I read this book and was dissapointed:
I didn’t hate this book but was pretty disapointed with it. The Soulforge.

Personally I only dislike one part, but disagreed with several facts.

I was thoroughly disapointed by the fact that since it was written by Magaret Weis, it was inconsistent with the facts that were stated in Chronicles and Legends.

Raistlin was eight when he begin Mage school.
SoulForge said six, but that was all cool.

In chronicles they say that at the fair he watched the illusionist all day and then he performed tricks that he learned from the illusionist that night. That made me think that he was casting illusionist spells as well as performing sleight-of-hand. But maybe my interpertation is just off.

But in Soulforge he couldn’t cast a spell until he was sixteen! (WTF is that?!!!)

Kitiara and Both twins should have interacted more in SF. They were supposed to have been close. Kit had raised them afterall.

I think it was too much narration and not enough conversation between the characters in Soulforge. The longest dialouge was chapter two, Antimodes and Par Salian and no one cares too much about them anyway. For example, they say Kit and Caramon argued about whether Raistlin would board or commute to mage school but dont tell us even one exchange between them. They say that Kit told Caramon stories all morning when Raistlin is in the room sick, but they dont tell any of the stories.

In DoWN Raistlin says to Laurana: That there parents died when they were teenagers, and after that Kit took them with her and That was where He and Caramon learned to fight combining magic and steel. Not once in Sf did Raistlin and Caramon fight side by side. Not once.

It was dumb that Raistlin and Caramon didn’t meet Flint until they were 18. I thought that in Chronicles Strum was 29 while the twins were 26, putting a 3 year difference in their ages, but in SF Caramon gives his age as 18 and Sturm says 20. But then again I suppose that it depends on when Sturm is born, if he is born in Autumn or winter then yes, he could’ve been twenty but SF tells us the twins were born in summer. So does anyone have Sturm Brightblades birthday.

Also Sturms mother dies when he is over twenty in SF but in DoAT they say she died when he was in his early teens and was then unofficially adopted by flint and Tanis as they had unofficially adopted the twins…

I felt they should’ve meet Tanis and Flint at like 13 or 14, since in DoAT they tell us they’d been unofficially adopted. I dont know why Magaret Weis did that but…I was throughly disapointed.
I think that the whole Widow Judith riot murder thing was kinda dumb…Kit shouldn’t have been trying to let Raistlin die in SoulForge, but she was right to say that he was dangerous, like a viper-as long as he’s charmed he’ll be nice. But if you cross him…

Any way, typing this has helped me to realize that I was really upset about this book and am thinking about doing a re-write in Fanfiction. Let me know what you think.

Any comments?

Okay, correct me if I'm wrong (it's been a while since when I read Soulforge), but:

1. Strangely enough...I was under the impression that Maraget Weis created Raistlin. Therefore, what she said goes, right?

2. It said in the beginning of Soulforge, before the actual story about Raist, that this is written from Caramon's point of view to streighten out a few facts that were...not so accurately stated in the Chronicles. It said that he's writting this now in memory of Raistlin so that people would know the true story, not the rumors and legends they heard.

That's why there are contradictions. Personally, I think Soulforge is the more accurate version, but that's just my opinion.

And to answer as to why Raistlin could perform Waylan's sleight of hand tricks after seeing them once is because there was no real magic involved. Sleight of hand involves Dexterity, not real illusion. It was what sparked his interest, not his knowlege of magic.

Right and Wrong. Yeah, she created him in the literate since, she claimed him as her own character the moment she saw his game profile for the table top game. But since she was also the one who wrote for Raistlin in the Chronicles and Legends then she should have made the ends meet.

I read the foreward from Caramon but still, the ends should have met. I am saying that in Chronicles they made it seem as though when the twins parents died Tanis and Flint became unofficial guardians of the twins, watched out for them. But in the Soulforge, they didn't meet Flint, in the personal get to know you since, until they eighteen!

I was also looking forward to reading about their first trip with Kitiara right after their parents death. It did'nt happen.
I was looking forward to reading about the boating incident. Didn't happen satisfactorily
I was looking forward to Raistlin having a better duel during his test, that didn't happen either.

SF was a great book and I liked it, but the fact that the original writer would omit so much from a much loved characters past after summarizing it in other text was a bit...(this sounds fanatical but,) Depressing.

But By the Way Brothers in Arms=AWESOMEST OF THE AWESOME!!!!!!! dramallama dramallama dramallama dramallama dramallama dramallama

I have to say that I agree with alot od what you've said. I liked the books too, but I agree they should have been more accurate.

I loved the Soulforge, but I did notice those things too while I was reading, and while that thing at the end of Brothers in Arms kinda explained the contridections, it could have been a little more accurate. I still think it pwned though. Although Brothers in Arms pwned more! mrgreen
