GRRRRR! Today at school, a girl in my class was drooling over some guy from Simple plan. I then informed her that they were somewhat emo and she replied "No way, they're like, SO punk!" I then tried to explain to her what punk was, mentioning bands like The Sex Pistols and other punk bands and she refused to believe that Simple plan were not punk. Please excuse me if I'M the misguided one, but should emo bands get away with the "punk" label?

It's not particularly the bands fault most of the time. It's usually the media's fault for labeling them something that they aren't, and then the general public just accepts that label without question because they are so used to be spoon-fed information about things. Also, there are bands that the media label emo when they are no where near it. Ex: I was flipping through music channels, seeing if there was anything good on. Landed on MTV, heard them call Taking Back Sunday emo. Whether or not they are, I don't know, though I highly doubt it since it came from MTV saying this.

Then there's also the arguement of BANDS labeling themselves as something when they aren't, like HIM calling themselves Love Metal (at least, the fans say they call themselves that. I just don't care either way). It comes down to if a band calls themselves something, usuaully their fans won't question any other genre for them, because if the band said it, it must be true.

Third arguement: The sound of a band. I have a friend who referred to SR-71 as Punk just because of the sound of their guitars. I don't think they're punk, I'm thinking more along the lines of Alt Rock, but I'm not too good with genres. But still, people just assume that if a band has a particular sound, then they must be part of that genre.

But I feel that the girl just assumed they were punk for one of those three reasons.

Also, on the note of Emo, that really isn't a genre, to my knowledge, unless we're talking about Emotive Hardcore, which died a while ago.

Edit: Damn, that was WAY too much detail for this early in the morning. I'm off to work for a few hours now.

I know, that really surprised me. I'm not usually that serious or detailed, but I just felt like this was something I could work with. I don't think that'll be happening again anytime soon. It was one of those one shot a week things for me.

Emo is a genre, it's just not associated with any of the bands the mainstream media calls emo.

I'm just going off of what I read in the Emo 101 thread in the music forum, so I pretty much consider most Emo to be dead as a doornail right now.

Nah, I knew it existed, though before I read the thread, I was absolutely ignorant to what the term really meant. I'm glad I made myself read all of that, now I feel better when I use the term around people. Self-pride FTW! *gets shot* I know, it was lame.

Funeral Doom Metal FTW!

Anyway, Simple Plan, along with most of the current pop-punk scene is in all actuality just shitty alternative rock. Emo relates to a brand of hardcore, not lyrical themes.

The Emo music style includes elements from Hardcore Punk. And the Emo clothing style decends, with influences, from Punk clothing style. However, Punk image is more about political questioning and engagement and structure, whilst Emo is about being Emotive.

The girl was obviously ignorant and didn't realize that what attracted her to the guy was the Punk influenced, probably, clothing style.
