"Are you sure he doesn't have a girlfriend, honey?"
Carrie waded over to the side of the pool outside of which Dixie was sunbathing, her furry, yellow, elephant feet propped up on what was presumably an expensive picnic table. The pool had been fixed, after the whole Fionn Incident, and was now completely swim-worthy. Dixie had found out the hard way that flailing around in four feet of water just wasn't her thing. She shook her head.
"Not even back home?" Carrie knew that both she and Archie weren't from around here, and because of this, she thought she knew them intimately. It was more than a little irritating. But hey, free lawn furniture.
"As far as I know," Dixie sighed, "the only person he was even remotely close to on his planet was his puppeteer. His bond. Whatever. And that was a man. Danon, I think his name was." It was the name Archie said in his nightmares, but Dixie didn't add that. As annoying as her father could be, he deserved some privacy.
"Would you mind if I asked him out?" Carrie said, teeth bared in a creepy, I'm-gonna-git-some sneer.
Dixie shuddered. "Oh god, no." It wasn't clear if she was answering the question or expressing some sort of general disgust. She pulled her sunglasses off of the top of her head and dropped them over her eyes, ending the conversation.

This was a process Green had gone through numerous times.
Show up. Chit-chat. Get baby thrust into your arms. Leave.
It was as simple as wham-bam, thank you ma'am.
Well, not exactly. On most occasions becoming a mother had been a rather unexpected (but not unpleasant) surprise. To her utmost shock, Green found that the feelings that coursed through her body when she actually knew a baby was due any moment were much worse than the way it felt to just have a baby tossed at her out of the blue. Indeed, this signing up business had taken a toll on her nerves.
Green sighed and chewed nervously on her bottom lip as she trudged towards Archie's front door.
What if he took one look at her, decided she didn't deserve this baby and kicked her to the curb?
A little part of her pointed out that he wouldn't have a chance to do that if she didn't at least knock on the door. So, with her fingers crossed behind her back, Green wrapped smartly on the door three times.

Archie was indeed home, but he was hiding for obvious reasons. He stood at the window, barely able to see his daughter's feet because of the awkward angle, and yet so engrossed in keeping his eyes locked on them that he nearly jumped out of his skin at the knocks on the door.
He creeped over to the door, worried that Carrie had somehow tricked Dixie into letting her go around the back of the house. Upon cracking it open and seeing someone who was not Carrie at all, he commenced some wild flapping with the hand that wasn't holding the doorknob, motioning for Green to come inside.

It had taken some time for Archie to answer the door and therefore, Green had had plenty of time to obsess over the numerous reasons that might have kept somebody from answering the door. What if they weren't home? What if they were home, had taken one look at her through the window or something and decided she wasn't fit enough for this? What if they'd all been killed?
The young woman was growing so nervous standing outside the front door that she jumped when Archie finally answered the door and flapped wildly at her.
"H-hello?" she blinked at him and stepped inside quickly, sensing urgency in Archie's movement.
"I'm Green," she whispered and, after wondering why she was speaking so quietly, smiled half-heartedly at him.

Archie slammed the door behind Green and whirled around to face her, a slightly manic smile on his face. "I am so sorry about that," he said, his breath coming out in a rush at the end of the sentence. "There is a psycho woman outside, well actually she's just our neighbor, but she is on a rampage and I don't want to get caught in any of that." He gestured toward the window, his hand moving in little circles meant to encompass all of the crazy that was in the next yard.
He stuck out his other hand, palm down, like he expected her to kiss it or sniff it. "Nice to meet you, I'm Archie." He looked down at his hand and twitched it into regular handshake position. It was quite possible that someone had had too much coffee this morning.

Archie's talk of the crazy woman that lived on the other side of the fence sent her already frazzled nerves jittering again. What could the woman possible be rampaging for?
The possibilities unnerved her.
When he held out his hand she wasn't sure what to do at first and looked up at him with a confused and slightly amused expression.
"I'm Green," she replied and shook his hand once it had moved and she'd realized exactly what he was asking for.
"What's wrong with the woman you're hiding from?" she asked, curiousity getting the best of her.

