1.
The Cold
The darkness engulfed the troops hidden in cracks in the damp cool wall, behind tall ragged stacalites that were covered in slick slime. The smell of moss and dampness swelled in the nostrils of the dark elves as they crouched, laid hidden and waited. Insects scuttered across the cavern floor, seeking shelter for they too felt it coming. The beast was close and not even they are dumb enough to not understand that they have to get out of its way.
Sonda'ar, leader of the troops, sneaked round the stacalites and rocks trying to get around the corner to the next cavern entrance without being seen or heard. The stench of wet fur stank up the dark cavern, making Sonda'ar's stomach swirl with nausia. He held back gagging, for he knew the beast's hearing is ten times better than those of the creatures which walk the land above, hundred and thousands of feet over his head. The sun creatures as he and all who live underneath called them.
He snaked along the wall, keeping his back to the wall and crouching down low. His short, dark hair clung to his head with sweat and his hands stayed close to his scimitar. Hilt was bound with dark leather straps, the blade curved delicatly with small blue gems littering its sides. Forged by the darwven men, they aligned the edge of the blade with small, miniscule diamonds so that it would hack down any enemy with a single clean swipe. He scan the cavern with bright green, fierce eyes, which most say he got from his mother, and finally turned to head back to let his men know they were safe to move on.
As he retraced his footsteps he heard his men shouting and letting out blood curtling screams. He ran fast, hard and agile. His light body bounded over rocks easily and with his night visioned eyes he was able to keep from slipping and tripping. About only a few soldiers came tumbling into the cavern, one of his men clinging to a stump where his arm use to be.
"It came from behind us! RUN!" a soldier cried out. "Get going then men, run. Let the City know and whatever you do.. don't turn back.." Sonda'ar gave his men a final look over his shoulder before facing the entrance alone.

Sonda'ar slipped his scimitar out of its sheath with ease, and ducked behind the nearest stacalite. A huge, shaggy animal came walking into the cavern still chewing on the remains of a soldier. With a final toss of its great head it gave a final snap of his massive jaw and swallowed the torso whole. Licking its lips, he advanced and started sniffing the air. Sonda'ar pressed himself against the cool, slick rock waiting for the perfect moment. Sliding his feet quietly side ways, he rounded the stacalite as the ganthore rounded the opposite side. The two were only inches apart, and Sando'or wondered why the creature hadn't picked up his scent yet. As he rounded and reached behind the beast, he took to his chance and leapt at its back.
As he soared through the air towards the ganthore, the animal spun on its hind legs and swiped a gnarled claw at Sando'or, bellowing a roar that rippled across Sando'or's skin.
Sando'or tucked quickly into a ball and accepted the blow. He flew across the cavern and was slammed onto the wall. Sando'or slid to the floor and landed lightly on the floor and snarled as pain shot through his legs and lower back. He ran at the creature, angered he fell for it's trap. He let out a war cry that ripped through his chest, the ganthore howled and bounded head on.

The two leapt at each other Sando'or's blade leading the way and the ganthore's mouth wide open with his claws outstretched. The beast swipped at Sando'ore, as the elven warrior dove to quickly pivot his body into a dangerous spin, slicing the belly of his enemy. He slid onto his back, eventually throwing his legs back over his head to land gracefully onto his feet. Using his free hand for balance as he continued to slide he watched the shaggy beast hurl forward pressing his claws against his belly. He whirled in anger and eyed Sando'or, his teeth curling into a snarl. Acidic drool dribbled down over its jagged teeth as he turned and lunged at the awaiting elf. Bounding over boulders and charging through stacalites he sped towards Sando'or. Sando'or ran away into a nearby tunnel he raced through the darkness, the beast close behind him. Just as he reached the end he hoped to have neared the creature lept for his back taking the advantage of cornering his enemy. The quick elf however used his speed and ran up the wall and leapt back over the creature, landing on his back.
Using his legs to clamp on, he straddled the ganthore and plummeted his scimitare into the great head, the blade sliding through the thick skull and the jaws of his attacker. with a sickening thump the beast fell onto its side, spasming, his toungue lolled along the blade, slicing itself up even more. With a quick tug the blade slid back out its entrance and Sando'or finished off the beast by slicing open its chest and stomach. The warm, fresh blood sloshed out onto the stone floor followed by intestine and the beast's heart which continue to beat slowly on the ground. wiping his blade on his enemy's fur, he picked up the heart and slid his scimitar back into its sheath. Returning back to the City, he hummed an old lullaby his guardian sung to him as a child, while eating the fresh heart.

