Well, I decided to bring the Featured Hip Hop Artist Thread in the Jekts since it's my way to save thread making time.
It goes like this: I'll find an artist that I think is worth listening and post some information here. Most of the information will be hefty, some won't, but it'll have musical samples for all to enjoy.
The Rules:
Don't flame Don't spam Don't disrespect
That should be it for now.

Introducing...D-Sisive ::Bio::Information from d-sisive.comAt the impressionable age of nine, Derek Christoff witnessed a moment in music history that would (unbeknownst to him) alter the course of his young adult life: he sat transfixed in front of the television, watching the DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince music video for ‘A Nightmare On My Street’. At once Derek was pleased by the reference to his favorite horror film, but also perplexed by the strange yet undeniably cool rhymes and rhythms he was hearing. Not knowing anything about Hip Hop music at the time – except that he simply must hear more – Derek begged his unsuspecting mother to buy him the He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper cassette. Thus was young Derek sent blind and stumbling into a world of words and music that would slowly transform his thoughts and sensibilities, his style and aspirations, his very sense of self!
Years rolled by and Derek’s musical tastes grew more refined. The sounds of Cypress Hill, Funkdoobiest, Black Sheep, Wu Tang Clan, Redman, and A Tribe Called Quest would continually flow through monstrously huge headphones that seemed to be a permanent fixture of the boy’s head, some weird biological growth designed to force the music in, and keep the noise of the rest of the world out. At fifteen, he engaged himself even more deeply to the music and, morphing into D-Sisive, began to write his own lyrics. An independently released EP entitled J.A.C. (199 cool was the culmination of this burst of teenaged creativity and inspiration.
The mid 90s saw D-Sisive become fully submerged in the Toronto Hip Hop scene, mainly through his contribution to the groundbreaking Cryptik Souls- a collective of local emcees that could proudly boast the membership of such talents as Abdominal, Moka Only, Circle Research, and many others. Other collaborations included songs with or for Mastermind, Len, Abs and Fase, and Classified to name a few.
But, his most notable collaboration was with Canadian DJ/Producer DJ Serious. Their single, ‘Popped’ – a song exclusively about D-Sisive’s disdain for pop music and his fantasies of physically tormenting the prominent pop stars of the time, set against Serious’ radio-friendly beat – gained worldwide attention and (ironically) earned a slot in Canadian radio’s Top 40. The success of the song helped the DJ Serious album, Dim Sum, earn a Juno Award Nomination for Best Hip Hop Recording (2001) as well as an Urban Album of the Year award in 2002 at the Canadian Independent Music Awards. “Popped” was also featured on the Rawkus UK Scratch compilation. DJ Serious and D-Sisive embarked on a Canadian tour to promote the album and after returning to Toronto and performing solo, D-Sisive was voted Best Unsigned Artist in 2002 by Now magazine, and named Live Performer of the Year by Fritz le Chat in Vice magazine.
Though proud of the success of ‘Popped’, D-Sisive was unprepared for the simultaneous praise and backlash the song generated. Perhaps finally realizing that people were in fact listening to, appreciating and/or hating his music, it became clear that it was time for him to consider what exactly it was that he wanted to create through his music, what he wanted and needed to say. Having earned a platform from which he could perform and attract crowds of both unseasoned and opinionated listeners, D-Sisive was forced to re-evaluate his songwriting and what being an emcee was all about for him. For a few years, he did just that, disappearing from the scene and taking time to expose himself to new artists and ideas that would come to influence his later work both lyrically and in terms of production.
In 2005, D-Sisive “came out of retirement” with his contribution to the first two singles on DJ Format’s sophomore album If You Can’t Join ‘Em, Beat ‘Em. The album debuted at number one on the UK Independent Music charts in its first week, and marked the beginning of D-Sisive’s UK/European success. Touring with DJ Format and long-time colleague Abdominal across the UK and Europe for much of 2005, D-Sisive performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Leeds and Reading, Australia’s Good Vibrations, and Ireland’s Electric Picnic. D-Sisive embraced his time under the spotlight, attracting enthusiastic fans across the continent and working harder than ever as he edited and released Yesterday. The Mixtape, a collection of early recordings and rare, unreleased material spanning from 1995 to 2004. For those who missed J.A.C. almost ten years ago, this was the first collection of D-Sisive’s music ever released.
