I hear a lot of people ask me this at school and such, so, I feel that a bit of a rant is in order.
Anyway.
Anime is short for animation, a word adopted from English to the Japanese language. Therefore, anime is just Japanese animation.
Not only that, but anime is very highly stylized. Big eyes, fukus, large...assets, etc; are all common in the anime world. Let's face it, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball Z, Speed Racer, AstroBoy, any anime, you are going to find a style.
Let's take the Dragon Ball series for example, thick lines, large muscles, not much brain behind them, typical for any rough and tough shonen anime. Now Sailor Moon, skimmpy clothing, strange catch phrases that get on your nerves, lesbians(Yes, in the Japanese version, two of them are lesbos.), and guys that looks like girls. Typical for a Magic girl anime, A.K.A. Shojo, yet, very slutty.
-To be added onto.-

People are irksome fools, someone asked me if all cartoons are anime, and when I said no, they called me picky. Now we have idiots running around calling Billy and Mandy and the Fairly Odd Parents anime. Destruction to all.
On a side note, my school may be getting Anime Club back, for you see one kid destroyed the whole thing, but he graduated, and we're going to try and push it back. Hooray!

Same here, most of the people that kept the anime club running at my school graduated, now it's up to me to start it up again!

Well we've still got a bunch of the officers, they're seniors, but we have them, and we have a gullible teacher who's new at this game that we can manipulate.

I'm the treasurer and president, we just re-started it and it's gonna be awesome! To start a club, just talk to your school secretary or principal and ask them what it entails.

I set it up so the officers have an ingenius amount of power, and the president is just a scape goat.

I'm a little tired of all the people who only know the basic anime. They think it's all about robots, martial arts, and big eyes. But it's so much more than that! And I hate it when people go, "Oh, like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z?" I know they don't know any better, but still, it bugs me.... ><;

I know how that is. My old art teacher hated anime, because she said it was all big eyes and no differance in style.
Okay to make it short, I easily proved her wrong, she shut-up about it.

The anime I watch and recomend are much deeper than the stariotipcal types that our western backwards country has come to expect from the limited amounts that get translated and aired dayly. Anime that I love follows a large story arc and does not have each ep. stand alone with define 'lessons' at the end...
I am vice-president of Gaming Club at my school, and I have gotten a large amount of people intrested in manga and they are now seeking the anime counterparts. So I have aided the introduction of manga in the U.S. and to a lesser extent; the transltion of the popular manga's anime into english!

I got my anime criticized because everything was proportional. Seriously, this girl shredded my paper, I just about slapped her.

Or reported her, because, atleast in my school district, abuse of any form is illegal and can get a person suspended. That means even harming the person's sheet of apaper, after they said no, can be considered as abuse.

Yeah... about that, my school has the same policy, but I'm not about to rat someone out over a piece of paper. It was just a drawing.
