So, I was wondering what everyone's top three favourite genres of metal are? Mine would be, in this order

Folk
Power
Prog

Doom comes close but those are my favourite three.

How about we throw some band examples in there too? The focus of this thread should remain *genre* rather than specific bands, but mentioning a few bands under each genre might help people define their tastes a little better. Also, maybe adding why you like each genre could help too.

My top 3 are...

Progressive metal - Prog metal is the genre I've gotten into most recently, but I gotta say, it satisfies something I've searched for in music for a long time. Technical ability combined with a sense of melody and an exploration of the boundaries of music (rather than conforming to a particular style slavishly), these are the things I like most about prog. 3nodding
Example bands - Symphony X, Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater

Power Metal - Because I'm a total geek (read anime, dungeons and dragons, etc etc), power metal appeals to that part of me I suppose. On a lyrical level, songs about slaying dragons, war, honour and glory and all that jazz (not to say all power metal bands sing about such themes!). On a musical level, the soaring vocals, emphasis on melody (more 'overt' melodies than those found in prog) and inspirational musical passages.
Example Bands - Gamma Ray, Blind Guardian, Angra

Thrash Metal - Ah, my first genre of metal. Thrash combines the attitude of punk with the harsh musical edge of older NWOBHM bands into something that just makes me want to headbang. I like the speed, cynical outlook and emphasis on riffage these bands offer.
Example bands - The big 4 (you really ought to know what bands I mean if you're in this guild wink )

Honourable mentions go to Technical Death and Melodic Death...

Hmm...I would say:

Ministry and Fear Factory
Black
Dimmu Borgir
Progressive
Opeth
But those aren't the only bands I like from those genres. Just my favorites. xp
