College tech is so different! They slit it into so many little parts and I can only be assigned to one! They chucked me into shop and stage construction. I just don't know if I can get the same feel for the stage as I did in highschool. crying

Oh, I'm so sorry! I hear that transition is horrible.

But stage and shop construction can be really fun! My highschool builds it's own sets...because we're too poor to do otherwise. But I enjoy it.

Go in with a positive attitude about it and just try and have fun! Maybe it's not your niche, but if you don't really give it a try, then you'll never know.

Lame.... I'm a senior in high school and I'm applying as a lighting designer. Stage build is just... not my thing. I can do it, but power tools are not my specialty. Not at all.

If specialization bothers you that much you should probably stick to community theatre. At my school at least you can try different things to find what you like but in the end and in professional theatre you need to be specialized.

At my school everyone does crew in their first year. In real life the scenery isn't built by the people who run the show. How do you work the set? Someone teaches you. I think its good that actors even take that small part backstage I know alot who say being there made them appreciate techies more.

They should appreciate us without getting in our way. and maybe since i have been building my own sets for fours years as i work the show. i think that way works better

It's collaborative art and places vary, deal with it. You need to go to a shop where all you do is build sets for huge shows like in NY. Or you need a really small theatre.
