U.S. education system up in smoke?Well, it is back to school time and I'm thinking about the stuff everyone needs to get from school...that they don't get anymore. Like a good solid background in reading, writing and math. What do you think?

Just because I'm a teen and I hate school doesn't mean what I'm about to say is all teen angst and "I don't know what's good for myself". The concept of school is such a great idea, but they waste 6 years of your life teaching you unnecessary bits of information, that chances are you might not use in your life. It'd be more helpful if they have certain courses in math that taught you what you needed to know based upon what type of labor you'd like to do (accounting, architect and such). Not once in school do they teach you how to do your taxes or rarely do they even teach you how to balance a check book. Those are things you need to know in life. While schools have job workshops and such I really don't think it helps as much as they think.
The U.S. is in such a rush to have a better educational system than Japan, Russia and blah blah blah, and they have mandatory teaching of useless information, that they've totally obliterated school. Some of it, yeah I can't agrue, you need to know. But when will you be asked what the slope of that crooked McDonald table is? Of course the information helps some who are to be in a designated field but while others...it was just a waste of some valued childhood. stare Why do I have such a extended vocabulary? Why am I good at writing? I can tell you it's not because of school and I had to go and hone my literacy and writing skills myself. There are people in the 12th grade who can't pronounce easy words that should've been taught in 8th grade. It's a lot of students and not just ones who have learning problems or a disability, but intelligent ones as well.
And that was my rant. mrgreen

Spill your guts...but it makes sense...where is the common sense in teaching a 4th grader for months about how to take a particular assessment test?...wasted time! The parents had to go to a 3 hour class on how to help their child put the answers on the test...not the knowledge base but the format.

I had children that had gone though the public schools years ago. They were horrible then, but my children did well. the next generation of children was in the 80's and 90's in their schools years and public schools became a joke at that point. so high school was spent in private schools. Then I became a parent late in life and did homeschooling for this child until last year. My daughter wanted to try public school for eight grade. As Anna puts it( It was her worst nighmare) twisted Now that my daughter is entering high school,Anna is going to boarding school. She tell me how excited this will be smile for she goes to school Sunday evenings and stays until after school on Thursdays. Then comes home for a 3 day weekends. As Anna puts it, She can visit friends at night, sports and travel is involved at school,a bit of learning how to take care of herself, learning to make the right choices and learning from her mistakes during the week. Then coming home and being with her family, being spoiled a bit more than usual, church. What more can a girl ask for in her teen years. So Im all for homeschooling for elem.years smile private or homeschooling for the Jr. years and as far as the highh school years its really depends on the child.(private or homeschooling) Public schools are a place now days for children who needs to be babysat and for learning how to be street smart. I see nothing worth while in them at all cry

There needs to be structure in education. Education has turned into a time of babysitting and experimentation. Because of this our children can't write. Many can't read...many can't do the math necessary for everyday life. More emphasis should be placed on the basics!

Gangs can ruin the fun of no dress code. In my school, we can't bring ball caps to school, wear anything that has weapons, graffiti, skulls, death or snowmen...yeah, snowmen! We must wear our shirts tucked in, so no hidden stuff! And they keep adding new stuff all the time. domokun

Mine's the first no vote... because... I believe in more basics (and electives too) taught OUT of schools. My kids are homeschooling. We love it.

Anymore, they teach to the standardized tests, like the SAT and ACT. Those tests are the "be all and end all" of the education system, and basic education is neglected BECAUSE the teachers are forced to teach to these standardized tests.

Also, the teachers can't really do anything anymore if a student behaves badly in class.

This is an example of school problems...and not enough teaching...sadly!
Hey Everyone I'm sorry to say that this time around I don't have very good news. The school board in our district has decided to cut teachers and their salaries so as to make up for defecits. As a result of this, the students in my union high school district will be under immense pressure this year in particular to become more independent learners because of the lack of teachers due to the school boards poor decisions about our fundings. In simple terms, we a students will be teaching ourselves more often than a teacher will be. That being said, I won't be on Gaia as much anymore because I'm gonna need to study even more now that teachers are being laid off and substitutes (who may or may not know anything about the subject they're now teaching) will be taking their places. As much as I love my Gaian family and the Gaian community in which I thrive in after studies, school is more important. I won't quit Gaia and I don't think thats going to be an option for me at all (its way too addicting and I love my little family too much), but my time will be reduced. If you have any questions or would like further details send me a PM. My cut time on Gaia won't start till next week. Thanks for your time again, flute.soloist

I think the school system is way too relaxed. The schools in some other countries are lot stricter and really expect more from the student than here in the states. People are starting to have a differentr attittude about education these days. It becomes a rude awakening when they get out into the real world. Remember what people say about hind sight?

Also, I think too much emphasis is based on sports and extracuricullar activities and not enough is placed on education. Also, we have an "all purpose" education system and some other countries don't have that.