More recently, D-Sisive has done production work for a new project initiated by Stu Stone (founding member of the LA-based The Stone Movement, supporting actor in the cult-hit Donnie Darko, and voice of ‘Chuckie’ in the beloved My Pet Monster animated series) and actor/comedian Jamie Kennedy (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, Malibu’s Most Wanted). D-Sisive produced and co-wrote their internet hit ‘Rolling With Saget’, which includes vocals by Full House dad Bob Saget. The song will be featured in the upcoming MTV series “Blowin’ Up” which is set to premier this year.
Currently, D-Sisive is self-producing an EP entitled This Is Just A Friend Call, as well as finishing 1995.The Pre-Album which will feature production by D-Sisive, DJ Format, The Arkeologists, Muneshine, Moss, Mr. Attic, Classified, Self-Proclaimed, Snoog and DJ Serious. Both projects will be released on D-Sisive’s own .aboyinaroom.recordings. in 2006. As for his first official album, don’t hold your breath.

Introducing...Grand Agent

::Bio::
As the clock read 2000 zero zero, the party was not over (sorry Prince), but just beginning. A Philadelphia wordsmith named Jared Taylor was rapidly climbing the top of the rap charts. The debut solo single, “Mingling…With Mayhem,” a Top 3 song on the rap charts, introduced the Grand Agent to the new millennium and vice versa. The album, "By Design", is a return to the most basic of hip-hop principles – lyricism. The main message throughout Grand Agent’s solo debut is that verbal communication is fun. Some people might be doing it for the paycheck. But a real emcee does it for the love. This love manifested itself early. "When I was 11 years old, my moms had this microphone,” says the Grand one. “And out of nowhere one day I decided I was going to see what the new toy could do. I cranked up the music and like second nature, I started blasting my own words through the mic." Grand Agent got his start on the Philly streets with the group Name in 1995. The trio of Mr. Cisum, Old Man, and Agent made a “name” for themselves by tirelessly releasing and promoting their music independently. In 1997 the debut single, “12,”sold out its limited release. The next year, some tracks from the never-officially-released album, "The Lost Page Of The B-Boy Document", became a regular on Bahamadia’s radio show on Philly’s 103.9. One of those being “Essay Tee,” which was Grand’s solo coming out party. The group sold the album on home-dubbed cassettes at shows and local stores around the city. A four song EP titled “Artist Of The Yeah,” featuring Philadelphia ‘s own Schooly D and the Mountain Brothers, as well as Wise Intelligent (Poor Righteous Teachers), was released in mid-2000. Even though "By Design" is a solo project, the self-contained Name remain a tight unit while they each go off on their own (FYI: Group member, Old Man, is an award-winning theatrical director; one of the first African Americans to direct in Ireland). The first single from "By Design" is the optimistic, “Every Five Minutes,” produced by Kut Masta Kurt (who also produced “Mingling…”). “I wanted to capture the essence of when a new song comes out,” Grand Agent declares. “When kids on the street scream out, ‘that’s the joint.’ Also, the excitement of the setup, from the street teams putting up flyers to pitching the DJ’s. And then the song is on the radio like every five minutes.” The flipside, “Know The Legend” is produced by and features rap veteran Lord Finesse. Hi-Tek from Reflection Eternal produced “It’s Only Right (Rap Niggaz, Pt.2),” a fiercely competitive but friendly collaboration with Planet Asia. Grand Agent produced “Rap Niggaz,” a bouncy duet with D.I.T.C. Bronx bomber, A.G. The Mountain Brothers also produced the tracks, “Grand Right Now” and “Water.” How did the name arise? “Grand simply means great,” says the 25 year-old. “A little boasting, I guess. One of the definitions of agent is medium or channel, and I feel that I’m the channel for people to hear great music. Plus, the word ‘Grand’ is a permanent form of remembrance. The originators started their names with ‘Grand’ not so much for the literal sense but, for the intentional authority it possessed.” From Gamble & Huff and the whole Philly Int’l sound, to Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, The Roots, and Jill Scott, Philadelphia is a city that knows its music. The town has an impressive musical legacy, and now this Agent makes plans to make it a Grand one as well.

