The link above goes to a very interesting article. In short it states that democrats in the house of representatives are planning to introduce a bill seeking to limit the number of abortion by putting an emphasis on pregnancy prevention. So far many pro-life groups have opposed the idea because the emphasis on contraception. What do you guys think?

I'd have to agree. Emphasising crontraception in the past has never worked. It could be said its made things worse (And I perosnly beleive it does, and I have reasons for this) but I can't make any sound judgments untill I've seen studies and numbers. Emphasising abstinence dosn't work either. Their needs to be a balanced, plus part explaing that sex is NOT a casual thing to be done when ever you like.

There needs to be taught a sense of responsibility. This attitude of "well you're gonna do it anyway" is not healthy. It's as if you are expected to have sex.

And I do think this influence is actually pretty strong because I'm a product of the same process only in the opposite direction. I was expected to remain abstinate and seek other things in a relationship besides sex and it certainly DID work because I've been practicing abstinence even after growing out of my "sex is icky" phase. I can't relate to nymphomaniacs at all. For me the whole "no-sex" thing has been rather easy. It got harder over time I admit but relatively speaking I can't say it's difficult. Just keep your pants on. It take no more effort than that.

But if you've done it a first time, it probably is very very difficult to go back to being abstinent.

I guess I really don't have no issues with the emphasis on abstinence. I'm not miserable. I'm not repressed. I'm not pregnant. I'm not dieseased and I'm not regretting anything.

Exactly, a stronger enphasis on responsibility. These kids are taught about sex, that it leads to pregnancy, that contreceptives can prevent (not stop) pregnency, and that abstinence is th ebest way to not get/get some one pregnant, but they arn't really taught to effectivly apply these teaching and be responsible.

Birth control all the way. The only problem with that is, people don't know how the ******** to listen. No seriously. I've gotten in arguements with people who have the same education on birth control as me, and who believe that Depo Provera is 100% effective.

We've been learning about this s**t since I was 10, get the hint already people.

Also there should always be the disclaimer that the only thing 100% effective against pregnancy is abstinence. You don't have to CHOOSE abstinence (I know that I didn't) however part of learning about how to prevent pregnancy is getting the fact that no matter how much birth control you use it's NEVER 100% effective.

And what of responcibility?

And what of responcibility?

Responsibility IS having safe sex. They can't teach not to have an abortion because it's legal to obtain one, so the most responsibility one can teach is to protect yourself as much as possible. After that it depends more on a person's character and beliefs than the school system.

Like I said, I recieved the same schooling as many other people however I still do things different than them. Some of them are virgins, some of them sleep with whatever moves, some of them have only had sex with one person, some of them have a child and some of them would have had one had they kept it.

Wow, seriously man you have to read everything that I write. Where in what I wrote did I say that people should be handing out condoms and birth control? I mentioned TEACHING many a time.

"Heres a pill/condom, go have some fun" IS what they are basicly being taught. Responcibility can only be taught once somethign is taught as being important. We live in scociety were "normal" people see sex as just another activity to do with some one you think you really really like. The only way I see people tackign the idea of sex and contraceptive serious is once we again teach that sex is very serious, and not just another activity in life.

Teaching the effectiveness of birth control is part of sex education (if you go to Catholic school, then the teachings about birth control are also included, and for good reason). But they need to emphasize that sex is a Big Deal. Instead, the far-far-left groups are trying to get sex ed. introduced into kindergarten where they ask such casual questions as, "What is your ideal romantic scenario for having sex? With whom? Why?" *dies* burning_eyes

What. The. ********.

SRSLY.

What the FLIPPING ********> are they thinking?!

WTF is more important, reducing the number of abortions or preventing kids from having SAFE sex!?! When the ******** will they learn that they are NOT going to stop people from having sex outside of marriage or casual sex or whatever?? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. People will either have unsafe sex or they will have safe sex. They're stupid and selfish and abstinence is out of the question for them. And if you don't teach them about SAFE sex, they'll just have UNSAFE sex and get pregnant and have abortions. WAY TO ******** GO. Are you against abortion, or are you against sex, hm? You are NOT going to stop people from having sex. You LOST that battle. GIVE IT UP.

God, I seriously want to slap the s**t out of these people. They're part of the problem, in fact, they're a huge part of the reason why abortion rates are so high.

Bullshit. Period.

Sex IS just another activity in life. Your perception of it makes it important or not. Infact I find cuddling and kissing much more intimate than having sex. I have a friend who has had sex with more people than he's kissed because he, like me, finds kissing more intimate.

What you're talking about teaching is an ideal and your belief. I don't find sex serious at all, I think the concequences associated with it are serious but the act itself is simply that, an act.

I believe that sex is what you make it.

For example: Pyro evidently sees sex as something extremely serious, and something that is only to be shared with romantic thoughts in mind. Beware sees sex as an everyday act that has lesser meaning than, as she said, kissing/cudding.

Sex is very, very subjective. It's something that changes in definition, in meaning, and rules/regulations as you go from person to person.

I'm personally choosing to abstain until marriage, because of religious reasons, as well as the fact that I have chosen, for myself, to abstain until I am ready to have children. I'm not saying that I'm going to try to conceive the first time. I just want to be secure, and know that the moment I take off my pants, I'm ready to bond eternally with this person and bear children with him.

This is what I made sex into. I can't expect the rest of America to agree with me.

Which is why I strongly stand for teaching the positive affects of abstinence, but also teaching kids about contraception and how to use it correctly, just in case.

Because sometimes, teens don't rebel against their parents with loud music or black clothing or crocodile tears. Some teens rebel against their parents by having sex against their parents' will. (No, not bullshitting you. I know several people who have done this.)

If they've been told that abstinence is the only way to go, they're going to rebel against that. If they've been brainwashed into thinking that contraception never works, they're going to have unsafe sex.

And the more this happens, more teenage girls wind up pregnant. The more pregnancies, the more abortions. The more abortions, the more our society crumbles beneath us.

We can't expect everyone to follow our personal beliefs. But what we can do is teach younger people about contraception (abstinence included as the only 100% effective form), about what abortion really is, and how we can help them should pregnancy strike.

No - what kids are being taught is "no birth control is 100% effective, so don't have sex". I was taught abstinance only sex-ed and a chick dropped out of my 8th grade class because she got pregnant, and didn't even know that using birth control could help prevent pregnancy.

I think that abstinance should be stressed, but that many teens are going to have sex with or without proper education about birth control, and so they might as well know how to protect themselves.

And not all people believe that sex is more than another natural activity. Shouldn't judgements like that be left up to parents to teach their children, rather than schools and teachers?
