The house of the Mage Abhorsen is situated about 60 miles inside the Old Kingdom, located on an island in the bend of the River Ratterlin, which is a good defense against Dead creatures, and can only be reached by stepping stones - which are frighteningly dangerous to cross. It has long been the residence of Abhorsens and Abhorsens-in-waiting. While they are there, they are waited upon by a series of Charter-sendings which take care of virtually every need. In times of distress, the Abhorsen may call upon a great flood from upriver to charge downstream. This is a great weapon against Dead who may attempt to cross the river, as they did in the time of the Abhorsen Sabriel. There is a Paperwing, a gift from the Clayr, on the roof for a quick escape.

AREAS
The Dining Room - Where the Abhorsen dines. The Charter-sendings will not serve dinner until the Abhorsen is seated. It contains a long, dark wooden table and hanging tapestries.

The Roof Gardens - a pair of small terrace gardens. I believe you can also have lunch here.

The Ice Grotto - an underground cave where the Abhorsen performs the ritual that calls the flood. In the center of the room, there is a Charter-spelled block of ice. The Abhorsen must place his or her hands upon this and speak the incantation, "The Abhorsen pays his/her respects to the Clayr and requests the gift of water." It takes about 24 hours for the flood to arrive.

The Library - containing thousands of volumes on necromancy, Charter magic and Free Magic. It is the largest room in the House.

The Deepest Cellar - the very deepest part of the House where the Greater Dead creature Kerrigor is sealed in the form of a black cat by the bells Ranna and Saraneth, along with every Charter mark of ward and guard known to Abhorsen Sabriel and King Touchstone I.

The Rose Garden - a lovely scenic garden containing a very deep well.

The Well - In the Rose Garden, there is a deep well. A ladder goes down into the earth. All the way down, there are two bronze doors that can be unlocked only by the breath of an Abhorsen, or at least, someone related to one. Within, there is a place where the border between Life and Death blur. An avatar of Astarael the Sorrowful sometimes appears here. There is a passage herein that leads to a secret exit near the falls.

The Oak Grove - a grove of trees to the south of the island.

The Paperwing Platform - where the Paperwing - a Charter-spelled light aeroplane - is kept and launched.

The Tower - a tower that goes 5 storeys up and contains the Abhorsen's study, reading room, parlours (upper and lower) and observatory.