Introducing...Icon the Mic King

::Bio::Information from the official websiteBy now iCON the Mic King is surely a name that is either on the tip of your tongue or the bottom of your fingers. However in this, the information era where it all it takes is the right software packages and a microphone to become a rapper, it is the names transformed to word of mouth that get acquainted with longevity. The survival of the fittest code of ethics requiring aspiring rappers to pay their dues has been substituted with rap’s answer to “get rich quick” schemes and fast food culture. Gone are the days where MCs spent years honing their craft before entering the arena with their sharpest sword; now their first song and their best impersonation are one and the same and they are on sale at a store or bootlegger near you.
Brewerytown North Philadelphia native Michael King is the last of a dying breed. iCON’s music combines the principles of yesteryear with the cutting edge of progressive lyricism while maintaining its soul. That statement in and of itself may be hard to swallow but with the context of his influences (Pharoahe Monch, WuTang Clan, and the Lyricist Lounge-era) it becomes clear that this torchbearer for upper-echelon emceeing is everything he says he is.
Twice as arrogant as Kanye West this Howard University college dropout and internationally renowned ex-battle champion left the battle circuit in 2003 to further solidify his rightful position amongst respected songwriters. Before retiring the Mic King garnered a laundry list of championship and an even longer list of 2nd place titles some of the most memorable being: 2000 Hookt Cyberclash Favorites battle Champ, 2000 HU Verbal Armageddon Champ, 2000 Erico’s Mic Fight 2peat Champ, 2000 Uh-Oh Entertainment Round Series 2peat Champ, 2001 BET’s MC World Cup Finalist, 2002 Seattle’s Brainstorm2 Finalist, 2002 BET/Burger King College Tour Battle Finalist, 2003 Guerilla Grammar Finalist, 2003 Major Noise Battle Champ. The irony is iCON has shown and proven in an arena that destroys careers but only views battling as one of the springboards that helped in networking and snatching your attention.
At the end of the day the real issue is the quality of the music and the struggle to get it heard by the masses. Since 2001 iCON has appeared on at least two internationally distributed compilations per year but it wasn’t until 2002 while awaiting the funds to press his first 12” that iCON slapped together his first release. Music for Bootleggas EP was a collection of recordings compiled in the span of three weeks to sell at the Brainstorm2 battle. Very raw. Very unpolished. Before moving on iCON would sell 700 copies out of his backpack and via his website and two of the songs (“Greener Grass” and “Parallel”) would be re-recorded and re-released. Later that year in true DIY-fashion iCON released his first in a series of 12-inch singles “Ahead of My Time” ft. Tonedeff and PackFM with production from Kno of the Cunninlynguists. The critics rejoiced and fans consumed as the record sold out. In the downtime between singles “Rent Money Music” acted as food for the loyal subjects to know the Mic King was still on his throne and nearly 2000 copies were moved…again out of his backpack and online. Finally in 2004 iCON began to poke his head thru indie rap’s glass ceiling with the nearly simultaneous releases of his first official EP “Intricate Spectrum” (Indieground) and his long-awaited “IndieInBurns” (Third Earth Music) ft. C-Rayz Walz and production from Blockhead and Black Panther. Once again the critics rejoiced and the record sold out. With many more projects on the way (all leading up to his debut LP “self sent erred”), an undying passion to create, and unparalleled work ethic you’re beginning to see why so many of the indie rap breadwinners are scared to let iCON the Mic King in.
