Lately I've been thinking about the age old question: Are humans generally good or bad creatures? Are they neither good nor bad? Does it depend on the individual?
I certainly believe that all people are capable of good and bad. I am also certain that everybody will do both good and bad. When we're born we are selfish with our needs and lack of feeling for others but is that really bad? We don't know any better. Are people born blank slates? It seems that people will chose bad over good if bad suits their needs. I guess I've come to the conclusion that it's our choices and experinces that make us who we are. Therefore it's up to the individual not nature to decide to be good or bad.

I believe the same thing. It's incredibly short-sighted of people to say that people are the way they are because of how they're raised. I think everyone chooses what they are. If you're racist, it's your fault, not your parents. If you're a punk, you can be damn sure nobody else made that choice for you.

Humans to my mind at least are a force of pure evil. We waste and abuse the limited resources granted us and then complain that there's nothing left to use. We kill, rend and slaughter eachother just because of minor variations in belief. There is currently no redeeming value to the human race from nature's perspective, nor from mine.

Damn... I know I should know those names... but the only thing I can think of is with Locke is how Peter Wiggin used that name as an alias in Ender's Game. His sister used the pseudonym Demosthenes. Or was it the other way around...

hmmm... (*taps head*) i think that when we're born, we are born without knowing the difference between good or bad. but as we grow older, our own conscious makes us more aware of whats what. but, that doesn't mean that it would stop people from doing bad things. sure it depends on them, but its also influenced by the people and events that are going on around them.

newatreides Damn... I know I should know those names... but the only thing I can think of is with Locke is how Peter Wiggin used that name as an alias in Ender's Game. John Locke and Charles (I think that was his first name) Hobbes were two sociologist that came out of England around the time of the Enlightenment period. Locke believe that all humans have an inherantly good and respectful nature whereas Hobbes believed the opposite, and that all humans were naturally greedy and selfish to an extent.

I believe humans are good creatures as long as they do what's right, and think for themselves.

There is no such thing as "good and evil", what happens was meant to happen.
Thinking o a lower level, I would say that there is only right and wrong as perceived by an individual.
