(( Jewels; no guidelines or anything. I mean, I guess I'd prefer it to be non-Chumu but that doesn't really bother me or anything. xp))

The sun overhead was scorching, and the open savannah provided no place nearby to escape the heat of the midday sun. Having made her way through the deadzone areas to this relatively untouched santuary, the pup was exhausted. Her fur clung to her body in sweaty clumps and her pads were battered and bloody from too much walking. Under her ratty pelt, her rubs and hip bones protruded at irregular intervals from lack of nourishment. Without water, the young one was quickly approaching heat exhaustion. In her present state, she was almost certain that no self-respecting clan would let her in, and what nomad had the resources to save such a far-gone pup?

((Yay! My first chance to RP Hakuro!))

No wind meant that it was harder to track by scent. For most predators, this would pose a problem, but not for the young male hyena pup. Most of his food was located by courtesy of the vultures, and he followed those primarily with his eyes. In fact, hot days like this were best for that purpose; the vultures could travel for miles on the numerous thermals rising up from the ground. However, finding food and finding relief from the relentless heat were two seperate problems, and while he might be able to wander after the black avians and find something to fill his rumbling stomach, the birds could not find shade for him. Panting, the pup trotted along aimlessly, hopelessly keeping a lookout for anything that could provide protection from the harsh sun.

Having faced countless hallucinations and heat-induced half-sights, the pup wasn't about to assume anything was real unless it came to her. She had run one too many times towards what she perceived as being shade to only find it to be an illusion for her to continue to waste her energy for it. Thinking the strange blurry form in the distance to be little more than another vision, Jewels staggered onwards. Staggered, and finally fell down completely in exhaustion. With a small whine, she curled in on herself.

Although scent did not carry far in this stillness, sound did. Two dusty, white-rimmed ears perked up, and the young male pup stopped abruptly. A small, weak sound such as that... could there be a potential meal nearby? Curiously, he went off at a brisk trot towards where the sound had come from. When he reached a point where the female's scent could reach him, the pup paused again. That scent... it was... somehow... familiar... Nose in the air, he continued forward until he came upon the still form of the exhausted female. Well, this was certainly where the scent was coming from, and most likely the whine, too... He took a deep inhale and realized that he could place the scent: it was a hyena, roughly his age, and a female one, too. ...But was she dead? Another sniff told him no; she was still alive, but very weak. Carefully, timidly, he put his muzzle to her ribs and felt her skin. It was painfully warm (though his own skin was most likely the same) and he could feel the rib bones underneath without pressing at all. Alarmed, he sat back, staring at the half-dead female hyena and wondering what would become of her. After all, he most likely shared the same fate... but then again, who knew what paths they both could take?

Jewels' blurred vision of the small male approaching her made her think more towards her hallucinations from earlier. Hallucinations of her clan and family, and hyenas she didn't know that offered safety and comfort that wasn't really there. Yet this one wasn't offering any kind words for her, and she surely didn't remember him. A small whine rose from weak vocal chords when he touched his nose to her - heat-visions didn't cause her to feel things.

Weakly, her tail thumped a bit in the dust and sand of the savannah. Hope. A small ray of hope. She lifted her head off the dirt, looking at the other as best she could with the little strength she could muster. She had never expected to run into another out here, especially one her own age it seemed. Maybe his parents were nearby, and they could help. Then the disturbing thought slipped in - that he could be a loner just like herself. If that was the case... Her tail stilled its motion. At least one of them could survive.

He watched in surprise as the strange female managed to feebly wag her tail and lift her head to him. Perhaps she wasn't as weak as she looked, though she was still in poor condition. Tentatively, he tried to push her to her feet with his muzzle, but his own weakness coupled with hers guaranteed him failure in this endeavor. Sitting back on his haunches, he pondered what to try next, his tongue lolling out of his mouth with the heat and his exertion. Suddenly an idea struck, and the male went straight to work, scratching at the dry earth with his blunt, red claws.