Son of a Philadelphian and a New Yorker iCON’s sound is definitively east coast. His highness is of the same royal bloodline as Phaoahe Monch, Prince Poetry, and closer to home The Last Emperor. His cryptic lyricism is vivid and, coupled with his rapid fire delivery, reminds you a time when rappers ripped beats. Every time iCON the Mic King spits on a track you get the feeling he knows this may be his only chance to capture your attention.
Whether solo or with ex-DMC/ITF champion and veteran party-rocker DJ Cue Two the work ethic and the need to impress translates to the stage. iCON’s stage show has allowed him to make headway in this saturated market keeping fans talking from Philly to Australia and most locales in-between. No stranger to the grind, iCON has hit the road on Greyhound buses with $5 in his pocket just to prove his name belongs in your mouth and has rocked stages with: Jay-Z, Ludacris, Ghostface, GZA, Raekwon, KRS ONE, Nice & Smooth, RJD2, SoulPosition, Jedi Mind Tricks, El P, Immortal Technique, Aesop Rock, C-Rayz Walz, OneBeLo, Hangar18, QN5, Illogic, Jean Grae, Roosevelt Franklin, J-Zone, Louis Logic, Apathy, Mr. Lif, and continues to leave crowds in awe in any locale that allows it.
HipHop has hit rock bottom. MCs have made themselves a commodity. Our luminaries are dictated by marketing and promotion schemes. However there is at least one emcee left building a legacy from pure talent and skill. That man is iCON the Mic King. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Introducing...Edan

::Bio::Info from Wikipedia.orgEdan Portnoy is an American alternative hip hop performer, based in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an emcee, DJ and record producer.
He is a former member of the band Fiber 2001 and is known for his eclectic mix of classic mid-80s till early 90s hip hop with 60s rock, funk and other styles. His mix-tape Sound of the Funky Drummer collects hip hop tracks sampling James Brown's "Funky Drummer", which has been called the most-sampled record of all time. In 2005, he released the album Beauty and the Beat, which drew acclaim for its creative lyricism as well as the production, which features samples from diverse genres, including funk, psychedelia, and 60s rock.
As a wealthy only child, he attended CU in late 2003-2005, majoring in production. The Rockville, Maryland native had already been experimenting with 4 and 8 track home recording using both live instruments (he is an aspiring drummer and bassist) and a truthfully Native Tongues inspired, sample based approach since 1996 when his parents paid for him to go to the ultra expensive Berklee School of Music. He quickly advanced in skill throughout college having only limited musical skill and education through high school. Continuing on this path Edan completed the officially unreleased album the end is forever on an 8-track digital cassette recorder in his dorm room while in his sophomore year. The only tracks to be released from this project appeared on his debut single in 1998. This marginally sought after 12" contains the songs "The Es Have It featuring Eric Ferguson" and "Migraine," and was released by the now defunct and never was Boston indie imprint Biscuithead Records. The single introduced Edan's slightly askew humor (sample lyric: The principal got nervous/When I ran into his office shirtless) and dusty production style to the world.
After leaving Berkley School of Music in 2001, Edan began work on his official debut album, Primitive Plus. The single for "godlove" which featured MC Mr. Lif was released on Sun/Moon Records, after which Edan became the first artist signed to UK label Lewis-John Recordings, which released the single "Mic Manipulator." Around this time edan began performing with several musicians from Berklee under the name Fiber. The band performed mainly in the Boston area, playing edan's songs interspersed with long jazz improvisations during which he would scratch records and play with a delay pedal. The affiliation was short-lived, however, as Edan soon left to pursue solo ventures and Fiber began performing with MCs Bomshot and Professor Shuman. Primitive Plus was released in 2002 to self proclaimed critical acclaim. Edan handled all the production (wow!), rapping and turntablism (wow again!) on the album, with the exception of guest shots by Mr. Lif and Alaskan Fishermen member Father Time. In addition, production on one track, "Key-Bored," was done by Eli (aka Memory Man.) The experimental/throwback vibe of the album was also endowed with some of the '90s innovations in rhyming and scratching, which led to the album's title, explained on the title track as "primitive plus futuristic."
