Xanta woke up the next morning, streching out. She felt odd, and looked at her reflection in the lake. She was a bit bigger, not by much, but she was on her way to adult hood!
She pawed her reflectioned, watching it dance in the ripples. She put her head down low, and slowly walked along the path from the feild to the water, her mucles tense. She was a bit bigger, but that wouldn't change her personality.
Domino steadied himself at the bank of the lake, peering into the eyes of a small fish. He perched on a rock, a bit uneasy about the concept, and swatted at it, his new larger paws feeling awkward and heavy.
He gave up on fishing. Plodding back to his small sleeping area, he curled up on a bed of straw and leaves. It was slightly inside a cave, protecting him from the wind and the rain he could smell in the air.
Xanta looked up at the grey sky, overcast with heavy, formitable looking clouds. She whimpered, and began looking for a place to hide from the rain. She saw in the distance a cave, and began going to it. "Hello?" she asked timidly, not wanting to disturb anything that might be mean in it ."I am coming in...ok?" she added, taking a step into the cave, hopeing nothing was in it.
Domino laughed a bit. "Fine with me, Xanta," he said, appearing from behind a corner in the cave. "Remember me, from when we were pups?"
Xanta yelped from surprise at the sight of domino, but then quickly calmed. Domino was the first and basically only dog to make an effort with her, so she always felt more calm around him "Of course i remember you domino!" she said with a smile "How are you?" she asked
He laughed again and licked her cheek, like he had as a pup. "I'm doing well, as you can most likely see," he joked, motioning towards his meager home. "What about you?"
Xanta smiled, licking him back "Same old same old. I am still a phsyco..."she said, embaressed to admit it. But she trusted domino. She felt a heavy drop of rain hit her nose, and she yelped from surprise, then was embaressed instantly after she processed what had happened. She put her tail between her legs "Lets go inside" she said.
"Yeah, good idea," Domino said, leading Xanta into where he slept. "Being a psycho isn't all that bad," he said, preparing a nice place for Xanta from leftover materials. "At least then the people know why you're living in a cave!" He joked about a bit more, then turned serious. "I want to ask you something. What was the mill like? You don't have to tell me, but I'm all ears if you do want to tell me."
Xanta laughed nervously at his jokes, and sat down. "it...wasnt fun. They barely ever fed us...and all the dogs were angry. I had to live in a small cage with my brothers and sisters and my mom. The worst part was the smell though...it smelled like sick and fecal matter. My mom smelled realy sick...alot of her fur was gone, and bright pink spots where it shoudl be..." Xanta wimpered, turning away, and curling into a ball.
Domino walked over to her and licked her face again. "I'm sorry for bringing it up," he said softly. "It's over now, that'll never happen again."
"No its ok..." said Xanta softly "If i keep ignoring it, I will only get worst" she added, getting up "yea...over now..." she said... pacing in a circle.
Domino left her there to pace for a moment, and went outside into the pouring rain to raid a garbage can. He found one almost immediately; his owner had obviously thrown away a perfectly good sandwich for him.
He brought it back inside and dropped it in front of Xanta.
Xanta smiled at domino "thanks...you are way to nice to me" she said softly, and rummaged through the garbage until she found pizza crusts and began to chew on them. "Why are you so nice to me? I am such a...burden" she said sadly.
Domino smiled and lay down on his warm bed. "You are most certainly not a burden! You're a great companion!" He laughed a bit. "Every dog has his or her own little quirks and shtuff. Yours is just that you're a bit skittish. But that doesn't matter!"
Xanta smiled, finding another pizza crust and tossed it to him. It began to rain harder outside, and soon a bolt of lightening shone through the sky, followed by a loud boom of thunder. Xanta yelped, running to the back of the cave, pressing herback against the wall, eyes wide and fur up. Add thunder to the list of things she was afraid off.
Domino nibbled at the pizza crust and walked back towards Xanta. "No need to worry," he said calmly. "Thunder and lightening cannot hurt us in here. We're protected from the elements," he said, smiling.
Xanta laughed nervously, sinking onto the floor in embaressment. She realy hated being so skittish. But what was she supost to do? It wasn't her fault... "Yea..I know...I'm just..." thunder cracked again, and she couldn't help but yelp. She tried to calm herself, breaking heavily, her mucles tense. At least this time she stood her ground.

