That night, there is a news broadcast. The president has announced a speech; something involving mutants. For those not around, Nebula makes sure to tape it.
"My fellow Americans... we have found ourselves at a crossroads. Until now, this administration has been unclear about our stance on the Mutant threat. I know that many of you have been troubled by this.
It is a difficult problem. All of it have wrestled with it. On one hand, are these mutants not people? Are they not Americans, like you and I? It certainly seems that way. Most mutants are exactly like us as children, raised by a mother and a father, just like us. Do they not deserve, then, the same rights as any other American?
Looking at it from another perpective, though, these mutants are dangerous. A handful of them, with the right set of powers, can do more damage than an entire army. And they can do so without any weapons or training. There is no way to regulate mutant powers the way guns can be regulated... not without regulating an entire group of people.
This administration is not prepared to do that. I know, you're scared. You don't want these mutants... these people, who you aren't even sure if you can look at as people... going to school with your children. Walking the streets un-noticed.
I have thought about this decision for a long time, but at this time, I do not think that any kind of attempt at regulating mutants is going to help the situation. These people are human, are American. They were born on American soil, just like you and I. And they deserve the same God-given right to freedom. To 'register' or 'regulate' the entire group, as many have suggested, would be to take away that freedom. Too many times, in the past, has a group of people been condemned, meerly for existing. I will not allow that sort of thing to happen, not in America, not in the Land of the Free.
I hope that we can live in peace and harmony with all of those around us, especially those in our very midst. Criminals will be dealt with as they have been in the past, and criminal mutants will be handled according to the severity of their crimes and the threat they pose. The organizations that have been assembled to deal with criminal mutant threats, such as the Protectors, will continue to do so. They still stand strong against the evil that all of us fear. Right now, those mutants who pose such a threat are few and far between.
Make no mistake, however. If mutantkind ever does pose a threat to the freedom and safety of the rest of America, I will not hesitate in taking action against them. Although I value their freedom, I will not allow it to jepordize the rest of of society. If the freedom of society as a whole requires that action must be taken against a particular group, then I will not be afraid to take that action. I hope that such a day never comes.
Thank you, and good night."

*drops the 500 lb. weight he was practicing with in the gym weight room as he hears the subject of the President's address over the omnipresent television screens.*
Could this be...? No, there has to be a catch...
*sits calmly on the bench, watching the entirety of the public address followed by a lengthy blank stare after it finishes.*
No..... WAY!!!
*leaps into the air, immediately surging with energy as his electrical sheath envelopes his body and he bolts out of the room to the indoor track where he proceeds to do 500 laps in less than 10 seconds... because he needs to burn off the energy.*
Wait...
*stops and hovers in midair as he suddenly becomes contemplative*
Somebody is bound to mess this up... They always do.
*looks around*
And now I'm talking to myself and being weird...

*several seconds later.*
"Maybe I should go get a U.S. citizenship card or something. Hmmm."
*leaves the castle to find someone else in HQ*

((Since Cheshire just got back, she has missed the first showing of the broadcast, but is in the HQ unpacking.))
((In her room...)) *starts to unpack things from a few bags* "Gah. Why do old books have to be so heavy? I should of learned something to move stuff with my mind..."
*sighs and continues to unpack*

Mercy, who was apparently taking a long time recuperating from her wounds in a remote room of the Protector's HQ, was also listening to the broadcast, fuming.
"Oh what a crock. Clearly, he's calling us mutants out...like we're some sort of enemy living in the country..."
She pauses, and looks around.
"And I'm talking to myself..."
With a sigh, she gets to her feet, and then blinks out of the room, looking for other people.

After a while, a flash of white light heralds the the arrival of Starbright into the kitchen, where she looks for something to eat before spotting Cheshire poking her head in.
"Oh...hey." Mercy says to her before she pops her head into the fridge and starts fishing around for eats. "Did you, uhm...catch the president's speech?"

Mercy flinches at Johan's shouting, and rolls her eyes before she answers him.
"It's the girls! Calm down, spaz!"
At that, she turns back to Cheshire, shutting the fridge door with her hip so as to hang onto all the sandwich materials she had collected from it. She starts making a rather large and unhealthy looking sandwich as she talks.
"He made some vague BS speech about how mutants are humans too but they better damn well not threaten the US. Basically, he was daring us to do something so he could get on with the extermination like the voting public wants...at least, that's how I interpreted it. Maybe other people think of it another way."
Mercy shrugs, puts the finishing touches on her sandwich, and bites into it.

"Also did you guys see that crazy presidential speech?" *says this hoping they come out to discuss the subject.*

"popsicles..." *heads to the freezer and grabs them*
*makes a jesture to Mercy towards the dining area* *heads into the dining area and takes a seat across from Johan*
*tosses the box near Johan coming close to his structure* "Hehe... sorry."
"As of the president thing, no I didn't... I wish I did, but I was..." *pauses for a sec* "Unpacking some things, but I think Mercy did."

Mercy sat on the edge of the table as she hungrily crammed the sandwich into her mouth, but stopped and chewed carefully before answering Johan.
"Yeah...I didn't like the president's tone. Seemed a little adversarial, if you ask me. What'd you think, popsicle demon?"

"Well, it the hole thing seems very sketchy almost like he wants all the mutants, or superhumans to reveal themselves, a call out if you will. I think its a chalenge, I can also so see some rebel superhuman activists soon being a problem." *pauses to start eating some popsicles.* "But whatever he was trying to do I have a feeling we will be busy."

"Oh? I will play both sides card? I hate when people do that, so if nothing happens or something good happens they go, see, I told you so, but at the same time if something goes bad. They can say, I warned you it could be a problem, and set this up as a backup plan...."
*sigh*
"I should probably try and catch it later, but I need to catch up on some reading. I have like three or four books I want to read before going to bed."