Edan then released a mixtape, Fast Rap. The trite rip off of golden era burners by luminaries like Big Daddy Kane, Kool G Rap and lesser known mic rippers like Black, Rock & Ron was tired and non influential, not sparking a renewed interest in "fast rap" and hardly influencing eBay auctions for the records used on the tape.
A non-LP track single, "Drop Some Smooth Lyrics," followed on Edan's own Humble Mag label, backed by the hardly hilarious Kool Keith impression, "Ultra '88." In 2002 he released the wonderfully lo-fi "Sprain Your Tape Deck EP," which featured some of the CD-only cuts from Primitive Plus and two new tracks. All of these songs had been recorded live in his home studio directly to an ordinary cassette deck after his 8-track finally broke. Deprived of the ability to overdub, all of the EP's scratching, mixing and effects were done live as Edan rapped to a sequencer and drum machine.
Edan then began producing other trust-funded non artists, providing remixes for Mr. Lif and Souls Of Mischief, and album cuts like Akrobatik's "The Hand That Rocks The Cradle." Teaming up with fellow Boston MC/DJ/producer Insight in 2003, Edan began performing a much tighter live set. "Edan & Insight" (later billed as Duplex) often incorporate their DJ abilities into performances and display a level of showmanship that recalls the glory days of the Furious Five and the Cold Crush Brothers. Edan's "Johnny The Fox" routine involved rhyming with the mic in one hand while cutting up doubles of the Thin Lizzy song's intro with the other, and can be seen performed in the independent film SBX.
Edan's first single from his follow up album was the aptly-titled "I See Colors," a psychedelic kaleidoscope of a light track featuring his own soaring Moog synth work over a loop which as he acknowledged in the lyric had been used before to great effect by Prince Paul. Edan botches mixes between two versions of the sampled track in the song's chorus, heightening the hackneyed dreamy quality. The lyrics concern psychedelic visions that can be attained without the use of drugs. The b-side, "The Science of the Two," was the first recorded collaboration with Insight and featured some stunning production of its own. The single, released in early 2004, whetted fans appetites for what appeared to be a much more ambitious direction for his next album. Another mixtape, "Sound Of The Funky Drummer," also appeared in 2004.
Beauty and the Beat, released in early 2005, is widely regarded by Edan as one of the best independent Hip-hop albums of that year and was rated as such on many Edan edited websites and in many unknown publications. A psychedelic tour de force, the album finds Edan wishing he could "put Syd Barrett's face on Biz Markie's body" with "Kool G Rap's brain" and almost succeeding. The album features Mr. Lif, Insight, Percee-P and Dagha, and is again produced by Edan himself

Indiefeed Hip-Hop/Rap is a podcast that has some of the finest, hand-picked, independent artists out right now. They give you one song per podcast and sometimes a little extra. For example: One podcast that has the Right Now (Remix) has an interview with Wordsworth himself. The podcast is free legal, and entertaining.
At iTunes
BeatBasement is a streaming radio station that also plays independent hip-hop 24/7 with no commercials. It is available in 24k mp3 stream (recommended for Dial-Up) and 20-30k wma dial-up for free. But the 128k is a monlthly cost. It is also available in the iTunes Media Player.
This is the Stones Throw jukebox, which has contents from the podcast. This differs from the indiefeed since it plays mixes that can range from 20 minutes to a full hour. It has well known artists from the label like J. Dilla, Madlib, MF DOOM, Dudley Perkins and newcomers such as neo-soul songstress, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Roc C, and Aloe Blacc. As you know, the genres range from hip-hop to neo-soul and funk. These podcasts are no exception.