Domino laughed a little bit, but thought it rude, so he stopped. "Maybe if I go out in the rain you'd feel better about it!" he suggested. "I mean, it's really hot in here, and some nice cold rain might feel good on my fur."

Xanta peered outside, watching the rain pound down. She had never been out in the rain before. In the puppy mill, she never got out, and when she was Pandy, it hadn't really rained. Just some passing showers, and then she didn't want to, or have to go out.
"I...guess" she said nervously. She would follow domino anywhere really, it was only with him that she ever felt safe.

Domino hopped outside into the rain, the black sky behind him making the lighening and the green trees stand out. He danced around in the rain, the droplets soaking into his fur and pouring out on the ground.
"Come on!" he called out to Xanta, laughing. "This is great!"

Xanta took a deep breath. It did look like fun. And being alone in this cave was rather creepy. She slowly walked forward. She put her paw out into the rain, and the odd sensation of having it pooring down on her made her jump and shrink back.
This would need a running start. She backed up, and began to run, breaking the barrier between saftey and uncertainty, she was in the rain. For a moment she enjoyed it, running through the rain. Then she realized that she probubly shouldn't be running randomly forward with her eyes closed. She opened her eyes, and saw domino in front of her. She tried to stop, but the ground was muddy and slippery, and she found herself sliding into him, and they both feel to the ground, getting covered in mud.
Xanta's eyes widdened, and she began to back away. "I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry!" she said in a hurried, terrified voice. "Please don't hurt me please I didn't mean to i am so sorry.." she was just short of screaming, her eyes closed tight, her whole body quivering.

Domino shook himself off and chuckled, getting a chunk of mud on his paw and tossing it at Xanta's butt. "No worries, m'dearie!" he said happily. "A good ol' mud fight never killed no one!" He dove head-first into the mud, his tail wagging so fast that he thought it was going to fall off.

Xanta took another deep breath. He was ok with it... it was just an...accident. She laughed nervously, making herself let her gaurd down again. "Yea..." she said, once again embaressed. She could never do anything right.
She looked down at the mud. "Mud...fight?" she asked, rather confused. She wanted to have fun like normal dogs. She turned around, and kicked up some mud over at domino, and little specks of it rained down on him. She was nervous that he would be angry, but she wanted to play so badly.

Domino quirked his brow. "Is that the best you can do?" He desperately wanted Xanta to be a normal dog; to have fun, to play, to not have to worry about anything. He kicked more mud on himself and rolled in it a bit, plastering his fur to his body. He shook some mud on Xanta, as the rain had made it able to be flung due to the fact that it was more wet than sticky.

Xanta laughed "Of course not!" she said, letting herself get covered in the mud from Domino. "You know, you look kind of like the dog from my kennel, Storm" she said, jumping into a nearby muddy puddle, causing the water to splash up and go on Domino.

"Storm?" he stopped playing for a moment. "What's his full registered name? I think my father mentioned something about a son he had fathered named Storm... I was but a pup back then..." he smiled sadly. "Haven't seen my father since."

Xanta stopped playing as well, although she was dissapointed that it had to stop, even for a moment. "Erm... " she paused, tring to think hard. "BFP...M... m somthing. Oh! Oh! BFP Midnight Storm!" she said, wondering if her kennel mate could possibly be realted to Domino. They looked alot alike, exept for some minor differences, and he had creamier colored fur.

Domino's mouth dropped open. "Yeah, I know him..." he said quietly. "My dad always used to talk about him... he called him his favorite son out of all of his litters," he said coldly. "But, I bet he's a nice pup."

Xanta walked over, nuzzling Domino affectionetly. It was weird, she had never done that to anyone before, not even her mother. "Well he was wrong... storm is ok and all, but he is mischevious and gets angry easily. Plus, I like you much better" she said, truthfully.

Domino quirked his brow. "Really? Because I have to admit, I was worried that you didn't like me," he joked. He licked her cheek and plodded back into the cave, shaking the rest of the sticky mud off of his coat and trying to dry it in vain.

Xanta raised her eyebrow, unsure of what to think of this comment. She was never properly socilised, and joking mostly confused her more then it did entertain her. After a secound, she relized that he had walked away, and she leaped after him. "wait...why wouldn't I like you? You are nice, and you havn't been mean to me...and you are the only dog I feel comfortable with!" she said, genuinly confused.
