Note: You can perform this ritual every day if you like. It doesn't matter. Also, this is a completely legal recovery process and the link is listed in the second post of the Gaia Problems Sticky in the Questions and Assistance forum.
1. Click this link. It will open a new window.

2. In the window that opened go to My Gaia>My Stuff and wait for your inventory to load.
3. Scan inventory for boxes/trunks.
4. Click on said boxes/trunks one at a time. (You do not have to open them.) This "sets" the rare in your inventory, kindof like a save.
5. Open/Sell/Enjoy your recovered rares as you see fit. heart

(I've actually recovered at least a half dozen additional rares this way but these are the most recent and thusly, the ones I haven't lost the slip of notepaper for.)

Like.. if you missed clicking on the rare or that you click it and it doesn't appear in your inventory? 0__o But then how could you click it in your inventory if it doesn't make it there...

No, you just click that link to see if you got a rare that didn't light up the ! For months after the new navigation system was introduced (and a month or two before) rare events were just not showing up. No flying box, no link, no eek . Thus, the fallback link.
Actually I think the whole process is outdated now. *checks up on that.*
Update: This appears to still be an ongoing issue. At least the link system is still listed as a workaround.
