When They check your blood while you're on Depakote, what are they checking for?

Liver enzyme levels... and depakote sucks. They put me on 1,000mg of it and i went into a semi coma and slept for like 36 hours straight. My mom couldn't even wake me up.

Oh I do great on depakote... been on for migraines... then bipolar...
However, after about 6 months I got the tremors.
Every medication has side effects for some not for others. Let you doctor know how you react to every medication. There are a lot of them for bipolar now.
I luckily went through all of them before we, psychiatrist and myself, found a combine that worked, lower dose of this so needed another. It took six months to get mine straight ---"I have never had a patient that I had to work with that long to get stable" So your should be easier.
But it will never work right if you don't tell your doc what is going on.
heart heart heart
I think I will put my medication woes on my profile. Great you posted.

Depakote works for me...when I take it regularly, of course. I seem to have a problem with that.
Side effects were a b***h at first, but I feel normal now.

Oh jeez, and then I realized I didn't even answer the question....
They check your depakote levels to make sure you're within therapeautic range, and they'll probably check something with your liver to make sure everything is ok.

Yep yep - the levels of the drug in your blood, and also your kidney and liver function to make sure your body isn't being harmed by excreting the drug from it. 3nodding There's probably other tests thrown in just for the hell of it, too. You can always ask what bloodwork is being done, you know. smile
I get copies of my bloodwork results because I vaguely understand most of them, but a doctor will explain all the numbers and enzymes and plasma levels and whatnot to you if you're interested. 3nodding

Yeah I took depakote in 6th grade for epilepsy and it slowed my metabolism 'til it stunted my growth and caused me to gain lots of weight. So I got switched to Lamictal (lamotrigine, good stuff) and not only did the side effects stop, it balanced my emotions too! 2 hits with 1 shot ish good 3nodding
Even four years later I can't get rid of teh stretch marks. Advice..?

Advice..? I'm hoping to convince my neurologist to switch me to Lamictal. Depakotes "fun" side-effects of making my hair fall out, causing me to develop cysts all over both ovaries, not to mention having to battle with my weight... it's just not worth it. I can handle the tremors. They aren't a big deal. It's the being a bald fat female who otherwise wouldn't have developed PCOS that bothers me. (Although I have read that Lamictal has been shown to reverse the Depakote induced PCOS.)

I'm missing memory because of Depakote as well as other drugs. Apparently they tested my blood every month or so when I was on the depakote to make sure that my liver wasn't imploding... enzymes and such.