The walk back proved worthy of itself, after tossing the arteries aside, Sando'or was able to heal himself quickly, for the heart of ganthores are used for healing purposes. He caught a few small animals such as bats, rats, newts, insects and a few moss to bring back to his home and use as ingrediants for potions and meals. As he approched his city's gate a horn called out over gigantic stone doors. The doors, encrypted with a powerful spell to keep enemies out, had beautiful slender designs and gems decorating to help keep in the spell. "Sando'or! Captain of Elbith Troops, reporting home!" Sando'or called out.
The mighty doors swung smoothly open to let him enter. Three guardsmen stood, readied with weapons and shields. As they saw the warrior step through they relaxed their muscles and stood at a more comfortable pose, sheathing thier weapons and lowering thier shields.
"Your men barely made it through, where are the rest?" one asked. "Dead" replied Sando'or as he stepped briskly passed the three before they could strike up a conversation.
The only light in the City was from a gigantic garden in the tallest tower in the middle of the City. at the top of the tower was a gigantic dome where the garden grew beautifully, flourished with exotic flowers and a tiny pond. The flowers were stolen from the Land Above, and what gave this light away, were the wings of pixies and feariers that were captured. They fly around the dome, millions of them, all sorts of wonderous colors. Little chimes and bells could be heard when the people sleep from the converstions of these delicate little creatures. Sando'or's home was located near the tower, and found the noise quite disturbing. Even though it could be barely heard, he wasn't into the beauty the so called humans, the creatures from the Land Above, were. He thought it sickening. How many times has he thought how these people could live under the sun, with noise and not appreciate the darkness and silence, how you could easily sneak up on prey and dive in for the kill. The smell of fresh moss and dampness fills your lungs. No, he wasn't into the full out nature loving thing as humans were.
He entered his home and slammed the door shut. Tossing his bag filled with his gathered things onto a nearby table, he threw himself onto his bed. Rubbing his temples he sighed irritably and decided to sleep. His little home wasn't very comfortable and cozy, but it had what he needed; a warm bed with fur from past kills, a wooden table and chair, a map that ran along one wall and a counter that was built into the other wall for his tiny labratory. Before drifting off into sleep, Sando'or untied his belt and laid his scimitar in the small space between his bed and wall where it would be out of reach for anyone who tries to make a run with it, or turn it upon him.
* * * * *
His dreams were odd, there was a room, maybe a prison cell. In that cell, shackled to the wall was a beautiful elven maiden. She was of the forest from the Land Above. She had long, silk blue hair. Her eyes were swollen purple, her faced bruised yellow. Under all that uglyness he saw a scatter of freckles dotting her cheeks. Her slender body layed cluttered on the floor, her arms being held up from the shackles. She wore barely nothing, a piece of cloth covered her lower part, a furred top was ripped to shreads to reveal small tender breasts.
She looked up and stared directly at Sando'or. Her eyes were a magnificent blue, bluer than the stones which dotted his blade. Her neck was red with whip lashes, a cut curved down from her left temple all the way to her jawline. She seemed to be saying something, her voice was weak and she whispered so low. Sando'or tried to get closer to hear but was blocked off by something. A power of some sort seemed to be blocking his way and he couldn't get through.
Sando'or.. San.. do'or..
A young clear voice called to him. He tried to respond. He whirled as he felt a hand clap onto his shoulder.
* * * * *
"OW!" Gitspu staggered back and clung his bleeding nose. "I came to wake you! What was that for?!" the young elf asked as he stole a cloth from the table and stuck it upon his nose. "Never touch me when I sleep" Sando'or said briskly as he sat up and grabbed his scimitar, trying to hide his embarressement.

Sando'or threw his legs over the side of his bed and got up. He looked out the window to where the tower shone brightly, and stretched. His muscles curved with ease and he began walking out the door. Gitspu tossed the towel back onto the table and followed him out. The two elven men strode outside and began walking to the gigantic mansion located near the rear of the city, aligning the wall of the monstrous cavern in which the people were populating.
The mansion itself was carved out from the stoned walls, being held up by nature itself; roots, rocks, dirt and mud. Over the thousands of years of being built, not once has it seem to cave in under the thousands of feet of dirt above it. Only twice in it's lifetime has it ever been through an earthquake and survived both easily. Lanterns and candles burned brightly along the walls outside and in to offer some light to the unfortunate beings with poor night vision.
The City itself consisted of four basic races; the dark elves, the dwarves, very few humans and the slaves. Slaves were of course the captured forest elves from the Land Above. Tall, slender, proud elves these were. No matter how much you would beat them, no matter how much work you gave them, they still head thier heads up high and never said a word, fearing the consequences of such acts.

Gitspu fiddled with a leather thong he found on the ground and hummed a lullaby well known amongst the poorer families of the City, growing up, his father was a human and his mother a slaved forest elf. His father fell in love with his mother, but as rules followed, other races of lower families were not supposed to mingle. So his father kept thier love together a secret, only saying he took to raping the elven maiden, which was a common act that was done often. Eventually, the empire found out and beheaded both parents, handing Sando'or Gitspu to raise as an apprentice. Many times has Sando'or looked to Gitspu as a younger brother, even sometimes as a son.
Gitspu had to sleep in the shelter for apprentices and lost children, only being 85 years of age, he was one of the youngest apprentices there was.

