Well, I have no problem with funny roadrunner type violence in video games. Sponge Bob, Sly Cooper, or Godzilla are humerous and not what I would call, blood & guts. These are funny and active games that are not mean natured or visciously cruel in intent. War games that are strategy and have moral values built into the scenario, Good versus Evil battling it out til the death; these are examples of violence that I find acceptable. People running down hallways and just killing everything they see or going into arenas to pull hearts out of their opponents bodies; these are the type of games with gratuitous violence that deadens the morality of the player's soul. Familiarity with violence can lead to an acceptance of the activity.

Violence in games has taken it's step foward. It's definetly more graphic, and real looking. Games like that i think most likely affect the little children of today.
That's why every once in a blue moon, you hear of a little kid imitating a character off a game they played and either, seriuosly hurting someone, or even killing someone

violence in video games is not the issue. its the parents who buy adult rated games for their young kids, and/or allow them to play such games.

That is a big part of the problem...many parents just see that it is top rated and buy it and never check to see what it is about or watch the kid play it! eek

I don't think that there's anything wrong with violence in video games. All games are targeted for a specific audience. Games that have violence and gore (Devil May Cry, Silent Hill, etc.) are usually targeted for older teens and adults. If kids want to take the risk by not asking their parents and playing a certain video game, then that's their problem. And it's their parents problem for not supervising what their children are playing. There's no need to blame it on the makers of the games.

terrible isn't it sad i know of parents letting 4 year olds play GTA. seriously.

i've even taken it upon myself to tell certain adults (the ones with the ubiquitous whining child going "i want that one" running round after them) that the game their child just sold is aimed at adults and contains explicit violence etc, in it.

the usual response is either a weird look or a lecture about how they know whats best for their children. not if you're buying them that, you don't *sigh*

I think that violence in videogames has... gotten a little too graphic- even for my tastes. 5 years ago, there was a video game where the advertisements and reviews said "You can rip the legs off your enemies and use them as weapons against other enemies."

It wasn't a "comedy" type game, it was a horror, four-player-beat-em-up type game. I don't remember what the name of it was, but I guess it didn't do too well.

HOWEVER, that being said, I think that... the people who play these games.. should have the moral and mental fortitude TO play these games.

You'd think that Sonic the Hedgehog and his pals and their games would be okay for kids of all ages, right? Wrong. My brothers recieved Shadow the Hedgehog for Christmas, and have been playing it a lot recently. My 3 year old son wanted to try it, and after about 10 minutes, he started repeating the curse words the main character was spouting. That's when we said "This Game Is Banned."

However, though I doubt repeating what happens in video games happens a lot in people over thirteen, there are still a few rare apples who might not quite get it. Say... A couple of young adults play GTA.. they get high and decide "heyyyy! Let's steal some cars!"
They'll be inebriated and will be trying to emulate a video game. Which could cause a seriously dangerous situation. Even if they were old enough to get the game, it's dangerous.

The whole argument about parents...
I totally agree. Parents should PAY ATTENTION to the games they buy for their children. I've heard many stories, not only from my husband, but from many friends of mine as well, about parents buying something, and coming back later that day- yelling at the employees because the object they bought had "adult material" (or something similiar) in it. And the employees go "You bought it. It says so right there. Stop yelling at us."

Even if parents buy the games for themselves, and not their children, when they're done... if its a game that their children may not comprehend "Oh this is fake. It'll never happen in real life. Etc., etc.", or if its a game that has content they simply don't what the children seeing, then they should be putting it up high out of the children's reach, and invoke stiff penalities on the child if they decide to "try it out."

You'd teach your kid to drive, right? Teach them about sex and the safest way to go about it, right? You'd explain to your child about death and life, and why they exist, right? For all of these situations, you don't want them jumping in headfirst, without parental guidance. You would want to make sure they understood the intracies, why it can be a difficult subject for them to master all by themselves, and so on and so forth. Television and video games fall under these exact same categories- no matter how violent it is, but even moreso if there are graphic displays of violence and gore and things that... most people probably shouldn't see in their lifetime.

I agree with su, in that some violence is okay. ^^;; I am one of those people who like violence in a game and like watching the blood and gore. And at times, it can make the game seem more realistic.

However, games like GTA and such, I really don't care for, and I find them unessicary, as the whole most of the game seems to center around violence, and hurting people, or breaking the law. >>;; I never really did understand the point of the game, come to think of it.

And yes, parents really should watch what their kids are playing. And watching, for that matter. Little kids shouldn't be palying R rated games, and to many parents let them.

Well I think yes they are violent, but I like violent. When there is no blood when someone dies in a video game it pretty much sucks. And without violence there would be no blood. And another thing it's not really life imitating videogames, it's videogames imitating life. If you notice there was violence long before videogames so you can't really say that the violence in the world is a result of T.V. or videogames. Videogames and T.V are a result of violent life. I mean where do you think they get their ideas from to make them?

video games can make kids anti-social, cause their interaction with pp goes down, even if they have friends. Its what they do when theyre at home bored.

I believe violence in video games is completely acceptable. Well, most of it anyways there are exceptions. For example Man Hunt, that game was over violent. But I believe that other games such as Halo 2 or other first person shooters that are just covered in violence are completely fine. The reason why I believe this is because, games are rated according to their content, if one follows the content rating they can lead themselves into blood and gore or take themselves out of it. This is why I see it is completely acceptable, people should be paying attention to the rating espically parents of young children who aren't paying attention. A prime example is when Bungie first released Halo 2 they got a complaint from a parent saying that a woman caught her son playing Halo 2 on xbox live and was being exposed to violence, cursing, and other non appropriate things. The child was 12, Bungie simply replied with "Why is your son playing a Mature rated game?" I don't believe they got a response back. This is why I believe that most amounts of violence are accetable because they are controlled by ratings. It's just wheather or not the person who is buying the game, pays attention to the rating.

I believe Kids acting out Violence Have mental issues such as divorced parents who don't give a crap and just dump on them or kids who are abused....Video games are just an excuse for the real problem.

I find that video game violence is fine.
It is the parents’ responsibility to take care of their
kid and watch out for them. If their kid does something
stupid, like any violence, they blame it on video games
not their parenting. And if you kid is that vulnerable to
copy video games they don't need to be playing video games!

It doesn't take very much to push some kids over the edge. There was a movie on recently about some guys who were involved in some video game that influenced them to shoot up a mall. This sort of thing has been happening more often these days. It's very easy to be drawn to our darker natures, even without exposure to certain video games.
