I'm black and a guy, but yet I don't dress like a thug and I like anime and such. AND I don't like to say the N word, I appoint it as degrading gasp eh? [lol] any comments? stories? ideas? on this I, personally, feel that doing anything degrading to another person is wrong--whether by word or action. Treat people like you want to be treated and a smile will go along way! Stereotypes are just that putting someone in a box--and a box is always a trap. Open minds, open hearts are the best approach to life and getting along with people. Calling people derogatory names is not productive or proactive, in any situation. Stereotypes are not just about race, they are about age, sex, sexual persuasion, fat, skinny, crippled, retarded...all kinds of ideas can be presented badly... if the wrong word is used. su

My own daughter (adopted) had trouble in school, because she is Korean. In Texas, there were a lot of problems going on with the shrimpers(most of whom were Vietnamese). She got called down by one of the boys in her class; he called her a gook and told her to go home to Viet Nam. The teacher did nothing about it!
I talked to my daughter (she was extremely upset) about her own actions. She was most upset, because she did nothing and said nothing back to the boy. I told her to go back to her class and tell her class how she felt about the incident.
She went the next day and told the class that she was an American...she did not speak anything but English...and that they had really hurt her feelings by acting the way they did. She said that she belonged here just like they did. Just like their parents, wherever they came from in the world...they were all Americans, now! She stood up for herself; she did not get angry she just spoke calmly and had her say. She made new friends that day. She proved to herself that she and her feeling were important and she did not back down. Both the teacher and the boy apologized to her... I guess that is a happy ending! heart

everyone categorises people because it makes them easier to deal with, which i believe is why people tend not to like me too much, cos i don't really fit into any of their nice, neat little boxes and they don't know and/or can't predict how i will behave or how they should behave towards me.
if someone feels the need to put someone down for any reason (whatever niche group you're part of being "wrong" to them) its often because that person has some sort of inadequacy that they're desperately trying to cover up, either consciously or unconsciously. either that or they've been dragged along into it by other people who are. i find remembering that a useful way to deal with these people.

...... Damn steorotypes. Why must everyone use them? They take a model of one person, then try to make everyone fit into that standard..... how can that even be possible? i mean, everyone's different, how can they all be the same in someone's eyes....?
.... It seems everyone tries to fit me in either the lesibian or anime freak standard. *What?! I wear baggy shirts and no makeup!? She must be gay!* ....or.... *! She likes FMA! She has to be one of those freaks that don't bathe and watch anime night and day, in japanese with no subtitles!*
Ugh.... people piss me off.

Sterotypes miff me off. I'm a goth so naturally every one assumes I'm perpetually depressed and miserable. That is not true. People call me a satanist, and hurl bible verses at me, again i'm no satanist, just a simple pagan and proud to be pagan. Being a goth I can't enjoy a cup of coffee without being called an addict or an insomniac.
I'm somewhat larger than the 'average' woman and I get the mick ripped out of me and people assuming this that and the other about me but hey I like being large and curvy, I'd rather that than look like a bean pole on legs lol. Anyway I hate being sterotyped and I dislike sterotyping but I do hold up my hand and admit to it.

I try hard not to stereotype other people, but I will also say that I have been known to do so. I honestly haven't met a person yet who doesn't do some stereotyping on some level, whether it be conscious or unconscious.

The sad thing is that categorizing will never end. I've been heavily categorized and it hurts, but it can't be helped. At least I don't think it can be.

I dislike stereotyping and find that it shows which people are ignorant and narrow minded.
My story...well one of them... No one believes I'm hispanic because I'm white and don't really look it. Mexicans are not the only hispanics, and there are mexicans/hispanics who are white and BLONDE (I'm not, my cousin is). People forget cubans and spaniards are hispanic...they think it's only mexicans -_-;;;.

About the Bible verse part, I had something like that happen my freshman year. I went to church one week wearing all black and they said I was going to hell. Bulls**t.

Pardon me, but didn't you just sterotype "fundies"? I am now a christian, but i was pagan for many years. I'm sorry, but hate is hate no matter where it comes from. We are formed by our belief system. Most people don't understand why we step outside the boxes we were raised in. I don't believe in good or evil...just perspective. There are no sterotypes or labels...just different boxes.
