good vibe from it. If it suits the mood I'm in and makes me feel good, it's good music.

I love wanton music, music that is innovative and new. Chances are if I've heard anything similar to it, I'm not going to give it a chance. That to me is good music.

to me, it's mostly a matter of taste. "Bad" music to me is music that serves no real purpose, other than to entertain.

What qualities (or lack thereof) makes you like or dislike certain music? if im listenin to it and start counting the dots on the cieling bad , if it has a whiny lyrical sound(ie:that crap my sis likes, uh somthin about disco) i cant stand it when a band trys to pull somethin off they cant there will always be exceptions to every rule though. to me i love music that is satirical, makes me think, laugh, challenges my beleifs, or is inexplicably awesome

The problem with people who are into punk music today is that some tend to like certain bands and trash others without regard to whether or not a band's music sounds great, etc. Popularization of punk music in the mainstream world has spawned an elitist view on the music, which has led people to use terms like "real punk" and "fake punk". Furthermore, these days, many punk rockers seem to put image into high priority, and would shape their opinions based on what others think about certain bands for the sake of image. The above-mentioned elitist feeling, for example, would make one dislike Green Day, just because others look at it as being a sellout band; not because one thinks Green Day's music sounds terrible. What's worse is that this negative view on Green Day contributes to the formation of one's opinion that Green Day isn't a punk band at all.

What's worse is that this negative view on Green Day contributes to the formation of one's opinion that Green Day isn't a punk band at all. well "sell out" is a subjective term. i don't consider greenday punk because greenday doesn't fit with my definition of punk. its not because they're popular (if a band becomes popular, it seems that people think they've automatically sold out). hell, the sex pistols have influenced a bunch of people (one of the definitons of popularity is how many people a band has influenced) and i still consider them punk. anyway, back to my view of good and bad music..."good" is whatever *YOU* are in the mood for, bad is whatever you aren't. you can't define good music. you can define bad music as music made by artists who have a complete lack of talent - but talent is subjective. some would say the ramones had no talent. some would say they did have talent. so you can't really define bad music either, other than it's what you don't like, what you aren't in the mood for. example: i used to hate the sex pistols, back when all i listened to was thrash metal. then someone got me into early hardcore punk, which had a huge influence on the thrash bands. from hardcore punk i got into earlier punk, until i found myself listening to the ramones, the clash - and yes, even the pistols. so good and bad is really just what you are in the mood for - what you are capable of appreciating at a specific moment in time. "good" and "bad" has nothing to do with talent - dream theater is more musically talented than the ramones, but i prefer the ramones to those prog-metal wankers.
