There was always so much of it; for as long as he could remember. From the day he could walk, Masaru had been brought into the dark underbelly of his home country to learn as much as he could. Children are like sponges after all, soaking up everything around them (the good and the bad). So becoming an assassin wasn't a personal choice but a lifestyle he was thrust into with his older brothers. Every day he would train with his siblings to better himself in whatever way he could; though, rarely did he stand a chance against his brothers. Masaru's brothers all seemed to get the [i]good[/i] genes. All were tall, handsome, and almost like walking powerhouses in comparison to Masaru. Marasu has always been lithe and small for his age; all things he's tried to come to terms with. Being small does have its advantages after all! No opening was too small for him to squeeze through and slipping in somewhere undetected was far easier for him. His height helped spur on competition with his brothers over the years but that ended in a bloodbath when Masaru was twenty years old. The bloodbath was caused by traitors he had once called "brothers". Masaru hates recalling the events of that night but during the standoff against his brothers, Masaru's right arm was cut to near ribbons, causing him to be unable to use his dominant arm for his sword. This forced him to resort to other means to destroy his foes as he had no intention of dying that night. Though he supposed this is the first night he had felt [i]true[/i] fear about dying. Until this point no opponent had ever come close to taking his life, but this just showed off his brothers' skills. Ones he swore he would top, come Hell or high water. Rushed to the nearest hospital, it was quite a fight for survival from there onward. He had lost a lot of blood and doctors had talked about amputating his arm as the damage was severe. What caused them to change their mind is still a mystery to Masaru but he is grateful they didn't cut it off. Sure his arm is no longer the same and he's learned to use his left hand as a dominant one for most things, Masaru still regularly exercises his right arm, trying to build up strength in it; though, little good it does. Chunks of muscle are missing after all but he's learned to cope and work around it. Countless rounds of physical therapy has taught him how to use his arm more effectively but as if that would stop him from doing as he pleased! Masaru still goes free-running every other night as well as exercises regularly. Nothing is going to keep him down. Not even the nightmares that keep him up at night. Coming that close to death and losing his arm has really taken a toll on him, even if he won't admit to it. Ever. There is also the tiny hope that it will fully restore the functions of his right arm. All good things but it will also prove to everyone else that he is the [i]best[/i], no longer trapped in his family's shadows but able to stand on his own.