"Oh! You're here for the baby," he replied, glancing out the window again. That meant he was going to have to go outside soon.
The parts of Archie's face that weren't made of felt got noticeably redder. "She wants me to come over there for dinner," he admitted reluctantly. "Carrie's not someone I want to be eating with."
Archie turned toward the window and said, "We can watch from in here for a while, right?" He smiled. They should be able to see the pod before it landed, and even if they didn't, all of the nearby machinery would warn them of any approaching spacecraft.

"I am," she nodded, decidedly relieved that she didn't have to be the one to bring up the subject. She'd never been good at directing conversation. Green scratched the side of her head. Lately, she hadn't been getting very much conversation.
...unless scolding her children counted.
Something told her that it didn't.
It took her a moment or two two register exactly what it was he meant. What harm could a little dinner cause? Then, somebody switched the light switch of her brain 'on' and the blonde woman couldn't help but giggle.
"I bet it wouldn't be as bad you think," she winked at him playfully.
His next question caught her off gaurd and, as she'd never been to something like this before and didn't know what to expect, gave a short nod of her head.

"Oh good!" Archie said. He didn't have a problem dragging people inside who didn't actually have business at his house, but at least with a new guardian he might have future chances to make a better impression. Not that he had seen any of the kids he had helped rehome since they had landed, but he hoped to remedy that soon.
At Green's nod, Archie turned to lead her over to the large window set into one wall. Strange collections of desktop towers and monitors littered the floor, and as Archie approached, one of the smaller screens began flashing. He leaned over the computers, looking out the window into the sky. "That's weird." There was nothing there. "Well, I'm sure he'll be here soon."

She followed Archie closely, both excited and a little anxious about what she could only guess was going to happen. Green examined the moniters as closely as she could from her standing position, attempting to figure out what all of the flashing meant. What was there purpose?
Archie's voice caught her attention and she turned away from the monitors to stare at the window. It wasn't like she'd been making any progress, anyways.
"What's weird?" she mumured.

"The flashing means the pod's here," Archie explained, waving a hand at the screens while still looking up at the sky. "I just don't see it yet is all." He fought the urge to rap on the glass to get Dixie's attention, afraid that it would surely attract Carrie as well.
He whirled around, not wanting to ignore his guest, despite the fact that he had been talking to her this whole time. "That's where the baby will land," he said, jerking a thumb at the window in the direction of the bullseye.

"Does that mean something's wrong?" Green asked, alarm more than evident in her voice. Visions of the worst possible scenarios made their way to the forefront of her mind and, panicked, Green forced them back.
It was in her nature as a mother to worry so much. Though, it did little for her appearance. She was sure that she'd have more grey hairs than she could count in a few years.
"Oh," she said slowly and pressed her face up to the window in order to get a better look at the landing pad and the sky above it.

"Nah, nothing's wrong. We should probably..." Archie swallowed, "go outside." It just wouldn't do to watch the whole landing with their faces pressed up against the glass. Where was the fun in that? He plodded from the window to the door and pulled it open, holding it for Green. "After you," he said. "Just don't stand directly on the bullseye and everything should be fine."

"If you think it's necessary," Green chuckled, amused by his reluctance to meet the woman outside. A part of her was curious to see them interact, purely because it didn't look like Archie took well to having women fancy him. The awkwardness would be amusing to witness.
"Okay," she smiled and stepped over the threshhold, moving according to where she guessed would be safe; not too close to the bullseye but, close enough.

Archie tried to remain hidden as much by Green's body as possible without looking like that was his goal. It made for a strange, crab-like gait and earned him a scoff from Dixie, which he could hear across the yard. He glared at her, and she turned back to continue an animated conversation with Carrie. At least Carrie was animated. Along with wild arm movements and faces, she also doled out Archie-glances, which he pointedly ignored.
"Oh, see?" he said to Green, pointing at a speck in the sky. It was getting larger awfully fast, but it also appeared to be flying as smoothly and silently as it was supposed to. Archie figured it would be best just to wait for now and see what it did next.