Reaching the doors to the mansion, Sando'or stopped and let Gitspu walk on to knock for him, using the iron door knockes, engraved with beautiful vines and leaves. Gitspu's long forest green hair was tied back in a tight pony tail. his eyes flashed golden with red strikes through the pupil. He was handsome for a mixed race, baring the features of the forest elf and the muscles and posture of his human father, many of the girls of lower families seeked his attention.
Gitspu stood back behind Sando'or to let him walk through. Once inside, they each took a piece of smooth, colored stone which they put into thier mouthes. The stone melted away into a wonderful flavoured liquid and drained into their veins. These stones were made so whomever consumed them wouldn't be able to tell lies to the lord and his family. If thus does happen, the liquid would boil and the consumer would writhe in pain until confessing his lie. If they don't however, the heart would eventually cook itself from the inside and the consumer dies a painful death.
* * * * *
Gitspu hated coming to the Mansion, and he hated the wonderful tasting stones they swallowed everytime. He was afraid to accidently lie and burn his insides out. But following Sando'or he reassured himself all will be well. He knew that once inside the Mansion, Sando'or would do all the talking.
They entered the main chamber where his lordship sat, being fed by one of the beautiful elven slaves. How he wished he lived up on the Land of Above. He kept this thought to himself however, for he knew Sando'or would beat him mercilessly. When Gitspu questioned him when he was younger, Sando'or seemed to spat the answers out, hating the Land of Above. But every slave he ever had the chance to speak to would tell him wonderful stories and sing him songs and lullabies that he would only sing when he was away from Sando'or. He loved hearing about the different creatures that roamed the lands and most of all, he loved the sun. A giant ball of fire which shone high and mighty in the sky, warming the lands and growing the plants and trees. He wished very much to see the above lands one day.

The two walked down the long elegant carpet towards his lordship and as they reached the bottom of the steps, Gitspu knealed and bowed his head. Sando'or stood behind him and placed a foot upon Gitspu's back and comfortably knealed onto his knee, bowing his head. This posture the two posed was a posture to show respect, the apprentice being of lower class must be on the ground to support his master's weight. Which wasn't so bad when your master happens to be an elf, since thier weight was as light as a feather.
"What news do you bring to me warrior?" said his Lordship Mortharge bellowed, before taking another bightfull of meat. "No survivors, and I killed the beast roaming our territories" answered Sando'or, keeping his head bowed. "Good. Arise worrior, we need to speak privatly" His Lordship rose from his throne and sweeped his arms to gesture Sando'or to a side door, his silken robes swaying to his movements. A brilliant blue with a touch of a dashing violet colored Lordship Mortharge's robes with golden stitching around the hems. His long waist length beard use to be a chestnut brown, but now streaks of white and grey appeared like salt and pepper. Showing his age the corner of his green eyes wrinkled with knowledge. Not once has anyone from his time seen him spread a smile upon his lips, but a set of pearl white teeth when he spoke teased the knowledge of having a handsome smile. Sando'or stepped up the carpetted staircase and called over his shoulder to Gitspu "Stay" and gave him a sly wink to reassure him he wouldn't be gone for too long. Gitspu only nodded and bowed his head once again. The second the two disappeared behind the matching curtain the carpet led to Gitspu heard the call of a bird. It's song chirped beautifully through the room with happy tones. Gitspu couldn't help but spread a grin and in the corner of his eye he saw Maleen, a slave peering out at him, whistling his favorite song. He took a quick glance up the stairs and howled a wolven cry the elves taught him, from up the stairs the two slaves feeding his Lordship peeked into the next chamber and sent him a signal of a flying bird gesturing with thier hands. He got up and barreled through to Maleen. She came out, her peasent clothing tattered in rags she held her arms out to him. He tackled her, throwing her up in circles in the air.

Letting out giggles, Maleen embraced Gitsu happily and he settled her down. Taking his hand she led the way to where the slaves normally would work in thier little homes buitl in cells under ground below the mansion. All the slaves glanced around nervously as they saw Gitspu wandering the halls being led by a fellow slave, hoping these would one day stop, fearing the consequences they would ALL go through if they were to be caught.
Leading him to her work station in the kitchen she fed him all kinds of desserts, stuffing more into his mouth before who finish the first mouthfull. As he tried swallowing, she put some little cakes and treats into a leather pouch for him to string around his waist with his purse to blend in easily.
Gitspu loved Maleen dearly and would do anything to find the one who cut her toungue. The poor girl had answered back to his Lordship the day she and her sisters were captured. As a penalty, one of the guardsmen hacked off her tounge with thier dagger and fed it to the timber wolves his Lordship kept as pets. His heart pounded in his chest when he gazed into her loving eyes, knowing that she too loved him, but to hear those words escape her lips will be a wish never granted. Her eyes, as golden as the sun. sparkled with excitement and her smile spread warmth through his body. He ran his fingers through her short, shaven hair, the color of rich brown. He lean down and kissed her cherry lips, ever so softly and held her face with his hand. '' I must be off before the two return'' Gitspu whispered softly. Maleen nodded and hugged him before leading him back up into the main chamber where Gitspu gave his love a final kiss and sprinted back quietly to where he was and knelt as he did before. He glanced up one last time to send a wink her way and bowed his head just as the two men returned from thier meeting.
