Hm... I don't believe so... sweatdrop If you remember, Toph did bend some of it. I think it's just a more specific type of earth bending. If it was going to be a new bending, they would've said.

I'd say that Sand Bending is a branch of earth bending.

I knew when the writers had them called Sand Benders folks would start asking this.
It's just a different t ype of Earth Bending just like the Swamp Rednecks were a different type of Water bender.
Different skill sets showed up in the bending because of where they live.

Tiayoh sand bending is earthbending just like plant bending is earthbending and lightning is fire bending and ice bending is water bending! Actually the Plant Bending in the swamp was Water Bending. He was Bending the WAter in the Flexible Plants.(Something that really wouldn't be much use outside the swamp)

sand is earth...just not solid earth. the earth benders who live their are just called that because that is what they have to bend.

no. *think about it, Toph has bent sand before* Sand is technically rock right? *just broken up and withered down to teeeeeny tinyyyy pieces... and since the sand benders lived in the desert with no actual rocks, or boulders, sand would kinda be like thier substitute.... henceforth: sand benders. yay!* blaugh

Yeah. It's like... some earthbenders probably lived in the desert, or settled there, and decided to stay, so they learned to bend sand. They basically specialize in it.

No its a special kind of earth bending kind of like how water benders can manipulate plants and fire benders can use lightning.

Sand is a lot of broken up rocks.
It's earthbending.
